  1. Good Evening All, I just want to start off by saying thanks to Raptorman for the compliments, I had a great time on Sunday listening to some fine tunes. I am currently using a pair of rf-35's with my Shanling STP-80 tube integrated. I upgraded the cheap tubes that came with it to a quad of new Mullards. I am very happy with my system. It has warmth and excellent imaging. As Raptorman stated on Sunday "the speakers disappear". I use to have my Heresy's hooked up to the tubes but they lacked the bass IMO. I traded the rf-35's from my wife's system and i have not looked back. The bass is deep and rich, not sloppy at all. I am very content with my set up and I can definitely say that the RF-35's sing with my tube amp (35 wpc). I hope you get your set up to where you are as happy. Delano
  2. Mr. Songer, You have a PM. Thank You all for your responses. I will let you know if I pick up any Blue Note's or other good vinyl. Delano
  3. Good Evening, I have the chance to purchase some early pressings/first pressings on the Blue Note label and was wondering what I should look for to authenticate. I have over 100 Blue Note reissues on vinyl and now I want to take the next step and go for the real deal. What should I look for? I know this is hard but what are the price ranges for these beauties? For example: Herbie Hancock - My Point of View early pressing, how much? I would really appreciate your input. Thanks Delano
  4. Good Evening and Welcome, I had been using my trusty Heresy's with my new tube amp and thought they sounded great but still lacked in the bass department. I had recently bought a second system for my wife which consisted of a brand new pair of RF-35's ( newer version of the RF-3's). One day I figured I would switch out the speakers and try the RF-35's on the tube amp. All I can say is WOW, the bass is extremely tight and they sounded amazing with the tubes. Now I must say that I am and have always been a big fan of the Heresy's but I had to be honest with myself and go with the better speaker for MY ears and I stuck with the RF-35's. Just my two cents Dealno
  5. Raptorman, You have a PM. Sorry for the delay. Delano
  6. I have been going through a ton of records in the last two weeks and have found some amazing stuff. Max G, I have been seeing many early Decca, London, Mercury and Columbia pressings. Even though all of the records I received were classical I made some interesting discoveries which would interest the jazz fans. On several records on the Vox label I noticed that the sound engineer is none other than Dr. Rudolph Van Gelder a.k.a. RVG of Blue Note fame. I have been thoroughly enjoying some fantastic performances on vinyl. I especially love hearing mono pressings with Maria Callas in her prime. It will take me quite a while to get through all these new records but i will keep posting updates to any interesting finds. Delano
  7. Hello all, I scored big time this weekend. I went to a friend of a friends house for a new years party last week and noticed a large amount of vinyl. It turns out that the owner of the house inherited this large collection ( 900 +) of records from his dad. I asked him what he was going to do with it and he wanted it to go to a good home. So I went over this weekend to look through them and pick out a few. As I started I could not believe what I found. Mint condition classical recordings from the 50's and sixties and mostly mono recordings. There were some of my favourite operas as well as symphonies, needless to say it was overwhelming. The owner approached me and asked me if I wanted the whole lot and to make him an offer. I only had $200.00 dollars on me and I told him that, he replied "sold". So here I am with over 900 classical recordings along with my 400+ jazz and rock collection. I guess I am definitely back into vinyl. I will definitely need a record cleaning machine and a turnatable upgrade. Mr. Max G I will definitely be posting some of my finds as the weeks go on and asking for your opinions. It will take me quite a while to go through all of these. Delano
  8. HEY CTP JUST MY TWO CENTS. I HAVE THE SHANLING AMP PAIRED WITH HERESY'S AND I AM DEFINITELY NOT LACKING IN THE BASS DEPARTMENT. WAIT UNTIL YOU GET THE AMP FIRTS AND TRY IT OUT WITH YOUR RF 3'S, YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED. i HAVE RF3'S IN MY SECOND SYSTEM AND I TRIED THEM OUT WITH THE SHANLING AND IT WAS PRETTY GOOD. i FIND THE BASS I GET WITH THE HERESY'S IS DEFINITELY NOT BOOMING BUT VERY TIGHT AND ACCURATE. I LISTEN TO MOSTLY JAZZ AND SOME ROCK. THE ACOUSTIC BASS SOUNDS VERY REALISTIC. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY SET UP, I WOULD'NT CHANGE IT ONE BIT. GOOD LUCK WITH THE AMP AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. DON'T LET ANYONE PUT IT DOWN BECAUSE IT WAS MADE IN CHINA, YOU WILL SEE WHEN IT ARRIVES THAT IT IS ONE NICE PIECE OF GEAR. DELANO PS. WHY IS THE POST IN ALL CAPS?
  9. Good Day, Well I am the proud owner of an stp-80 and I love it. ait has blown me away with it's very non-fatigueing warm sound. I am very surprised that you want this amp. A short time ago when I posted that I was having problems with mine you made it clear that "not to bash your choice, but Chinese amps will always break". Those ar your words. I am not trying to start an issue here but I was wondering what made you change your mind. I would reccomend the shanling without hesitation and I hope you do get it. Delano
  10. Good Evening, I was wondering if you guys could help me decide if it is worth changing the Ortofon om -5e cartridge on my Thorens Td145 to a Grado Black or Red. Will I hear a difference? Is it worth the money? The Ortofon is still in good shape with not too many hours. Thanks all Delano
  11. Hey, I bought a used Thorens td145 MKII and it is in mint shape and built very solid. It has some weight to it. I spoke to a audio guy at one of my favourite shops and he told me that this table came out about 20 years ago or so and with a half decent cartridge would compare to a 1-2 thousand dollar new table. It is just incredible. I am in love with my system all over again. Delano
  12. Sorry guys, I was just going to say that I hooked up my new Thorens turntable and vinyl is simply amazing. I am loving the soundstage and that magical warmth. Dealno
  13. I just hooked up my new Thorens turntable and wow! I did not realise how much I missed that vinyl sound. It so open and warm, I think I have a new hobby. Delano
  14. Hey, how are you Raptorman. Thanks, i am really excited about spinning the vinyl again. I am taking the amp in to Harley in the AM. I spoke to them on the phone and as I expected they are going to take care of me. Audio Empire is probably the most professional and honest store in Canada as far as I am concerned. In the meantime I have my old trusty Harmon Kardon receiver so I still have music. Have a good evening Delano
  15. Good evening all, Well, I finally broke down and bought a nice used turntable. It's a Thorens TD 145 mkII. It's in great shape and I will be getting out all the old vinyl and letting her rip. I Love the old Thorens tables. They are built like tanks. Delano
  16. Thanks you Gray for the nice response, it is appreciated. I will be taking it in to the shop and I will definitely ask what happened and why for next time. To those who bashed me for going Chinese I think you should think first considering many of the Klipsch products you enjoy so much including more than half of the Reference line are made in China. Not trying to start a war but just keep people in check. I do not like hypocrisy. Delano
  17. Thanks for all the responses guys, even the negative ones. I did purchase the amp at Audio Empire and I know that Harley definitely stands behind his stuff. I did lots of research before buying this amp and I know I did the right thing. I do realize that certain things could happen with tube ownership and I am just glad that I have my old trusty harman Kardon receiver while the tube amp gets servicing. It actually sounds pretty good with the tube output cd player. delano
  18. Thanks for your quick response Dean. I know from all your posts that you know what you are talking about. Is this normal with tube amps because this is what I was afraid of when i first bought the amp. I am a music lover not an equipment kind of guy. I want to sit and enjoy the music without worrying about the amp/tubes. I when i had ss gear i did not worry too much but with the tubes I am constantly worrying. I this something I have to look forward to as an ongoing issue or a once and a while thing. I love the tube sound . Thanks again Delano
  19. Hey Guys, I was sitting here minding my own business listening to some Jackie McLean and I heard a loud pop. Then it was fine then all of a sudden very loud feedback/scratchy noise. I jumped and turned everything off. I unhooked the amp and hooked it up my heresy's to an old receiver. Everything is working fine again so I have isolated the problem to my amp. It's a 6 month old Shanling integrated tube amp. Do you guys know what might of happened and do you think it could have damaged my speakers? Thanks in advance Delano
  20. Good Day, That cd is the exact same music that was in the movie. I own both the cd and the Criterion edition of the movie. Delano
  21. I think I know this movie. It is called "the passion of joan of arc" and is available on dvd as a Criterion. One of the most beautiful movies ever made. The music is available on cd by a group called "the annonymous 4" And the piece of music is called "voices of light" it was written by Richard Einhorn specifically for this Criterion release. It is available on Sony Classical Records. i love this music, so beautiful and haunting. Good Luck Delano
  22. Good evening all, I have been reading this thread since it started and I feel we are all missing the point. Let me just say that I am just stating my opinion and I don't want to start any problems here. I feel that my main passion is the music not the gear. I know, I know this is a gear forum but I feel that we all get a little to lost in the electronic side. Trust me I also love vinyl and all its inherent warmth but I can listen to much more music and conveniently at that on cd. The reason i siwtched to tubes is to get a warmer sound but to be honest i could listen to J.C.'s A Love Supreme on a clock radio and I would still be enthralled. Hey, if you can afford it go for the best. I went for the best that I could afford and the music is is still wonderful. Whether it be vinyl, cd, tape etc. lets be passionate about the music because I would like to think that on this forum, especially, there are no "serious" audiophiles". This is not meant as a slight to anyone. I discovered the "audiophile" while shopping for my recent system. Some of these guys could care less about the music as they only listen to "audiophile pressings" or "24kt gold" cd's. One serious high end store i checked out left me wondering about what these people wanted from a system. One salesman out on an "audiophile" lp which I did not care for(the music that is). I told him that I did not like the sound of this particular artist. The man looked at me with such disdain as he told me to forget about the music and listen to the "separation and clarity". That does not help me when I get home and put on my cd of the music "I" love. I guess my point is that we have trust ourselves ( and our Klipsch speakers) to decide on what is most important. To not listen to a certain kind of medium because " serious " people do not is missing the point. Until recently I listened to most of my music on a boombox and I still loved it. Be passionate about the music and the rest will follow. Sorry to ramble on. Good night Delano
