  1. hello why would you say ditch the phase pre-amp, i am certainly open to suggestions, but it seems to sound very good to me is there a sound quality problem with them i havent heard about, i did get rid of 2 phase linear 4000 series 1 pre-amps as they were problematic, but the 2000 seems better, except for the fact that my power switch screwed up last night and now stays on full time. thanks Joe
  2. i dont have any friends like you, i have to fight just to get what i have and to alot of people my gear is low class, but lucky for me i am hard headed and dont really care if somebody else likes it as long as it does what i want and sounds good im happy, i am tradeing 1 of my ctf-1000 pioneers off to a guy, i made a deal where he will restore one for me and he gets to keep the second one, they both play fine just the ffw/rew are intermittant(work when they want to) thanks for all the support on this site Joe
  3. i can officially say its done, (for awhile anyway), thanks to russ i have a system that almost anybody would at least like this thing sounds better than any system i have ever had or heard although i have to say i am the only person i know that is this interested in true quality sound, my system consists of 2 phase linear model 400 series 1 amps, a phase linear model 2000 pre-amp series 1, a phase linear model 5000 tuner series 1, a pioneer ctf 1000 cassette, a thorens 160 TT with a stanton 681 (with a custom made oak plinth), an akai gx 255 reel to reel, and a onkyo dx 703 cd player, speakers are of course klipsch 1 pair of 1977 cornwalls, and 1 pair of 1979 heresy's, got the heresy's today via ebay and russ(he's the man), i absolutely cannot beleive the difference the heresy's made for my sound i have a small listening room maybe 10 x 20 but does have vaulted ceilings up to about 10 feet, limited space to have speakers set up i hooked one amp to each set of speakers and ran the heresy as a rear with an ambience setting on the pre amp, set the heresy on top of the cornwalls as i have no way to set them elsewhere that would be even close to suitable and i am playing clapton unplugged, i now have what i beleive is almost as close to the real sound as i will ever get, i would swear eric and his guitar are in my house, along with the audience unreal sound THANK YOU P.W.K., I HAVE NEVER HEARD BETTER
  4. hello thanks i thought they were but wanted to checkyou know how it is Joe
  5. hello hope to get some information on a set of 1979 herseys serial# 53s507, and 53s508, my question is really in referance to the horns them selves would the original horns have been metal, or plastic, thanks for the help Joe
  6. i guess you can have your reserve lower than your buy now however it has been my experience that the reserve is just below buy nows, and i asked the seller what his reserve is i havent heard back from him as i did tell him his buy now was way high, maybe i offended him i was thinking 1000 would be a fair price as they will need alot of work, hell i could have bought a set of corner horns for 1000, that all drivers were good just cabinets were toast, but rebuildable, i guess some people just dont watch the market for there stuff Joe
  7. hello im confused a little by some of the replys, is there a current running thru speaker wires that can cause a short there by starting a fire, i have never been shocked by speaker wires, dont understand how they can start a fire , or are you saying if a fire starts through some other means a pair of 12 ga. wires will cause the fire to get worse, i know there is a code for electrical conductive wires running thru a home but i know of no such code requirements for speaker wires, i am in the construction business and i see speaker wires run thru alot of new homes for in wall speaker systems(in ceiling also), but i dont see special wire being used, i personally have installed in ceiling speaker systems without the use of special wireing, just wandering Joe
  8. check out this sale 5742350792, am i crazy or dont very nice sets usually bring around 1500 on average, must be something in the air in ohio, but if any one on here buys these(yea right!!!) i have the woofer for them, cant help with the distortion though Joe
  9. hello i got a quote from forward air to ship lascallas from ca. to maryland cost was 114.00, these will of course be higher all needed be done on the lascalas, was put them on a pallett and cushion between them and shrink wrap the hell out of them so they wouldnt move as they are on a pallet and moved about by fork lift not much danger of dropping etc...i would however with k-horns use 2 pallets one speaker peri would guess in the 300 range by my previous price Joe
  10. i dont know what you have your speakers hooked up to or how they are situated in your room buy i disagree that the older klipsch mids have a megaphone type sound i have used all types of supposed top speakers within the last 12 months trying to get a system back togeather after years of going without, i had infinity rs 2's, kappa 8's, kappa 9's, vandersteen 2ce, vandersteen 2ci, etc.. all speakers without horns, and i bought my klipsch cornwalls using the same equipment to drive all the speakers all solid state gear, the klipsch blow away all the other speakers, hands down!!! as far as out with the old i would say the older speakers were built with more care and quality in mind, than mass production bottom line $$$ of todays market just my opinion but i would say you will get others as far as a decision between the chorus@ and the rf 7, i would suggest get the chorus2 it will always be worth what you pay for them as long as you keep them in nice shape you cant go wrong, could turn around in 5 years and sell for what you pay may even profit!!! just my opinion Joe
  11. yes i agree getting the suspension right is the more important thing, i was actually going over that analogdept site this evening and looked the tuneing sect for the 160 over a little involved but i will give it a try dont look to complicated just time consumeing and tedious, i want to build a nicer case because the original one looks a little crappy to me and i hate pressed wood on anything thanks for the advice Joealso as this is 20+ years old it is getting a little rough, i did take the bottom panel off tonight and to tell the truth it looks to be a rather easy project, hardest thing would be to get the 4 plastic caps off intact to take the thing apart
  12. thanks very much for the suggested cleaner lube, i took your advice and ordered a can of the cleaner lube and also got a can of there preservIT, although i couldnt get on the website tubes they wanted me to download 2 or 3 things but parts express also carries the product so i got it there thanks again Joe
  13. will do that no problem i just got done building a 3/4" oak wall shelf to set it on after the stain dries up she goes. I was going to build a whole new cabinet for this as it is pressed wood, but second thought was to just build a oak surround that would fit the original case tightly then put some trim on top to hide the original pressed wood all togeather any ideas on if this would help or hurt the sound, also i was wondering what a good quality platter mat would be for this i already have a audioquest sorbothane that came with it it looks kinda old and worn also it is a tan color i would prefer a black mat however it is all about sound so i will get whatever is best for sound thanks Joe
  14. well polite is nice sometimes, i stillappreciate honesty on the whole, i just sold the onkyo on ebay got all my money back for it also, im not sure its a P O S#*; but its definately not even close to a thorens as far as sound goes it is built like a tank though weighs a good 10 pounds more than the thorens, maybe its what you call an entry level for the home that isnt meant to be kept for long, you know just long enough to find out how bad it can really sound compared to quality, and just another note THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE ONE OF ONKYO'S BEST that says a whole lot to me anyway thanks for the politeness and the frankness, im kinda hard to offend by the way i got my 1978 heresy's last night tto go with my 1977 corns, both walnut black finish THANKS RUSS YOUR THE MAN!!!!!!!
  15. hello i appreciate the advice and i am useing the lint brush i can say one thing this sure does beat the hell out of my onkyo cpf-1260 with the orofon on it, sound is much cleaner now. Joe
  16. well thanks for all the input from you all i got my thorens 160 and at first sight i was a little dissapointed and considered telling the guy to keep it, MAN AM I GLAD I DIDNT DO THAT, i got it home hooked it up and it instantly sounded better than the onkyo, i have had no problems like before and i discovered i got a hell of a bonus with the deal, i paid 112.00 for the turntable without the guy knowing what the cartridge was he contacted me and asked if i had figured out what it is, so i started checking it out low and behold i have a STANTON 681, cartridge stylus, the sticker had came off the side that identifyies it on sight but behind the plastic nose it is also marked 681 and on top between the screw mounts it says stanton. SURE AM GLAD HE WAS TO LAZY TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER, I GUESS SOMETIMES I DO GET LUCKY, anyone have any further info about the cartridge i would be happy to hear it thanks Joe
  17. well if anyone can help its you guys i need to get a good quality cleaner prefer aerisol for cleanind some of my vintage gear i just accquired a pioneer ctf1000 cassette and of course was told works great but i need new belts which also tells me i will need to clean it also and it is likely the switches and pots etc... will be staticy, scratchey when adjusted, any suggestions, or a link to a site to buy from thanks Joe
  18. hello thought i would chime in on the seller as well i tried to buy the single k33 he had for sale actually called the guy and spoke on the phone his mom answered the phone, we struck a deal and he flaked out on it and i am actually glad he did as i got a pair of original k-33 from 1974 for ten bucks more than he wanted for a single, and i agree he is way over priced on the corns got mine and had them shipped from mich. to md for less than 800.00, with one original k-33 and one generic eminence but a great set all in all 1977 black laquer, love-em
  19. well i picked up my thorens 160 today just got home as a matter of fact, hooked her up and cant begin to tell you the difference this thing makes, completely seems to have gotten rid of the feedback problem, kinda weird this has no ground wire on it, only thing that i thought was a little cheesey is they made the original base out of particle board with a vinyl wood sticker for the wood effect, am definately going to make a solid oak base for her. this thing sounds great just setting it on the cabinet and playing a couple songs cant wait till i get the wall shelf done and set this up according to the specs, will have to sound better, thank you alll so much for the help AGAIN Joe
  20. ---------------- On 12/25/2004 9:47:16 PM ricktate wrote: Some recievers and preamps have a low filter button if you do just turn it on,,,,i think its the arm of the TT moving up and down causing your problem. You need to level the TT and then set the cartridge force around 1 to 1 1/2 grams depending on your arm and cartridge.Do you have a Shure cartrige balance?,,,Rick Tate ----------------
  21. hello again well upon tightening the ground stud and readjusting everything on the preamp for the T T i find i still have the problem so i guess i will definately have to move the T T , and hook up the thorens see where i go from there Joe
  22. happy to hear the thorens is nice T T i havent heard one and i basically read alot of reviews got what i thought was a good price 112.50 so i bought it, there is no filter switch on my set up it does have the correlator for noise reduction though but i dont really care for that much as it takes away from the sound considerably, i did find my ground stud is loose i will have to fix that tomarrow to late to try and take the system apart tonight i will keep you posted on my progress especially when i get the thorens thanks again for all the support Joe
  23. i appreciate the responses, and i was hopeing to hear just this i suspected turntable as the problem but as they say 2 heads are better than 1, i dont need 200 watts but it is what i already have i am comtimplating selling the phase gear to purchase some tube gear, but i really love the look and sound of the phase i know i dont need 200 w p c but it is what i started with, and as far as the turntable goes i just purchased a thorens 160 and supposed to pick that up on monday i have a plan to build and install a wall mounted shelf that will set me further away from the speakers as it sets now i am 6 feet away will be about 9 feet with the new set up again i appreciate all the responses its great to have a place to voice concerns and get advice this site is awsome
  24. allright a new wrinkle in my system, first what i am running, a phase linear 400, a phase linear 4000 preamp, a phase linear 5000 tuner, an onkyo dx 703 cd player, and my cornwall series 1, and an onkyo cp 1260 f, with an orifon om 3e cartridge stylus now to the wrinkle i was listening to santana zebop (winning) not much bass there i turned it up and immediately got a fludder in the speakers(bass), i instantly turned down the volume as i was still at the knob i pulled the grills and both bass speakers upon turning up the volume not really loud maybe at 10 oclock on the dial, began to fludder again of course giveing off distortion again i turned it way down and the speakers still seem to have alot of movement, i then turned off the turntable and tried the tuner at much louder volume i had absolutely no fludder or distortion, i also tried a cd and again no problems at all there any ideas what could cause this. there may be one other thing that may help identify this i do have alot of what i would call feedback(but im not sure that is the correct term) when i touch the turntable or the dust cover and actually anything close to the turntable i will get a definate bass sound thru the speakers and at one point if i closed the dust cover while playing a record the noise was constant and actually overpowered the music all advice will be appreciated thanks Joe
  25. thanks to all you are quite helpful i appreciate all the advice Joe
