Did you hook up your speakers correctly? There is no reason for your amp to put out less with the RF-7s versus the 3s.

Overall I prefer my RF-7s. However, I feel the midrange in my RF-25s to be more pleasing. The mids seem brighter and more realistic than the smoother RF-7s. I don't listen to them in the same room so room acoustics could be having an efffect.

What you are driving them with and the effect the room has on the sound is something you may want to consider first. What other speakers have you used and liked, with what amplification? Have you changed the position of the speakers, adjusted tone controls, etc?

The Dec 685 mod you refer to will make a huge difference in your present gear. If you have great amps and speaker you will hear the crap if you have a lousy source. It will actually be more unlistenable. If your source is phenomenal (like the dec 685 or njoe etc.) even a not-so-good amp and speakers will be the better for it. The earlier in the chain you get a better signal the better your output. It does not work the other way around. The Dec modded sony will output more than 2 volts so it may sometimes eliminate or delay the need for a preamp.

Two watts with the RF-7s is a wonderful combination and a joy to listen to. I am astounded every time I fire up my 2 watt tube to drive my RF-7s. As you may guess the bass can be a little light. I sometimes compensate by driving a powered subwoofer in parallel with the mains.

The Polar Express train was located on the campus of Michigan State University across the street from Spartan Stadium for many decades. I used to walk past it every day on the way to class. It was moved from campus only a couple years ago.

Well said St. Patrick. As a newbie here I was baited and ridiculed by Parrot. He seems to relish the role of busting people up with his 1000s of posts arrogance. This board no doubt suffers from participation and new entries when folks of his kind are not held in check. Though I love my collection of Klipsch speakers and would like to share in that community I hesitate to because of the likes of Parrot.

Does it seem odd there is no Beethoven in that bundle?

I am using a Decware Select. The Select does have the added push of a tube modded Sony CDP that outputs 3.2 volts instead of the usual 2 volts. I have designed my gear around high efficiency for the 2 watt Decware. Although several more watts could make the RF-7s really blast with more headroom it is not at all necessary to bruise your way up to dozens of high watts for the RF-7 and the 2way xovers. I would say it takes more watts to effectively push the Heritage series speakers though. The more complex xovers will use up some of those precious watts.
