  1. Allan,

Happy Birthday, glad I have another bourbon drinking buddy (but you should switch to Bookers). Now that you are the ripe old age of 48 I was wondering if you could tell us all what you would consider the essential ten (or 25 if you cannot narrow it down to 10) jazz lp's anyone starting a jazz collection should own. Would also love to hear what other forum members would list as their essential 10/25.

    Randy,

If you really, REALLY want them, let me know, I will pick them up for you and store them in my house in Austin. (I promise I won't play with them). It will be a pain, and I will have to deal with my wife for a few months, but for a fellow forum member, I will help you out if you really want them.

  3. Tom,

it does have all of the info entered in. You pop a cd in your computer, the program id's it, finds it on one of 6 databases on the web, downloads the info on your computer, even puts a picture of the cd/lp cover next two it. For lp, you just enter the name of the artist/lp the program finds the rest (tracks, other info.) on the web and enters it for you.

You could do a 100 cd's in an hour watching tv, you just need to keep changing them.

I've been using a bar-code reader for several years to do this. I've went through various custom built programs that I made, but recently switched to the Mac app "Delicious Library". It currently hooks up to Amazon to find details on dvds, music, books. Cool little app, I scan a new dvd/cd with my wireless bluetooth bar code reader, it auto looks up the selection on amazon, downloads the cover art and all details and displays them in your library. If you have an Apple its def. worth looking into.

Back to the question. Currently 1070 cds, 415 DVDs, around 100-150 lps (I dont track the LPs yet in my computer, just not enough of them) and a whole 1 SACD.

    ----------------

I highly reccomend Music Collector software. You can download at Collectorz.com. It will load all of the info from a CD when you put it into your computer, uses 4 different data bases to find your CD/LP has bar code reading capability, etc. I finally got everything entered because I was tired of buying lp's I already had at record shows. And it will give you an perfect count of everything in case anyone ever asks you how many cd's you have.

    LP's: 2,947

    CD's: 1,256

    SACD: 5

    DVD-A 3

    Pre-Recorded Reel to Reel: 87

  5. Trey,

Some very nice thoughts. It reminded me to send my Dad more notes and to thank him for taking the time to share with me many of the same things your Dad shared with you. My Dad turned 74 on the 10th. It is too easy to let time pass you by and I have heard too many people say they wish they would have told a parent something, or something more often before they passed. Your sentiments gave me the motivation to make sure that my Dad has no question in his mind what I am thankful he did for me, and to not take any opportunity to get together for granted.

    Thanks for saying hi,

  6. A great idea in theory. I am more then happy to let any of you come to my home and demo., or for that matter anyone interested in buying a similar set of speakers from any forum member. I like the thought of being able to pass on the enjoyment I have received to someone looking to get into heritage. A few email exchanges or a brief phone conversation is going to tell you if they are for real or not. If you want, you can show them one of your guns from your gun collection and say you wish they had made speakers in the same color as "this." They won't be back for any trouble.

The "legal issue" is a red herring. Homeowners insurance will cover you, there is no deductable for litigation expense, and you should make sure you have plenty of medpay anyway which pays regardless of fault. There is no more or less risk then having friends over for dinner.

I do join in the opinions about not wanting to do it for Klipsch and trying to keep heritage alive. It's there problem, not mine. I am happy to be altruistic for a forum member or anyone looking to buy from a forum member. For example, I think the idea would be great for Dean or Al's aftermarket crossovers. When I get around to getting mine I would be happy to offer them the option of sending any potential customer my way to listen. However, I value my time to much to do it for a company that is in the business of making speakers for a profit. There is nothing altrustic about such an endeavor. The auto analogy is a poor one. Ford is going to discontinue the T-Bird (again) this year due to a lack of sales. I don't feel a need to go buy one and offer everyone a free demo ride to try and save Ford either. Besides, if Klipsch needs me to help sell their heritage line then the line is already dead.

One other thing that has been overlooked is that the forum is actually their "home demo." These forums are not here out of the kindness of Klipsh Co.'s heart. It is a display of and acess to the best kind of advertising, word of mouth. They know if someone gets on here they are going to hear how great their speakers are. It is worth the expense to them to host these forums because it's members have a wealth of knowledge and obviously believe in the product. How much do you think Klipsch saves in payroll expense for customer services reps and tech. support reps. by referring folks to their various forums. How many times have you seen a brand new person get on a forum and say "I have a question about _______ and the person at the Klipsch 800 number said I should give you a try."

I say if someone is looking to get a used pair of Klipsch Heritage we do everything we can to make them a believer too. Try to give them a demo on the speakers they are interested in, answer all their questions, let them know when the next Klipsch Forum get together is and that there is always several set of speakers to listen to, etc. If they insist that they want brand new speakers, then I say we refer them to Klipsch and that little guy in Spring, Texas.

    IMHO

  7. I have a Z series, and there is no real difference. The one for sale now has the best cosmetics I have seen in a long time, I don't think you will find one better then that. The real key is wheather it has been worked on (caps replaced, etc., and by who). If it is all original you are going to need figure in the cost of replacing those old oil filled caps.

This was a great deal at $765 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=67807&item=5754915322&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

You can find MX-110's on Audiogon from time to time in near mint condition from 700 to 800, add about a $100 to $150 if it comes with the wood.

Super fine choice and you won't be disapointed.

  8. The right channel on my Mac 2125 went out on my yesterday. I am looking for replacement AMP while I search for a pair of mint MAC tube amps.

I am willing to look at just about anything, SS, PP, SET, in any price range that someone might have available right away. But would prefer SET that someone might be in the process of getting rid of since I would be able to hand onto that for another system I was going to create.

I look forward to hearing from anyone that has something ready to go in good shape.

    Thanks

  9. That is a very good point Dodger. You will need all of that info. for a theft or fire loss. I glad you mentioned it, I always say I am going to do it, but never seem to. I have a list for my guns, but now you have given me the perfect new years resolution to accomplish while I am watching the Rose Bowl. I am going to photograph and list every item.

  10. I just bought my wife a SONY 400 DVD/CD changer from BB and I went ahead and got the extended 4 year warranty for $50.00 bucks. They had mailed me a 10% off preferred customer coupon which pretty much covers the cost of the warranty. After she opens it I will tape the receipt and service contract on the bottom of the unit. I have found that after two or three years if something goes out I can't remember if I bought the warranty or not, and if I have, that I cannot locate the receipt/contract. I have had really good luck with Sony in the past and will not need to use it, but if I do I will be able to just bring the unit it with the documents attached.

My wife bought an extra Aiwa DVD progressive DVD player from Sams Club for a guest room a couple of years ago. I think it was between about $200.00. It just quit the other day, won't read any type of disk. It is out of warranty, even the extended warranty my credit card offers (don't forget about that by the way, can come in handy). If anyone lives close to Austin you are welcome to it to try and see if you can make it work, target practice or anything else you see fit. The cost to diagnose/fix the problem probably exceeds the value of the unit.

  11. Wow, some really neat stuff listed on here. Some of which bring back some fond memories. I wish I could look up the salesman at our local high-end stereo store to say how sorry I was for hanging out there for hours and hours without spending a dime.

I lucked out a great deal. My father worked for Ampex so, needless to say, I had the state of the art reel to reel coupled with commercial studio grade tube amps and preamps. I also got all of my fathers Mac stuff as hand-me-downs every time he upgraded. He switched from Klipsch to the AR-1 when it was all the rage. He told me that was the reason he went to Dyna amps, that was the only Amp at the time that would drive an AR-1. Thank goodness he went back to Klipsch and he liked to upgrade almost every year. I still have a lot of the Ampex equipment, all tube, all analog. Some stil workds great, some I am still searching for parts. The Mac stuff is all stll perfect.

I would first strip the finish and then assess whether you have a serious fill situation or not. You might be able to sand it to lessen the “notice-ability” of the scratch. Then any good polyurethane or lacquer will work. Or you could re-veneer them in whatever wood finish you like. I am by no means an expert on this topic but it’s my 2cents anyhow.

What stripper (o.k. spare me the jokes, I am serious) would you reccomend to remove the original lacquer? Any particular brand/product that you have had good sucess with. I always cringe when I have a project that I know will require stripping off the original finish.

  13. From the SME site:

In 1959 Alastair Robertson-Aikman, the Company's founder and Managing Director, required a pick-up arm for his own use and an experimental model was built. It received such an enthusiastic reception from friends in the sound industry that it was decided to produce it commercially and the first SME precision pick-up arm appeared in September 1959. Production was 25 units per week composed entirely of individually machined components. At this time a new factory situated in Mill Road, Steyning was opened and the Company's name was changed to SME Limited, a less committal title to suit its new activities.

SME now has over 40 years experience in high quality precision engineering and the Company's plant at Steyning is now probably the largest and best equipped devoted to the manufacture of precision pick-up arms and turntables.

  14. From the Linn website.

"Launched over 30 years ago, Linn's first ever product, the SONDEK LP12, defied, challenged and eventually revolutionised accepted hi-fi wisdom.

At that time, loudspeakers were considered the most important component within a hi-fi system. Linn contended that the source component, in this case the turntable, ultimately determined the performance of the hi-fi system, a fact which was easily proven by a simple A-B demonstration. Linn's 'source-first' approach is now a widely adopted industry standard."

I beleive Linn helped jump strat the high-end turntable/tonearm explosion.

    Al and Dean,

What options do you provide on your crossover upgrades in terms of the screw-terminal barrier block for speaker connections. In other words, is it possible to pay extra for bannana plug terminals on the crossover or a screw-terminal block which will allow much larger spades?

  18. I am looking to purchase a universal remote that has RF capabilities with IR flashers. I am pretty impressed with the Home Theatere Master MX-600, however, I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions about some alternatives.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  19. I. like everyone else on this forum, feel very bad about your plight. However, in my experience you are much better off buying only on Audiogon or this forum. Ebay tends, IMHO, to be a place where people are ready to make a score and have no appreciation for equipment. Whereas, people on this forum or Audiogon are those who appreciate equipment for its value, both monetary as well as the enjoyment of the next owner thus being much better sellers. I don't think I would buy any high-end item on Ebay unless a forum member could check it out localy. I have sold lp's on this forum and because I know that I would be an outcast if I did anything underhanded I made sure that what I said was very conseravative in terms of grade/condition. Likewise, I have bought some very expensive items from forum members and have been very satisfied. I believe this is because they know you cannot bullsthit anyone here, there is too much knowledge.

Bottom line, if you want justice, go to a whorehouse (or this forum), if you want to get ****ed buy on EBay.
