  1. If I ran the receiver amp to run the rears, would it be as simple as adjusting the gain on the receiver to match the SPL coming from the other 5?
  2. Sounds like I need to do some investigating, even though I probably couldn't afford something like this right now. Thanks for the tips!!! My receiver is rated at 110 x 7, I believe, so would a 125 x 7 amplifier make a huge difference simply becuase the signal would be amplified much better than my receiver does, or would I need to jump up to something like 200 x 7 to get that night and day difference?
  3. Thanks for the tips, and I was just thinking about this the other day. It sounds like the amp will really make a huge difference. Can you guys point me in the right direction as I know nothing about amplifiers? My Yamaha has pre-outs and I will be running 7.1.
  4. I agree on the AR cables. They are probably the best value if you need something in a hurry and have to go to Best Buy.
  5. Correct me if I'm wrong (an I very well could be), but I don't think that gold plating can improve a digital signal, so that shouldn't sway your decision. My friend went to Best Buy and a salesperson told him to buy a gold plated USB cable becuase the data will transfer quicker because it is gold....are you kidding me?
  6. The answer is YES: your collection is safe! The new Hi-Def level players are backward compatible for old DVDs and CDs. Your collection will not be obsolete. Instead, non (DVI) HDMI-compliant displays and receivers will be obsolete. Unless, Blu-Ray decides at he last minute to allow passage of the hi-def signal to be output via the player's Component Video jacks. Then the non-compliant displays shouldn't be an issue. That is good to hear. Thank You.
  7. Does anybody know if HD-DVD & Blu-Ray players will be able to play standard DVD's? Or will my DVD collection be obsolete with the new format as well? I know that HD-DVD's are going to look and sound great, but it will not be enough to convince me to start replacing all of my DVD's.
  8. I think that sign should say: "If I had my real TV here, you wouldn't be able to see this sign"
  9. Sounds like I need to experience the Denon, or go to a Hi-End store and compare a Yamaha vs. Denon a/b style.
  10. Thanks, I was wondering about that. I had it set at 80Hz (YPAO default) before I changed it to 40Hz. I will try 60 and see what I think.
  11. If most of your music files are .mp3 or some other compressed format, then the way in which they were encoded is to blame. Different programs and compression techniques can result in significant volume variance. In fact, iTunes has a volume compensaion that you can assign to a specific song to compensate for this. As far as the DVD's go, unless they are burned, I have no idea what could be causing that.
  12. Right now, I live in an apartment and my living room is about 10 x 24. It seems like the Yamaha is doing a fine job with filling the room (and then some). Am I right to assume that once I move into a house with a bigger living room, that the Denon will potentially make a much bigger difference?
  13. I am currently using the Yamaha HTR-5760 for my Reference HT (See sig). I have been playing with all of the settings and I have it set up to my liking. After using the YPAO, I had to adjust the gain on the center channel and the surrounds, as well as adjust the crossover for the sub down to 40Hz (somebody chime in if that is too low. the RF-35's go down to 37 I believe). The reason that I bought this receiver is that my friend worked at Best Buy at the time and I got it for under $300. While everything sounds awesome, the upgrade bug is always biting, and I was thinking about going up to something like a used Denon AVR-3805. I know that separates are the best, so lets not even go there. What will be the first thing that I notice when I watch something like "Star Wars: Episode III" with my new receiver. Is it going to be a "wow, I can't believe that the receiver makes this much difference", or is it going to be like "Yeah, its better, but not $800 better". I know that the whole Yamaha + Klipsch = Bright thing will come up, but what is going to be the main difference besides that? For this thread, we will assume 100% home theater use.
  14. Good idea, maybe they will have a stockload that they are trying to get rid of, and I can get it for pennies
  15. Thanks for the tips so far. I will try the phase shift when I get home, and I will try fiddling with the cutoff, but the transition of lows from my mains to my sub is not obvious at all. I think that the main problem is room placement, where unfortunatly I don't have many options in my apartment. Thanks for the ideas, and if there are any more, please let me know!
  16. This question is about bass and subwoofers in general, I guess, but I am the proud owner of an RW-12 for the record. I was wondering what the effect is called when the bass sounds "woobly" or "shaky" during a loud explosion in a movie, as opposed to clean, deep, smooth sounding. Is it my sub, is is the phase setting, is it my room placement? Please bear with me as I know a fair amount about home theater, but am severly lacking in the bass department. Thanks for all of your help!!
  17. Will a dealer still be able to order one?
  18. I currently have 3 RS-35's and am looking to complete my 7.1 system with one more. I really would like to buy a new one right now, but the funds aren't totally there. Do you have any idea how hard that it is going to be to find one in the future with the new reference series coming out? Will dealers still be able to get a new RS-35 for a while, or will it be switched over to the new line instantly? Also, if anyone has a used black RS-35 that is looking for a new home, I will take it off your hands if the price is right.
  19. I am going to need one (1) RS-35 to complete my 7.1 system. How long is it going to be until it gets hard to find one?
  20. When I used the YPAO on my Yammie, the center channel was WAAAAAY to low. I have a fairly trained ear, and I could notice a HUGE difference on the dialoge only (center channel) volume as compared to my mains.
  21. Yeah, I was hoping to have it by now too!!!
  22. Picky, I was just about to post that same site. www.brain-damage.co.uk is a Pink Floyd site that is updated on a daily basis, and is the only place that I go to get the facts. They can be trusted.
  23. The tear is very minor and there has been no change in sound quality at all. I was waiting for someone to ask about the cat, and yes, she's still around[]
  24. Thanks for the tips. I was never planning on re-coning, and the driver replacement is my plan. Does anybody know how much this might set me back? What did it cost for your RF-25 driver?
