  1. I am in the same boat as you. I just ordered a Sony S360 BD player, on its way, and I got an older Onky receiver which does not have HDMI.

I'll be connecting the Sony BD player via an optical cable to the receiver. Though I won't get HD audio, I'll still get the higher bitrate 5.1 DD and DTS.

And I've read that not many BD disks today TRUELY has 7.1 disreet channels. So I don't think you will be loosing much audio here, at least that's what I hope.

Blu-Ray isn't just about 7.1 versus 5.1. The lossless audio formats present a significant step up in overall sound realism and dynamics.

If your Onkyo receiver has 5.1 pre-amp inputs and your Sony has 5.1 or 7.1 pre-amp outputs you can connect the two using those inputs/outputs and also get the current HD audio formats.

  2. Klipsch refers to the high level outputs as "passthru" which as far as I know means that the high level outputs don't filter any bass from the high level inputs. I would highly doubt any subwoofer damage would occur by listening to your speakers without the subwoofer being on.

  3. You're right, but doesn't the player have to be connected to the receiver via HDMI for this to work?

Nope. As long as the Blu-Ray player has 5.1 or 7.1 outputs via RCA interconnects and your receiver has 5.1 or 7.1 pre-amp inputs you'll also get the HD sound formats.
  4. I missed $500 Klipschorns the other day.

Since the inception of craigslist I've seen ads for:

    The above-mentioned Klipschorns

    $500 9/10 condition Belles

    $450 9/10 condition RF-7s

    $600 Cornwall II/Academy combo

$500 9/10 condition KLF-30s (best friend ended up buying them!)

    $300 CF-4

And a lot more than I can remember. I wish I had more expendable income, I'd give Colter a run for his money.

  5. You could use the F3s with a C2 but a C3 would obviously be the perfect match. C3s are very difficult to find, so keep that in mind.

I think at this point you should look into a new receiver, considering your comment about it.

Looks like on eBay STR-DE598s have sold for about $75 tops. You could sell your Sony plus the Quintets and use the money towards a new receiver.

Lots of people on here have had good success with Harman/Kardon, Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo and Marantz receivers.

  6. Thats interesting Monty, I was thinking about doing something like that myself but was wondering how the settings would impact the amp. Like what in the preamp does the functions work/not work. Obviously have to level match, does the master volume on the receiver work all channels, or do you have to use the amp knobs seperate?

The signal going out a pre-amp output is raised and lowered along with the pre-amp's master volume, controlling all speakers at once. If it didn't it would be considered a line-out which is what most CD and DVD players have.

Of course, you will have to adjust the amp's gain controls if they have them.

  7. That's almost identical to how I have my KG 3.5s set up as side surrounds and I think they work very well. Mine are a little farther away from the couch and are sitting on stands that are only about 5" tall so that the drivers sit slightly higher than the couch.

You could always get a pair of Synergy B series bookshelf speakers as surrounds if money is tight right now.

  8. Well, if you replace your front mains then you'll have to replace your center speaker. And if you do that you'll have to replace your surround speakers. Why don't you let your wife know that she's going to cost you guys a lot of money. [:)]
