My TV progression has been 19"...20"...27" tube 4:3 TVs, then 42"...56"...65" 16:9 HDTVs. I think I'm due for a front projector next. []
-
Unless you're really pushing your surrounds I think you'll be fine with the XPA-3 for your front 3 and using your receiver for the surrounds.
-
YOU NEVER WANT TO USE OPTICAL for SOUND on BLU_RAY PERIOD
Unless, of course, you only have optical inputs for audio on a receiver/pre-amp.
-
I don't ever remember seeing this movie in the past. I was very impressed by the picture quality on Blu-Ray - its stunning! I'll give the movie itself 3/5 stars, picture quality 5/5, audio 4/5.

Glad you're happy with them!

http://www.vanns.com has C-3 center speakers on sale for $179.88 new-in-box and one opened box C-3 for $161.89! Great deal for Synergy users - C-3s have been extremely difficult to find!

http://www.vanns.com has S-3s new in box for $199.88 and in their clearance center they have an opened box pair for $179.89. Great deal for any Synergy setups!

Its too bad that Paul Harvey died. Now we'll never hear the rest of the story about Bose.
Search online, you'll find plenty of lab tests of Bose speakers and the horrific frequency response range of them along with huge gaps between where their magical woofer cube crosses over to their magical mini-cube.
I still own a pair of Bose 401s that I bought brand new almost 20 years ago. I enjoyed the speakers for a very long time. I've been enjoying my Klipsch even more so for the past few years.
I don't hate Bose, I just hate when people think that Bose are the best speakers money can buy. Bose has done a terrific job of getting their name out there. There's a thing called "top of mind" that relates to naming the first brand that comes to mind when asked to name a brand of speaker, TV, automobile, etc. Its generally the company that advertises the most that gets the most responses. More money spent advertising does not always equate to a better product.

I've learned to lower the sharpness to almost 0. On my new TV I have it set to 5 and I like how everything looks.
I also had to bump my contrast up, probably at about 70% of maximum.
As others have said, each TV set is different and each room and the lighting in the room will result in different settings being the best for you.
Like I mentioned in my above post, DVDs such as Avia or DVE will help you set everything correctly.
-
Best way would be to hook your sub to the A outputs and then your Heresys to the high level outputs on the sub. Set the crossover on the sub to about 80Hz and the gain control to the 10 - 11 o'clock position.

Hopefully you're not too lazy to click on the link below

Best thing to do is get a setup DVD from Avia or DVE that walks you through color/sharpness/contrast/etc.

H/K are excellent, but I believe Marantz to be a step up. Don't skimp when it comes to what's making your speakers produce sound! []

If its an even trade you are coming out way, way ahead!
-
Correct.

Good to hear that you're getting closer to making a decision. If you by chance live in Minnesota I'd be happy to help you set your system up.

To quote Trey Cannon, Klipsch employee:
"NEVER mount a wall hanging speaker on the ceiling! The cabinet is not built to hold the weight of the speaker mounted like that.
The "Key hole" mounts are only screwed into the MDF back with wood screws. They could pull out and fall.
Then you have the key hole mounts, you can never get them tight enough to be sure they will not move off the screws.
IF you want to have a speaker fall and maybe hit some one or thing, hang them on the ceiling."
From this thread:
http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/120816.aspx
You would be much better off buying stands for them or selling the RS-42s and replacing them with in-ceiling or in-wall speakers.

General subwoofer settings:
Phase at 0
Gain to 10 or 11 o'clock
Crossover as high as it can go, only if your receiver allows you to control your subwoofer's crossover. If it does, start with 80Hz and see how that sounds. You might need to raise it a bit due to the fact that the Quintet speakers don't play that deep of bass and you don't want a big hole in the frequency range between the Quintets and your sub.

If you are driving in from the east be sure and make a stop at Wall Drug in Wall South Dakota. It is a cool place to take a couple hrs and look around.
Oh yeah. That's on the itinerary but I forgot to mention it. Gotta stop for my 5 cent cup of coffee!

I was thinking of somehow coming up with a game or riddle to give her that if she got it she'd know where we're going. But, I really want to keep the surprise as long as I can.
-
Congrats!
If you stick around here any longer you'll be upgrading your subwoofer in no time. []
-
Sounds like fun, does she know where she's going yet ?
And I hope you know we will expect pic's !
Nope. I don't think she'll guess until we're close to Rapid City. I think she might guess that we're still going to Yellowstone because the way out to Rapid City would be the same way we'd take to Yellowstone.
I'll definitely bring our camera and take lots of pics.

I've never heard any of the Icon series, so take this with a grain of salt. The particular model you refer to is a self-powered speaker. You'll have to plug each speaker into the wall and are limited by the internal amplifiers of the speaker itself. In other words, you could upgrade to the most kick-butt receiver/amp in the world but it wouldn't really make any difference because you'd be using the amplifiers within the speaker itself and not from the receiver/amp.
I think most on here would give the nod to the Reference series over the Icon series. If you want to rock it properly, that's what the Reference speakers were designed for. The Icon series were designed to be a more modern looking speaker that aren't as large and take up less floor space than the Reference speakers do.
From what you've described, if you're able to get a good deal on the RF-82/RC-62 combo I think it'll be what you're looking for in sound.
I'm not sure what your budget is, but it looks like on eBay RF-82 pairs are going for around $850 new-in-box, RC-62s are going for around $350 new-in-box.

My wife and I had planned on going to Yellowstone National Park this
year but a call from a resort on a Wisconsin lake a few months back led
us to an impromptu vacation that ate up most of our vacation fund. We
agreed to postpone Yellowstone for another year.
I still wanted to go somewhere fun for a few days so I asked my wife if
I could plan a vacation without her knowing where we were going. She
had to think about it for a little bit but then said that would be fine.
So, we're heading west to Rapid City, South Dakota for a few days. I
have the itinerary all planned: Mount Rushmore, Badlands Nat'l Park,
Wind Cave Nat'l Park, Rapid City Museum of Geology and a waterfall near
Rapid City. She's never been out that way and I haven't been out there
for 20 years.
I was able to book a room at the Super 8 motel in Rapid City for
$35/night! Comes with a free continental breakfast every morning and
free coffee in the room. I guess it helps to be traveling during
off-peak season!
Taking my wife on a surprise vacation

Getting closer to vacation time. I asked my wife where she wanted to eat on vacation and she said "I don't even know where we're going!" I told her I had to tease her a bit about it. She said she doesn't want me planning anymore surprise vacations. []
