  1. Hi Brad. I have been up since 3:00 AM, eastern and I only got to bed at 11:00 8.gif

ok, here's the gist of my last couple days.

After slapping a new radiator into my wifes car, I left Knoxville Wednesday for Indianapolis. Got to Indy and visited with an old friend I've not seen/heard from for about 10 years.

Found out he's had FOUR heart attacks and is now also considered a "serious" diabetic, having to take insulin shots four times per day. 8.gif I had to keep in my mind during the rest of the trip that even though I was acquiring one of my dreams, they still need to be kept into perspective.

Got up thursday morning, drove to Brads house in Chicago and being the early bird type I am, arrived a couple hours early. I just sat & waited in car, sneaking a little nap and also wondered when his neighbors would call the cops, reporting "some strange person/car on street for hours on end, spying on the neighborhood with a trailer attached to steal something..."

Interestingly enough, every now & then when a car passed by, I "knew" it would be the police. Well... the police DID finally show up which actually made me chuckle. Although they DID show up, they were evidently just cruising by and not looking for/at me, for they simply continued on their way, evidently, never giving me a second look.

Met Brad & his lovely wife. Very nice people for anyone who hasn't already figured that out. None the less... got to sit/listen to his tube amp which is something I DID want to do, even though I had a 700 mile return trip ahead of me.

Now that I heard it, I have a better idea of what to listen for or more accurately, a better idea of what to NOT listen for 2.gif

We finally loaded up his cherished babies into the trailer. Yes, it of course was raining and dark as a cave in the trailer. So with flashlights around, we made it work.

Left his house, drove back to Indy & stayed at hotel. Friday morning, met up with my friend again for breakfast. Went to his house afterward and visited with his wife and as luck (or bad luck ? 9.gif ) had it, his wifes lifelong best friend, and a girl I dated a bit was coming into town to see the wife "in a couple hours". So, I had the wonderful pleasure of hanging around longer than anticipated and then going out to lunch with my friend, his wife and... well... simlply one of the most beautiful women I've ever had honor of spending time with. (also is 5'10 and wears heels 3.gif3.gif3.gif10.gif11.gif )

Left Indy like 6 hours later than I had anticpated & drove onto Cincy to visit yet another friend. Left Cincy on friday about 5-ish and worked my way home, finally arriving about 10:00 pm.

Sooooooooooo, round trip, I put about 1,500 miles onto car.

As I sit here & type (at 4:00 am) the stuff is STILL in trailer awaiting it's trip inside. the wife thinks I'm putting all of it in our currently unfinshed basement. I'm waiting until she's gone to work and I'm putting them into the living room 9.gif

Oh yes, when she gets home later today, there WILL be hell for me to pay for this. I can hardly wait to pay and then fire them up.

  2. You might also consider looking into Contax (Made by Yashica). Contax primary lens are made by Zeiss (as are Hasselblad for example) and are also excellent lens. You can "cheat" and look into a Yashica body and put the Contax (Zeiss) lens on them instead of the Yashica lens.

Yes, I'm a Contax fan. I have their RTS II and recently sold my 85mm 1.2 50th anniversary lens. now THAT was a honker piece of glass 6.gif10.gif

  3. Figured I'd bump this so you could see the speaker in reference to my question.

I'm planning on driving to Chicago this upcoming week to pick these up. (wiping off more drool)

Anyway, the corners I'll put them in until the basement is finished, is going to have them sitting smack dab on top of my floor registers. Sooooooooo, I'm thinking on building a small base.

Essentially, as per the footprint of these, cut some plywood and then take some 2x4's (laying flat for better support), attach triangular plywood so that when this 2 1/2 base is in corner, the 2x4's are around the vent and it will not be suffocated.

ok, now to the WAF items, I will probably put a walnut "skirt" around this base so it will blend in with the speakers.

Do I need to "stain" the skirt or will BLO only work? otheer??

I know it probably wont' matter a GREAT deal since it's only going to be maybe a 3" strip, but still, we all know how the wives can be 3.gif

So, butting up flush with the bottom of this speaker, how would I best be served to finish the wood skirt?

  4. Ok, I think we're all old enough to perhaps agree that one mans Ferrari, is another mans Corvette and that both men are "right" in their decision.

I just found Jolida's website and in fact, found it pretty informative to my uninformed brain.

What are some other names of manufacturers? (I've also seen Mcintosh's site)

I presume like anything else in life, some of these tube manufacturers are like autos. Though they might all be good enough, though they all might drive you from point a to point b, there are SOME brands, that seem to be just a cut above the rest.

I'm not trying to start any wars, I'm trying to find out brand names, which ones might be no brainers to purchase and which ones might be worth staying away from.

Can we all agree that although a Yugo might (and I DID say MIGHT) get you from point A to point B, that a pogo stick might be more reliable? 11.gif10.gif

So, brand names, model numbers (if you know it) Preferably ones with websites?

Since I like solid punch in bass, evidently a push pull type would fit me better?

Is it better to look at seperates, is it just as easy to look at an integrated tube amp?

I fear I'm pushing the questions close to war starting zones. I really hope anyone who responds, does so to help and not to trash anything else. I'm trying to learn

  5. Rtaylor, I see by profile you are in cincy. I was born and raised in Hamilton . Gotta love Graeters

As you mention it, long long ago, I was at a place that sells Mcintosh locally... I think their name is Statement Audio??

I'll have to check them out in couple weeks, after I get my new K-horns , and ya baby... I can hardly wait.

Still wish there was more of a localized education on tube stuff 8.gif I'm the anal type that likes to try to get educated as much as I can before heading out into public. Indeed, in the past as I've bought stuff, I've found I usually knew more than the salesperson. Sadly, regarding tubes, that ain't gonna happen.

  6. Ok.. I've been trying to read archives about tubes and I keep running into "horns love tubes" or the equivilant of.

Ok, when ever I've seen that, generally it's regarding K-horns. Does that general statement apply to Lascalas too?

    (got a pair of Las)

I'm in process of obtaining my first pair of K-horns in 2 weeks and will initially be hooking them up to my old Yammie Cr2040 (120/ch).

I'm intrigued about tubes but bluntly, am ignorant of them.

    So, couple general questions:

    1. Are tubes considered EQUIVALANTLY better for LaScalas too?

    2. If I do a HT setup, would I need 3 tube amps? (2x2 and 1x1?) for a 5.1 setup?

    3. What is better, push pull, triode, what are differences, why, how, when, where? 9.gif If I have a CD, DVD, VCR, tuner, sat/tv, how do I incorporate all those into tube amps?

    4. Can I use my yamaha pre-outs and drive that into tube power amps?

    5. Where does one go to look at/purchase tube stuff? (not aware of anything here in knoxville, but again, I've admitted my ignorance)

    6. I tend to listen to 70's rock, instrumental (piano). When I turn it up, I love for it to thump. Will a tube have more/less/same thump as my yamaha?

I sit here and try to think of semi-intelligent questions about tubes, but realize how little I know.

Is there a "Tubes for Dummies" kinda thing I can read?

    tia

  7. Thanks all. I've sent a check for $500 as initial deposit :)

Checked out the U-haul 4'x8' trailer and it seems it ought to work just fine. I'll get lots of padding. They're going to check out my car later today (Saturday) to make sure my electrical connection is there and working fine.

Hard to beat $10/day for trailer, a trip to some old favorite haunts in Cincinnati on my way to Chicago (Cincy = old home turf), and a pair of K-horns.

    10.gif

I'm sure Brad is being diplomatic, but I'd bet a nickel he can tell just how excited/giddy I am about getting these.

OH... and the wife... She happens to think these are going to go into our (currently) unfinished basement. 11.gif Just so happens, that I'll endeavour to show up at home when she's at work and out of my utter forgetfulness 11.gif9.gif , place them in the living room. Seems to me, you can't have a new pair of K-horns in your living room without bringing MORE of the stuff to work them with up from banishment of the basement? 11.gif11.gif

Oh yeah... my tribulations have just begun...good thing she keeps telling me I'm a keeper

    9.gif2.gif

  8. I dont know the milage from Knoxville to Chicagoland, but U-haul wants either .59 or .79 per mile PLUSE their day rate for truck (presuming round trip). Heck, for that, I could FLY there and make it a 1-way drive back.

I've just looked into their trailors too... but I still have an issue of tow vehicle.

If these went into a U-haul trailor, would it be fair for me to think they'd fit inside a 4x8 trailor? dimensions per their website are 8'x4'1"x4' (LxWxH)

So, are these less than 4' high? hmm.. I guess the top can come off and they can be put on their faces? (on cushions of course)

The trailor quoted price is only good for 24 hours of usage, I'd need it for probably another day to day + 1/2 so that 24 hour limit might come into play (again, I could perhaps rent up there 1-way)

    hmm... details & challanges

Let me put it this way, I'm interested. I just need to figure out the logistics and what makes the most sense, after all, after I bring them home, I'll be living outside with the skunks while my dogs sleep in my bed (after the wife figures out what I've done) 9.gif

  9. Well, if some goob (me) was to DRIVE up to Chicago area from Knoxville, what type vehicle would said goob need to be in?

I could investigate renting a truck? (dont like the open back), my Miata sure as heck aint gonna work... I doubt I'd even be able to fit both squawker sections in it lol.

hmm... I'll go call U-haul & see what they say, I'd suppose they'd have a van type vehicle.

OR... you could do a career change, move to Knoxville, bring them with you and then I'd be local?

    11.gif10.gif9.gif3.gif

hmm just had a technical glitch and this didn't post, I see you beat me to one. I've got phone book in hand right now as I type to call U-haul

  10. Ditto what Eric said. In late 70's, early 80's I took my receiver into my high end shop for some reason or another. The dude there had the cover off (it had been unplugged for at least a day). While he was tinkering inside the opened case with his metal screwdriver, he shorted the screwdriver out against something. Major spark, major "pop" and a major melted divot in his screwdriver where the arc melted it a bit.

I was shocked to see the amount of fireworks that was contained in this unplugged "dead" unit.

  11. And listen to "Tribute to George (Harrison)" and specifically, "While my Guitar gently weeps" and tell me if this sounds as awesome as I THINK it would sound...

I've been hankering on getting a pair & missed high bidder on EBAY by $25 other day. I figured if I'm lucky & get some, I'll set it up (2 channel) and put something like above on for when wife comes home (to skin me alive for getting them). Hoping that it would sound as good as it does on my Promedias.

Wait... what did I just say? "sounds as good as it does on my promedias"??? sigh, SEE? I need slapped 15.gif15.gif15.gif15.gif.

My fear is it will sound incredible (especially Clapton on guitar) and this is your opportunity to really rub it into my face.

  12. **I was most surprised at the La Scala bass response, especially around 40hz. And from 70hz up it clearly blows the Cornwall II out of the water. I can't understand why people trash it's low end**

I trash the low end (and I've owned a pair of Lascalas since roughly 1980, so I'm not trashing them in a 'negative' kinda way 9.gif )

None the less, my "other" set of speakers are some 1978 Electro Voice Interface D speakers that (as told me by a tech guy at EV) "their -3 db point is 28hz @ 106 db"

Although I'm not technicaly bright enough to simply comprehend what that meant without him trying to educate me... what I know in the REAL world is, my EV's will simply shake the WALLS (literally) when it comes time for a freight train to pass by, whereas, my Lascalas will "only" punch you in the chest.

My experience has led me to conclude that Klipsch in general, is fantastic for an overall sound (I'm planning on getting some K-horns, so I'm not bashing klipsch at all), but they don't do DEEP bass very well at all. Because of that, I'm very shied away from considering looking at a Klipsch sub. After all, when I've (in the past) read the spec sheets on a Klipsch sub, it seems that my 1978 EV's either equal it, or simply blow it out of the water, which is why I (though with love) trash Klipsch low end 10.gif

Now... bet you're sorry you asked lol

  13. I didn't think it was funny at all. In fact, I think it was just some a*****es jerking the sales guy around, and frankly, I'd been happier to have seen them wreck and the driver & partners terribly hurt and the taped document allowing the dealers insurance to avoid covering them.

This world is full of enough idiots and this video just documented my point. Further, the poor salesguy, although he evidently messed up by allowing the guy to drive without proper id and such, once he was a passenger, it was at an increased disadvantage.

Simply idiots out to screw with someone and frankly, I'd been more tickled to see their knees broken.

I live out in countryside and have to deal with morons like this every now and then that come out our way to do drugs, drink, tear things up, trespass, steal, counterfit, dump their trash , geez, I could go on... so I have lowered tolerance for klunkheads like this

    rant over

    please continue your fine day

  14. Week or so ago, I saw a nice looking pair of K-horns on EBAY. I bid on them and missed the bid by like $25. I was fine with that on one hand, and on the other hand, I was soooooooo close.

Anyway, then it dawned on me I ought to ask. Does this place have a classified section? (I've not found it so far if it exists)

Do people here sell there stuff often? (I know...NEVER lol)

My dream pair would be Rosewood but would clearly "settle" for Oak, Walnut (other??) finish.

I've been wondering and no one has answered me, so I figured it was about time I asked 10.gif Of course, the wife CLEARY rolled her eyes at me in a "denial of permission" kinda way. Then, just the other night, she bought a $2,300 PRINT (though signed) by Salvadore Dali. 8.gif5.gif6.gif15.gif

Then it dawned on me.. "honey, if you can buy a $2,000 piece of paper with a name on it, I certainly ought to be 'allowed' to buy some classic K-horns"

I'm digressing, sorry. Back to topic at hand... If/when I start to really sniff out a pair, do they ever show up here or am I just as well off chancing Ebay?

    Thanks

  15. I'm not knowledgable of the game you have, but as far as football in general... if you can pick teams you represent, just make sure you dont pick Cincinnati Bengals. That might prevent some additional grass flossing

(I'm (sad to admit) a lifelong fan of theirs, so I feel I'm within my rights to say that)

    9.gif

  16. I think I just had an epiphany tonight.

I've got a pair of Lascalas, circa 1980 give/take. they have the AA network.

Now, for you purests out there, please don't pile up on me, the following admissions are for informational purposes only, not ammunition 3.gif9.gif

I had my Lascalas mated to a Yamaha CR 2040 (120/ch) and in the tape loop, I had a dbx subharmonic synthesizer, 3bx and audio control equalizer.

(that is the ammunition part) 10.gif

It hit me today driving home that I not only always had the dbx synthesizer in the loop to add the "floor" that my beloved Lascalas never had, but in addition, I boosted the high end on the equalizer as I liked it a bit brighter than it seemed to be (room shortcomings?? I don't know, but that's not where i'm going with this)

so on way home, realizing I always pushed the high end a bit over "stock" signal, I *think* I recalled reading that the AA network is like -3db verses another network.

so, the upshot of this is, if my listening ear always wanted a bit higher output on the high end, would my x-over be a candidate for replacement and if so, for which one... ?

A hand in hand question would also be, would a tweeter swap (T-35, or was it the 350, 35-A...sigh, there we go again) be in order (along with x-over or not?) to brighten up the highs as I seemed to do with the eq.

    ??

Yikes... is this the first sign of upgradeitus?? 8.gif

  17. With all your disclaimers, one might think you two don't (think) you know a thing about classical music, relative to "affacaniados".

Well... I'm here to make you two look like the Einstein's you are, relative to ME.

    3.gif

Years ago, circa 1978??? I was at local high end sound store. the guy put on a record that was "classical" music, primarily organ as I recall. In that one two minute audition, I fell in love with Klipsch, AND ever since then, I've wondered about finding some music by Noel Rawlsthorn.

Soooooooooo, if this above question doesn't raise anyones ire with me and MY ignorance 9.gif Anyone ever heard of him and know if "stuff" by him is available on (horrors) cd?

(you may let the flogging of me begin... )
