  1. Pair in walnut locally...look to be in very nice condition...
  2. There is a pair of RF-62s available locally for $300...good deal?
  3. I have to admit that I have always been a snob about preferring Heritage Klipsches... Cornwalls, Fortes, Heresy's, Chorus etc, but I went to buy a vintage Kenwood amp from a local seller last night and he had it hooked up and playing when I arrived. I was surprised at how great the sound was with the Kenny driving a pair of Best Buy bought Icon KF 28s. Even at low volumes, the bass was rich and authoritative.First of all, I've been listening to so many mini monitors for the past 2 years, I had forgotten what a big, full range pair of speakers sounded like. Have to admit, got me to wondering if I should try a pair of big Klipsches from the past 10 years or so...what would your recommnend? RRF series? CF? KLF? Would appreciate some comments.
  4. Which do you feel is the better balanced speaker? Over the years, I have owned many speakers. KG4's were my first serious speakers, but I've also owned Heresy, Forte and Cornwalls (too big for my room). My room is 17 x 13x 7.5 and I listen to jazz, classical and rock. I currently employ a Rogue Cronus Magnum, but also like low powered receivers like the H/K 430, Marantz 26 etc. At this point, I've moved enough huge speakers that I don't want to deal again with Cornwalls or LaScalas. I know the Chorus is a beast but it's not as wide as the Cornwall and, from what I've read, not as bass heavy. I'd like to hear from members with experience with both the Chorus and Fortes...thanks.
  5. Missed out on a pair of Chorus on CL last night for $20. Still kicking myself for not seeing the ad sooner...
  6. Is this something you've tried? I'm always hesitant to mess with a design that's been so successful for so long...
  7. The crossovers are brand new from Crites...
  8. It's funny you mention that because when I first heard them at the seller's house, I knew the woofers were out of phase. Whoever put the K-33 woofer in had it wired out of phase. But they are in phase now. I did not put a meter on them...probably should have when I had them out while I was replacing the crossovers. I'm also wondering if this is just some unfortunate room interaction with the room and the 15" woofers...although the bass was weak in my 13X 17 living room, too.
  9. I bought a pair of Cornwall IIs locally a couple of months ago and have noticed that the bass is weak. When I recently replaced the crossovers with Crites crossovers, I noticed that one woofer was a K-33 and one was a K-34-E, so I'm guessing abuse occurred at some point. The speakers are in the corners of a small room (11 X 13) and the bass seems weak compared to other smaller speakers I've used in this room (Avid 103's, Paradigm Studio 20's). I'm using a Harman Kardon 430 right now while Craig restores my Scott 222C; but I have to admit I'm a little bummed by the results so far. My memory of hearing the Cornwalls at different times over the years was that of a very solid bottom end - even a little thick at times - which appeals to me. Not sure what to do ...
  10. Great receiver and one of the few solid state units that sound great with Klipsch. I have a 730, but right now I'm using a very sweet H/K 430 with Cornwall II's until my Scott 222C arrives from NOS Valves. Enjoy it, it's a terrific receiver.
  11. This is an interesting topic that I have been thinking about since last weekend...I have a friend whose house is like a museum of audio equipment. Many of the finest vintage tube amps ever made. He also has a room crammed with NOS tubes...tens of thousands. When I recently went to his house to buy tubes for my first tube integrated, a Scott 222C, his advice was, that while he would certainly sell me Mullards, Telefunkens etc, to just buy some decent tubes that tested strong and would be inexpensive. He then mentioned that he never uses any of his expensive tubes in any of his own equipment. I think he was trying to tell me a little something about tube rolling...
  12. Finally got around to working on my recently acquired Cornwall II's... The cabinets had a blotchy varnish finish, water stains and smelled of wood smoke. After much procrastination, I removed the drivers and hauled them outside this weekend. I sanded the cabinets with a block sander for about 6 hours yesterday, Needless to say, my arms are hurting today. The raw birch finish looks much better, but certainly not perfect. I now wonder if I should have just painted them black and finished with polyurethane... Today I installed the new Crites crossovers and have them playing now. Both old crossovers had inducters loose and swinging like wrecking balls inside. I immediately notice a more open sound and the slight channel imbalance seems to be cured. All in all, I am pleased. Looking forward to the arrival of a totally restored Scott 222C from NOS Valves and I should be in pretty good shape...
  13. I bought a pair of Cornwall II's locally recently and bought new crossovers from Crites. Well, this morning I started removing the drivers and noticed that the woofers were different. One is a K-34-E, which I believe is the correct woofer. The other one is a K-33. Can anyone tell me about the differences between these two woofers and should I be looking for another K-34-E?
  14. Opened them up today and the connections at the woofer were reversed. The guy I bought them from swore that he never removed the grilles, let alone the drivers. Sure seemed like I was the first one to remove the woofer as it really took some work to loosen it. Could it have possible left the factory this way? And the previous owner certainly didn't have golden ears as he listened to these speakers out of phase for years. Anyway, the bass is back! This is more like it...
  15. Bought a pair of Cornwall II's locally this week. When I heard them at the seller's house, I noticed that they sounded out of phase, but I chalked it up to his less than stellar receiver or that he reversed the wires. I finally had a chance to hook them up today and guess what? Anemic bass. I reversed the polarity of the left speaker and the bass returned. I'm now thinking that I should open it up and check out the wires. Either the binding posts were replaced and reconnected in reverse, or only the woofer was connected in reverse. I don't hear the mids and highs as being out of phase now. Are the driver wires marked for + and - or will I have to remove all the drivers and follow the wiring to the crossover and binding posts?
  16. I took the advice of the forum members here and picked up a pair of Cornwall II's locally today. Man, they're huge! Anyway, I could hear a rattling neat the binding post cup as I was moving them. I removed the cup and there is this hanging there...what am I looking at? Did this come loose from the crossover?
  17. If I put them in the corners of the short wall of the 17 X 13 room, would they be too far apart (apx 10 - 12 feet)?
  18. I have a shot at a pair of 80's Cornwalls. How big a room will I need? I recently moved my system from a 17 X 13 living room to a 13 X 11 bedroom so that I could move my minimonitors out into the room. This wouldn't be a concern with the Cornwalls, would it? I could move the system back to the living room, if necessary. How far from the wall is optimal placement for the Cornwalls? I have a restored H/K 430 and am awaiting a Scott tube integrated to drive them.
  19. I've owned several pairs of Klipsch speakers over the years...KG4's, Forte II's, KG4's again, Forte I's, Heresy II's. I've been into vintage solid state gear for the past few years and had mixed results with some of the combinations. Anyway, I'm having a Scott 222C restored and have been considering going back to Klipsch for an efficient speaker. I was looking at the current lineup tonight and was intrigued by some of the newer speakers like the WF & RF series. Should I stick to another pair of Fortes or Chorus' or are the newer models comparable?
  20. Hi -- I have an opportunity to buy a pair of Heresy III's (cherry) locally for $900. I've not heard them; I used to own H II's and really liked them. In many ways, I preferred them to the Fortes I owned. They didn't extend as low in the bass, but the bass was faster and more accurate than the Fortes, in my opinion. Maybe the Forte's overloaded my 13 X 17 room. I would drive the Heresy III's with my beloved H/K 430 or 730 receivers. How do the v. III's compare to the v. II's?
  21. It was an Eastern Electric integrated...
  22. Yes, I sold the H II's a while back. I just had too many large speakers with the Rectilinear III lowboys that I inherited from my late father in law and the Acoustic Research AR-5's. I will probably regret it someday as I bought the H II's cheap ($150). I wish I had owned my H/K's when I owned the H II's. I think that just a touch of bass from a subwoofer would have made for an excellent full range system.
  23. My last experiece with Klipsch was with the Heresy II's. I tried an 8 wpc tube amp and the results weren't great. I now know someone locally who has been making very nice sounding SET power amps from console and organ pulls. I guess my question is: how will the Cornwalls or Chorus speakers sound with 6 - 10 wpc? I found, with the Heresy II's, the bass disappeared when I used the tube amp. My back aches when I think about lugging around either of these brutes. The LaScalas are too big for the room. I don't know if a bookshelf like the RB-75 (maybe with a sub) would be an alternative...any advice?
  24. Pauln: That's exactly what I'm doing now. Floor placement, close to the corners. Marty
