  1. I haven't made up my mind yet. But I will tell you this, I had them both hooked up for a while and put the CW's away so I could listen to the Altec's all by themselves. They are very smooth and accurate. The bass isn't quite as low as the CW's but is is very punchy. The horn doesn't go as high either - common for older Altec horn drivers, the new ones do - mine rolls off after 12K but it's very pleasant to listen to. I've had them cranking at near 110dB and they do not fatigue. They are most certainly NOT harsh. I played some Tommy Bolin "Post Toasty" at 104dB for the wife just to show her that loud music that is not distorted sounds very good indeed. She agreed. They sound very good at modest volumes too 75-85dB. My plan for the time being is to sell the Klipsch's to finance a Model 19 build. It is no secret that Altec makes a superior horn. I've heard La Scala's and liked them. I've not heard Khorns but I can get a mint pair of 19's for 1/2 Khorn price. There aren't any around me so I'll have to build my own. IDK. I thought the CW's were the holy grail when I first got them but there are other good sounding vintage speakers out there. I shouldn't have started down this road, I fear it's a one way street and there's no turning back. [] -Mark
  2. They're finished in oak.Of course I'll listen to them for a little while but they will have to be pretty good to beat the CW's or Altec's. I would love to sell some of the closet stuff. I have a H.H.Scott 99B in very good condition for $150 H.H.Scott L-10 tuner for $75 The CW's arent hooked up but I haven't made up my mind on selling those yet. I'd need $850. I am going to pack the 30's with 2" stryofoam on bottom and top. 3/16" plywood across the drivers. 1" styrofoam all around. They should ship w/o damage I would think.
  3. Well I would keep them if I could but the only reason I was able to buy them was a promise to the wife I would turn a profit with them. I need to finance this habit with something other than non-discretionary income.[:'(] She's been more than patient with me, letting me go nuts for a little while and devote a LOT of my time to tweaking and listening to music. Hopefully I can turn a couple bills with these and do something for the house. A start on the landscaping would get me out of the dog house. Just moved into a new house and she's tired of dirt for a yard - imagine that. So don't be too PO'd at me. I love this hobby but I can't keep all of it. I've got stuff I ain't even listening to, sitting in a closet, so it's hard to justify the need for more stuff. 'course I'll have to give them a test drive. []
  4. I snagged 'em. Pick 'em up this weekend.
  5. These are local to me. Good to very good condition. At $400 is it worth it for a pair?
  6. Mr. Thebes, Would you explain the effect you get when using different impedence taps on an amp? How does the bass change vs. tap used. Thanks, Mark
  7. That is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. *drool* Super nice. 902's go plenty high for me - can't hear a sound over 17K. 2-way crossed at 1200hz, right? Why did the 19's cross so high?
  8. Where do you get phenolic diaphragms? When I replaced mine I thought BEC said they weren't available?
  9. This guy totally destroyed a pair of 'Scala cabinets. Who knows why? It just ain't right... http://denver.craigslist.org/msg/125860584.html
  10. DM, Did you place the felt inside the horn mouth to the ouside edge or did you put it on the front flange of the horn (in the same plane as the motor board)?
  11. Do better than that. Save the pdf file on your hard drive and then print it out and keep a copy with your manuals. That's what I did for my 730. There's no telling how long Harman Kardon will keep them up on their website.
  12. Here's the tech manual with schematics. Maybe it'll tell you. http://manuals.harman.com/hk/Service%20Manual/hk630%20sm.pdf
  13. it's called a Model 19, mark ......[] Thanks Duke. - Got my eye on a pair right now. Would have to sell my CW's for this upgrade though. No woodworking involved. []
  14. What do you call a Corwall bass bin with an ALtec 811B or maybe even a 511 on top or in it's own separate top cabinet? I think it's been done but don't know who. Now THAT would be an improvement. Why mess around with a klipsch horn & driver when superior units are available? If your going to modify a CW, go full throttle. I think it would sound great and be a two way design to boot. -Mark
  15. I just replaced the bulbs in my HK 730. They were fuse type 8 volt 300 ma. They look like little 1/4" fuses. Mine took 6 including the FM meter. Agree with the deoxit. I took the reflector for the bulbs off first to gain access to the switches and bulbs. HTH, Mark
  16. I also use a DIY RCM. For now it's just an old turntable (gutted), an o-ring sealed disk with offset knob for spinning the record and a cansister vacuum wit a custom attachment I built - very close to VPI's clear tube. Some day I will put the thing in a box like www.records but for now it works PDG.* *pretty dang good
  17. Sorry for the lo res but you can see the foot markers and should be able to interpolate the inches.
  18. His recent purchases include mid and tweeter horns and two Klipsch badges. Is he selling clones? knockoffs? bad spelling?
  19. I'm not sure of the thickness of the motor board. I wasn't paying attention to that detail when I pulled the speakers to change a tweeter dia. They are in there with wood screws. I was careful to turn them backwards a little until I found the thread so I wouldn't make new threads and strip the holes. (bad description but I think you know what I mean) I'm guessing the motorboard is 1". If you really need to know I can pull a driver out and check.
  20. They are flush. Even with the motor board. Actually the horns on mine are in about 1/32" probably due to the depth of cut by the router? I think they were supposed to be flush. HTH
