  1. Hi Also have a look at the Roger Floth artilce http://home.earthlink.net/~ivol/klipsch_cornwall/cornwall_mod.htm i have recently built a box using this design and it works a treat!
  2. Thanks No.4. Yep...an attempt at using Tasmanian Oak, Tractrix built for the Altec 1.4" that I use. Could have done better but it works
  3. So I have done a little more fiddling and work on the project...still liking the sound very much, Bob's crossovers are simple and work very well integrating the bottom end with the horns, The tweeter has lots of detail that the K77 could not muster
  4. thanks Soundbound...more work to be done! And yes I have a wife Klipfish of 40 years, very understanding, also have a room where I can fiddle. I have been living with some sort of Klipsch product since 1977, just can't seem to get them out of my blood, nor would I want too!
  5. now I need to finish it off and build a system that will allow me to slide & rotate mid and tweet to sweet spot and room conditions...spoke to an engineer who has some ideas
  6. Here is the upload of 1st phase with LeCleac'h
  7. Hello...long time away! A couple of years ago I purchased Martin Login Montis, very nice speakers, hearing things my Khorns could not produce but they did not have the 'peaks with goosebumps' that the Khorns could produce. At the same time I was reading a lot about what people were doing with Cornwalls/Cornscalas. It interested me, I had some bits and bobs that I used to tweak my Khorns and thought I could build something, not sure what. I contacted Bob Crites, purchased a few things off him over the years. Bob set me straight about how I could create something simply better, all I needed was a pair of his woofers, his new Italian tweeters DE 120 (much better than the previous Eminence unit) and his simple crossover network (500/4,500). I had some tractrix horns I had built, a couple of Le Cleac'h horns (AH-425 from Azurahorn), a pair of Altec 291 16K and a pair of Atlas PD-5VH mids I built a 2'x2'x2' according to his plans ( a few mm out here and there). I glued/sealed everything I could except the front motor boards. I left the mid and tweet on top of the box as separates. Was a great sound, impressed me a lot but I needed more depth and tightness so I went and made up the motor board ports according to Roger Froth's article (Equalising the Klipsch Cornwall). Wow, what a difference (in my room at least). Very tight and detailed bottom end and I reckon it would have added a few more hz to the bottom end response. One thing for sure the speakers do pick up subsonics so careful with the volume! Anyhow I fiddled about a bit positioning tweet and mid with box over a period of weeks trying for the best position in the room and best combination of drivers/horns using only Bob's crossover. Well what I found was that my 1.4" to 2" tractirx horn with the Altec 291, the DE 120, Bob's crossover and woofers was a match made by the gods! I couldn't believe what I was hearing, clean, clear, dynamic, great side to side and even front to back imaging. I can categorically say not as loud as the Khorns but simply better!! I am trying to load a picture I what I ended up with but the system is refusing the upload!!! I'll try another thread!
  8. The Montis is surprisingly easy to set-up and does have more dynamics than a std panel speaker (that most people would have come across in the past) and most box speakers. When you throw them up agaisnt horns you do notice compression factors but a good clean, fast and powerful amp will help overcome to some extent. I am using the Bryston 4bSST2.That's why I am surprised that the difference is not as big as I thought it would be. Like any speaker, a good room room placement with specific treatments will enhance the experience.
  9. Well I had a chance to compare my Khorns to Martin Logan's Montis. They retail about the same in the US and just maybe the Khorn is a little cheaper. Here in Aus the Khorn is more expensive. The look: firstly and foremost craftsmanship v's machine shop. People build the Khorn and machines build the Montis (with some human intervention). Both in their own way are impressive, the Khorn commands respect and the Montis admiration The sound: not as 'chalk and cheese' as I thought! The Khorn will always have the 'jump factor', the sheer exhilaration and stridency that very few speakers have, also the low, low distortion that you only recognise when you listen to other speakers. If you want the musicians in the room with gusto, the Khorn has this in spades. The Montis however is more laid back but has detail, front, centre, sides and rear that the Khorn does not have. They can get cranking when you throw hard rock at them but they don't jump at you like the Khorn. The bass on the Montis is not bad at all for a small box of technology but the Khorn just has the reality of the drummer in the room. Verdict: Horses for courses, I do like the Montis especially on jazz, artists are more articulate at normal listening levels but the Khorn will always remain awesome. cheers
  10. I use Cyrus gear, highly acclaimed and now good buying value off ebay et al
  11. Hi and welcome. I have a pair of 2004 with AK4 and did bi-amp. I would say the difference was not that noticeable once I achieved 'balance' with the two amps and pre-amps. There was a little more richness to the sound but no 'wow' factor. I think it entirely depends on the amps/pre's you will use over one single source. I think changing the network coupled with bi-amping may have a better outcome. all the best
  12. Let's get the band to come and play at home! But then again I am sure some of us would love to tweak the sound while others would shout 'sit down up front'! Tastes change...the best red wine (voted) in the world is now made in China!
  13. So if we were to 'formularise' what would it be...expert engineer + right material + right instruments + plus xy sampling = most pleasurable and true to the original?
  14. If you have not downloaded from this site http://archive.org/search.php?query=%28format%3A%2824Bit%20FLAC%29%20OR%20%28flac24%29%20OR%20%2824-bit%29%20OR%2024bit%29%20AND%20collection%3Aetree have a go it's FREE!! There are some shockers in here but every now and again a gem appears and you can get 96/24 Cheers
  15. Hi...the sound with the K77 will also improve when you position them in the vertical as they were originally intended by EV. They begin to drop away at about 15k where as Crites goes to 20k (most of us can't hear that far up) and certainly the tone and timbre of the K77 is in your face as opposed to the smoothness of Crites, the Eminence driver is not a bad one.
  16. Michael that is so true...the 'fiddle ability' increases!
  17. Even a 44.1 sample through my laptop sounds as good as being played through my expensive CD set-up. With electronic files you lose the artefacts that all CD players carry no matter what the cost and yes files are much easier to play, sort, categorise, rip with greater flex. Just like vinyl took a dive (I still like listening to vinyl) the CD is at the edge of the cliff!
  18. Oh and yes some larger algorithms in play. So a 44.1 sample becomes 88.2 or 96 times per second and up to 192 which should mean (if taken from an original recording) that the digital signal becomes more like the original as the sample size increases. Just a way of expressing closeness/accuracy to the original analog signal be it a tape or digital device. Often a recording is done at 96/24 and mixed down to CD format of 16 bit. Sometimes not a good thing as the engineer of the recording may not be any good thus recording no good! The bits is the signal-to-noise/dynamic range max - 16 bit is about 96db and 24 bit 144db which provides for greater extension of the signal which I believe a really good horn can provide that speed in dynamic range like no other speaker...Khorn comes to mind! I am no expert but I let my ears judge.
  19. For the me the difference is clarity, better positioning of instruments/voices, hearing more of them and the tone/timbre/decay and the dynamic range which is the most surprising. I have normal CD tracks played on some very expensive kit but when I play the same track off a file from my laptop (recorded in 96/24 from original tape) the difference means that I just don't play the CD anymore! I have downloaded some live recordings, some very average and others fantastic, feels as though you are in the room with the crowd! Just can't get that from a CD. I am told that purchasing a dedicated media player (beefed up computer) takes it to another level but really how good can it get? I am impressed already.
  20. Hi all Is anybody downloading & listening to HD audio files? If so what are you using for hardware and software and where are you downloading from? I have just started playing around with it and just like the introduction of the CD has pricked my ears up! I l also must say what a game for Horns to be at their best, with further increases in detail and dynamic range, it again places horns in a place that many speakers could not compete! Thoughts?
  21. Looks like I will have to make myself...our customs people are hard nosed on any liquids that come into the country (so I have been told) that do not have some sort of certification or approval. Maybe need to disguise as 7 Up!
  22. I bought the NAD M51 superb! Runs extremely well with my J2 amp and Khorns. The pre-amp on the M51 is a dream and I download HD files in Flac without issue. You can use multiple connections with the M51
