what's up with the triode lab piece?
Ive long been looking at that Chinese/Canadian builder... probably something in the 2A3 range.
do you like it?
I have only had it a few days, So far its very nice. I like it quite a bit. Build Quality seems top notch. Fit & Finish is as good as I have seen, My only peeve is its hard to find info / reviews / manual etc...

Back around 2000, I bought an AN DAC 1.1. It replaced a Sonic Frontiers SFD-2. I thought the AN was very good, I bet the 2.1 is even better. I like the sound of non-oversampling DACs and doubt I will go back to a Delta Sigma type again.
Shakey
I am on the fence between the Audio Note and an Audio GD Master 7 (The M7 is set to NOS). The best Delta Sigma type DAC I have ever heard is the PSaudio Perfectwave DaAC MKII..... It honestly has the same traits as the NOS DACs IMHO......................................I could Frankly live with any of the 4 in house DACs I currently have. I'll Put it this way anyone that knows me will know what this means " I am no longer looking at DACs" I also sold a VERY nice vinyl setup. I kept getting pulled back into vinyl because digital was always just a bit off. That is no longer the case for me, Now digital causes the hair on the back of the neck to stand up. It just sounds REAL

How do you like that Orchid? I had a Havana for years and now a heavily modified Pagoda that I really love. My son tried an Orchid in his system, but thought it was no better than the onboard DAC in the Node. I found that pretty hard to believe, but we all hear differently.
Shakey
I agree that we all hear differently. I find DACs more alike than different up to a certain price, Once above it they seem to hit another level and most in that level are more alike than different IMHO. I can not see paying the idiotic figures they want for some DACs. I had an 8000.00 DAC in the house I thought was VERY MARGINALLY better than a 1k DAC.
The Orchid is a very good DAC it punches above its price point. I Like the Tube output it smoothes out the edges. Your son is probably in the camp looking for more detail etc... from a DAC I dont think that is where the Orchid excells. It offers a great overall sound without all the digital harshness. If he were looking for a DAC to do that, I am sure he would re-think the Orchid
I like the idea of the Audio Note being an all tube design. it sounds very good, I need to spend more time with them

Do you have a variac? And is the transformer causing blown fuses with the secondaries disconnected from their respective loads?
Yes I have a variac, I do not know if it blows the fuses with only the secondaries disconnected. I removed the transformer from the amp completely. no solder joints everything is connected with screw down terminals. so a few pics and its an easy swap. The manufacturer said my measurements look fine but under load it could be an issue. He is sending me a Transformer as of 10 minutes ago.
so how would I use a variac for testing without shorting my variac or tripping breakers. I thought I can put a fuse in line on 1 leg of the primary. That should blow first right ?

I Have a Tube amp that is blowing the fuse immediately on power up. The Power Transformer was allowed to bang around inside the heavy metal cover used on the amp. The Transformer leads are measuring (OHM) out at. 5 volt secondary (yellow) is .5 ohms, 6.3 volt secondary (Green) is reading .5 ohms, High voltage leads (Red) is reading 132 ohms across and 63 ohms to the center tap each. and the Primary (Black & white) is reading 4.9 ohms
From what I am seeing on the net the Primary should be closer to 1.5 ohms
anyone have any ideas ? I do not know the manufacturer / part number of the Power Transformer. The amp builder removes that info and only puts his in house info on the transformer. its off a 6l6 SET amp that uses a 6sl6 driver (all the tubes tested good)
I do not want to apply 120 Volts to the primary, if that is shorted it will immediately throw the breaker, I am not a fan of intentionally tripping breakers

Curious about this subject
Background
I never went beyond High School in formal schooling. I did go to the school of hard knocks. I learned a few craft trades by working in them, Plumbing, Carpentry, Roofing, HVAC, Maintenance, & Mechanics...................On the hobby side I would like to think I have learned about Audio, Shooting, & limited body building. It has cost me a great deal in body, financial, friendship, family, and mental state.
As far back as I can remember I have been called upon to fix problems or give advice for friends, family, acquaintances on any and all of those subjects. I have always believed you should stick your hand out in friendship and help about anyone in need. Lately I am feeling like I have allowed WAY to many people to take advantage of me. This feeling has me to a point I honestly do not want to associate with folks (mental status)
Not sure there is even a point to this, I am just wondering if others get to this point and how you might deal with it

Dac is basically easily an 8 with ZERO functional issues I never used Toslink, I have no way to test it. I have no reason to believe it wont work. (I can not personally see any defects but I like to air on the conservative side of grading, so on the A-Gon scale it is easily an 😎 I spent a LOT more $$$ on an Audio Note Tube DAC so wont need this one. It will be double boxed, comes with the original box though no original packing inside the box.( Not to worry I know how to pack for safe arrival) Also NO power cord MHDT does not supply them. The Tube is a JAN Military grade RCA 5670 I got this DAC from a Friend that bought it new about a year / 18 months ago
Buyer covers Fees (If Any) and Shipping to the Lower 48 US states ONLY. I am Fairly Firm on the Price these typically sell very fast used with good reason. Pic is the actual DAC offeredPrice is

PM coming your way

The amp is new except for approx 1 hour of play time for testing. Its very versatile can use either Single End or Balanced, Stereo or Mono. This is the best sounding digital amp I have heard. I could not detect any grain, etch or harshness that I associate class D amps of my past with. There are plenty of reviews on line so I am not going to wax on.
Price to existing forum members is 350.00 plus shipping (I will cover fees)
Pics are the actual amp offered. It comes with original box, packing, and manual as well as generic power cord

I have looked at their amp offerings in the past. If I had deep pockets, I would also like to hear / try them (I don't). They pop up every now and then used but still to spendy for me. Long ago I quit trying to get low power SET to reproduce Bass. I only Bi-amp (for the last 15+ years or so) once you get the amps dialed in its a different animal. I know the VRD shine on bass. IMHO you will not find any low power SET amp to reproduce that kind / quality or bass regardless of parts used. You could always bi amp keeping the VRD on bass duty and SET up high. I did that a LONG time ago for a short spell, then I figured out I had 2K of amp on Bass duties (150 hz & below) & that a cheapish SS amp could handle those duties.
