  1. Ghaleon, I really don't think that the NAD is the problem. I have been using low end NAD separates for my KHorns, and though it is a little shy in the bass, it is not nearly what you are describing. I may have missed it in the thread, but why 2 feet off the ground? This can definitely cause a lot of problems. Also, what was the result when you switched the phases? You need to get to the bottom of this!! -F

Maybe I can base an export business out of this. Payment in wire transfers only please! No piracy accepted there!
  3. Max, Hats off to you and your response timing. More importantly, hats off to you for trying to realize that something bigger than all of us just happened here. This thought may be for a whole different forum, and I may not go anywhere with this, but I'll try anyways. As humans, we tend to be as short-memoried, as we are myopic. I can understand you forgetting about this incident a few weeks from now. But I would care to wager that even the kid will soon be sipping coffee at the end of his lunch break soon, with this incident pushed far to the back of his mind. Something deeper, and I don't know what it is exactly, should come from this for the both of you. Woah, I almost freaked myself out! Was just watching the Bus Hijacking episode in your country and I guess I'm just in that sort of mood. -F

What'll happen to all the piracy in countries like Pakistan, Indonesia, China, Thailand?!?! But seriously, to give you an indication of how HUGE a business (read: Mafia) this is in these countries... a company like Microsoft, with the aid of many government agencies has tried continuously to eliminate this and bring their software here on a legal basis. For the past 8 years, they have been unsuccessful. Regarding the prices / profit margins, I'm sure they're as high (a few dollars per cd), but a substantial part of that cost is precisely because of anti-piracy drives against countries like ours. As much as I love being able to get music this cheap, something somewhere really pinches inside me. -F
  5. In Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, piracy of all sorts runs rampant. Books, cd's, software, movies.. you name it. To a large extent, however, in some media, the piracy remains nothing short of a bad imitation. Textbooks, for example, are nothing but photocopies. But man oh man, do they have music and movies down pat! Invariably, you get the odd cd or dvd that just doesn't provide the quality that you expect. But generally speaking, recently, the case is that the stuff you bring home is very, VERY good. A lot of my original cd's, bought in the US when music was still $9-10, are put to shame. Now here's the thing. Fully digitally encoded dvd's, copied off of originally studio released sets go for about 90 Rupees. That's roughly $1.40 (Yes, one dollar forty cents!)! A really nice cd can be bought for one full dollar! Of course, you won't get the printed lyrics, and sometimes the Special Features section may be listed in the Main Menu but not actually be there.... but hey! It's a buck! There was a time where you couldn't get much more than the top 40 stuff. But just yesterday, I bought a rare(well, not anymore) recording of Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Charlie Parker, and other really nice Jazz Cd's. Felt guilty and wanted to share. Maybe I'll listen to one of my 40 cd's that I bought yesterday! -F
  6. Woodog!! Good for you! Congrats. I'll echo others' request... Pics, please! of the Tannoys also, please! -F

I'm very impressed with the combo sound that the Rotel RB-1090 and Klipsch RF-7 speakers create, very revealing, very smooth, detailed, and quite stunning sound, BIG LIVE sound, amazing bass, HUGE soundstage, giving a real big WOW-Factor. People who hear this combo are as stunned as I am. Thanks to all here who directed me towards Rotel, letting me know how well it goes with Klipsch. Thanks again..... I'm very pleased and have no regrets at all. Kevin. ---------------- Wow! Kevin, what all do you have there? Glad you chose the Rotel. Had both the 1080 and the 1090 for a while. Running the 1080 (or was it the 1070? Can't remember) bridged as mono was a great experience too. A little bass heavy, IMO, but great sound nonetheless. Enjoy, and do continue to post about your experiences! Regards,
  8. Midterm evaluation: So far so good... Actually, so far, so great. But something's missing. Heard all of Dave Matthew's Band's Under the Table and Dreaming... What an experience! I think somewhere, somehow the amp started to warm up and started playing MUSIC. For reference, prior to the Krell, I have periodically changed between the following amps: Quad 606, NAD C210 (usually bridged mono), Arcam A80, and (unfortunately too briefly) McIntosh MC30's. Not wanting to get into the whole Tube v. SS discussion now, I'll stay away from commenting on the brilliant experience that the MC 30's were. Short of that, the Quad and the NAD rank a close 1st and 2nd, respectively. The NAD stays connected more just because I hate the thunk everytime you turn the amp on. Anyway, instrumentally, the Krell is by far superior to all the above SS's mentioned. However, I have a nagging feeling in the back of my mine (ear?)that something's not quite complete. Perhaps vocally? Hmmmmm.... Gonna get back to some listening. Thanks for the feedback... gotta get to the bottom of this. -F
  9. DMan, Too funny! Scaredy cat is right! I sometimes feel like Andre the Giant's over protective mother when it comes to my KHorns. They could probably take anything I throw at them... But I still feel I have to wear kid's gloves! -F
  10. Ok. My friend came over, we hooked it up and I sent him off! (C'mon, needed space and time to check it out). Just a quick bit of initial feedback: It's the integrated KAV 400xi . Though it's sleek looking in all it's silver / chrome glory, it's a lot lighter than I expected. I have to admit, I was scared sh!tless powering it up. To quote my friend, it's 200 Watts of "Krell Power"! Whatever that means. Anyhow, it's got 1 set of XLR balanced, but I just ran the source into the RCA's. Plugged in Miles Davis, and it's been about a half hour since I hit play, and it's still going in the background as I type this. Errr... it's, umm... good. The lows are tighter, deeper and punchier than anything I've hooked up before. But what's the Krell fuss about? The highs? Hmmmm... His trumpet is sounding more "jazzy" than I remember on this cd, but perhaps I'm thinking too much about it. Wait a moooooment! Is that high hat really sizzling that much? And wow, is that a brush on the snare? And does it really sound like the piano is sitting a little to Miles' right, slightly behind him or am I just imagining it? Ok guys, gots to run! This is starting to get a little better... More later for those of you interested. I might actually answer the Krell fuss question myself! -F
  11. Hey there! In the neverending search for amplification, a friends (practically) brand new Krell amp has come to my attention... Is it too much power? I've heard this amp on the KEF Reference series speakers, and love the sound. But those things are known for their "more the merrier" attitude towards power. Scared to hook them up. Help out soon! -F
  12. TALVIN SINGH! Ever since I've had the KHorns, and even before that, I've been listening to Jazz and Jazz Rock, and eastern string instrumentals (ala Ravi Shankar, et co.). Of course, the odd swingy, "boppy" number would surface its head into my listening, but generally classic jazz. Until, that is, a friend gave me Singh's latest album "Ha". What a sound! I was immediately awestruck by this man's ability to put a modern touch on the classical Raga rhythms. And having heard practically every recording that Shankar has released, I have never heard the tabla sound as good as it does on this cd. If any of you are familiar with this guys work, or other similar albums, please do let me know. I could eat this stuff up! Be sure to give this cd a listen. It'll most likely be in the "Ethnic" section of your friendly neighborhood record store. Thanks, -F
  13. Wow!! Three Hundred and One Dollars! I don't think you hear about deals like that anymore! Long live ebay!! -F
  14. Randy / Peter, Oooops! I swear that avatar didn't look like a woman to me!! Errrr... anyway.. I've changed it. But that doesn't change the fact that Klipsch offers a "one-ness" with the music that not many other manufacturers offer. At least someone paid attention to my post! "Malefully" yours, Fauzi
  15. Hey there! The WATT / Puppys are no doubt excellent speakers, and, in Wilson's line, I think they are (just barely) worth the price. Having said that, however, I think the rest of the ENTIRE line takes out from the fun of the stereo experience. What good is it having an engineer come in and install the speakers, check out your listening room, suggest changes, perhaps even do them for you, suggest amplification, tell you where to place them, how to sit, where to sit, what time of the day to listen, etc etc... You do nothing!!! In Pakistan, where I live, I would go as far to say that, per capita, we have more Wilson speakers than anywhere else in the world. That's because we have a whole group of people here who are chock full to the brim with money they don't know what to do with, and want to claim their audio "know-how" by showing off their set of Puppies! No!!! The past six months, having worked on my '91 KHorns, finding the right placement for them, still looking for good amplification, etc... Man, this is a journey that you would never get with most REALLY high end speakers. Even if I had the money, just for the experience and "one-ness" that you feel with your audio setup, I still wouldn't go for the Wilsons. Of course, if my wife were responding to this post, it might be a different matter altogether, but she's not, so there! -fgarib
  16. I'm glad to hear that you like the 7500. I have loved my 7400 since the day I brought it home. What kind of remote came w/ the 7500? Is it the same as the one w/ the 7400 or is it improved? (I'm not quite sure how much better they could make it.) Hey guys, Glad to hear from people who like the Marantz HT stuff out there! Not many of us left, ya know? Anyways, the one complaint that I DO have about the SR7300 that I have IS the remote! Coulda done with some backlighting. Don't know if it's the same one that comes with the 7400 or 7500. Other than that, Glenn, congrats on a purchase that'll go a long way. Best 1k you'll spend! Fauzi
  17. Hey there, Yup I do have it set up... and after months of sweating, auditioning, running around, studying... but the fruit is well worth it... I'm currently running a single center, but plan to put the other one as the rear center. Still have to get around to that. The dB gain offset, on the other hand, is more of a complicated matter. In the interest (read: greed) of trying for the best of both HT and Stereo music worlds, I have my horns connected to it's own individual pre-power setup, and TT and CD player are connected to that pre. However, since I wanted to use the KHorns for my HT as well, I have pre-outed from the HT receiver to the Stereo pre's aux input. Therefore, I just have to "fix" a set volume position for pre whenever I want to watch movies. Incidentally, the volume knob has to be at 9 o'clock for HT, and because I have the relative dB gain offsets programmed at that volume level. This way, the offset is practically one to one. To answer your question, however, I don't know what it would be if all the speakers were plugged into the same receiver. I still HIGHLY recommend the KG's. Too bad you missed them. Woulda fit perfectly in that space over the tv!

  19. Hi there! Congrats on your purchase! And on your display of restraint at keeping such a treasure in your basement and not plugging them into any corner at the first possible opportunity to fire them up! Some of the other posts are absolutely right! These mighty speakers, once plugged into corners, shrink like nobody's business. And the sound.... How can that be put into words?!?! Of course, (dare I say it?!?), you can experience more of the dynamic range of this speaker in Stereo rather than in HT. I'm sure people will disagree with this, but it's a matter of personal taste. But either way, with the setup you've described, you are in for a long long time of excellence in sound! Congrats once again. Pics gonna be posted!?
  20. There we go. On page ten of the manual, I see that you have to set the SUBW setting to NO. Have you done that? -F
  21. Hey there! 9 out of 10 chances are that there is some sort of on screen menu where the default setting is that there IS a subwoofer connected to your system, and that all source below a certain frequency should be sent to it. Is there an OSD on this model? Just going through the manual online to see if there are any such settings Is there NO bass (as in, only the mid and uppers are audible) or just LESS than before? Shall get back to you once the darn manual loads up. -F
  22. Hey there! Never heard the Heresy as the center, but I'm running the KG 5.2 as a center for my Klipschorn mains... and MAN does it sound fine. The KG is a sonically matched speaker to the Khorns, and thus, I'm assuming would likewise be a good match for the Scalas as well. What are you running as your rears and other surround speakers?
  23. Hey guys!?! Since my Khorns have been set up, I have not been able to figure out what sort of amplification to use on it for a long term basis. Living in Pakistan, I am able to set up as many auditions as I like, but the choices are severely limited. Soooo... I have tried everything from the NAD C270 (low end SS amp) to Carey Audio's tube pre and powers. Frankly speaking, I love the sound of the tubes, but I don't want to have the hassle of rolling and maintaining the amps and pres. Thus far, the best SS amp that I have tried with the horns is the Krell KSA 250 coupled with a matching Krell pre (the KSL, I think), but I have a feeling that it's real over kill for these speakers. Overkill, I mean, as far as price is concerned, because it's a ten year old used pre and power and the seller is asking for about $5,000. What do you guys think about this match? Also, I've been doing tons (and I do mean TONS) of reading up on reviews, user comments etc, and I'm quite excited about Parasound's Halo JC-1 monoblocks. They're supposed to be 400 Watt behemoths, but they put out 25W of clean, Class A power. Are these a good match for the horns? Because they seem to be a good buy for the money they ask. Help! -F
  24. Ok guys! Here's a good one for you! A slightly used McIntosh MC275-MK-IV available for approx US$ 3,000. Can't audition it. Can't afford a pre at that price right now, but at some time in the future, definitely. But the amp is in GREAT condition. On the other hand, a pair of slightly used Cary Audio M50 Monoblocks, coupled with a Cary pre, again, in great condition, all the above, available for 2,000. All things being equal, what would you recommend? -F
