  1. Has anybody tried the Dared SL-2000A Tube linestage preamp. I know it wouldn't do my entire job because there are so few inputs, but for cd and dvd only it might be pretty good. thanks. Mark
  2. I just saw an inexpensive Dynaco PAS-3, its been modified with new caps, does anybody have any experience with them. For the price, it seems like a sure thing.. Mark
  3. If you want to save part of your $600.00, The Sony DA555ES will get you up and running with cash to spare. I know its a Sony.....but it has tons of whistles and bells. It will do jumping jacks while making popcorn and getting you a beer.......its really cool for watching sports events. There are all kinds of arena/stadium simulations that are fun to play with. I use one to power my deck and garage tunes. You should get some replies now......
  4. There's Mcintosh C32 preamp on ebay that ends in a few hours, its at $465.00. Its solid state but looks very flexible. Maybe I'll try that one. Small investment, Mc. stuff will always resell, besides, it has to be better then the Carver I'm using......thanks folks. all the best, Mark
  5. Thanks Guy. That puts me at ease. It doesn't look like there is a way to control "EQ"ing on the VTL. The photos on the website aren't very clear and I don't see anything in the description that I can conclude is adjustable. I switch back and forth from cd's, music dvd's, tapes and phono......the cd's and dvd's are fine listening direct for the most part, but the phono and tapes I'd like to EQ. We record our band on a cheap little cassette boom box (we use it as a notebook, not for actual recordings)and play them back right away, It would be nice to be able EQ it.....
  6. Thanks for all the suggestions. I was set on buying a Mcintosh until I saw the VTL products. They look very well made. Is anybody using a VTL preamp that would care to share their thoughts on them.........sound, flexibilty and durability..... thanks, Mark A review I just read on the (VTL) TL5.5 mentions a "a single ended line source". What exactly are they saying? Are they saying that it should be used with a dedicated system and works best when playing only cd's (ie:one source). I use my system with many different sources. Maybe I'm better suited with something that I can EQ?......
  7. I'm in the market for a preamp. I suffered long enough with a Carver CT17. I have Mcintosh mc30 amps(1958 or so) sitting on top of a pair of Khorns (1973). I'd like stay around $1200.00.....I've looked at the Mcintosh C34V. I liked the amount of inputs it offers. I have 2 tape decks, cd, dvd, phono and a vcr. I haven't looked at anything brand new yet.....I'd love to here your thoughts..... Mark
  8. Thanks for the fast replies. I'm sealed pretty good in the corners. The owners manual that came with the speakers said to use automobile floor mats cut into strips stapled to the back flange. I may try the pipe insulation. That sounds like it may do a better job. The old room they were in had a carpet on the floor. The new room has ceramic tile. That may have something to do with it. I may add some area rugs to try to soak up some of the reflecting........thanks again.......has anybody changed their 15" drivers? What did you use. Mark
  9. Hello people! My last post was quite some time ago, I moved and did alot of renovating which included a home theater and a seperate listening room just for my audio setup, oh yeah, and a new kitchen.......I want to improve the bottom end of my khorns. They are not as tight and pronounced as I'd like them. They are all original except for new wiring. I used AudioQuest wires. I drive them with a pair MC30 Mcintosh amps. Has anybody changed thier drivers. What did you use. Will the ALK crossover's make a big difference? Thanks.....Mark
  10. Thanks Jeff, I think I'm going for the 25's....theirs a pair in white on ebay for $325.00. They should make the hot tub party's even more enjoyable! Mark
  11. thanks Jeff, I've never herd of that manufacturer before. Are they available over the internet.....I live in a rural area and would have went with the La Scala idea, if they were weather proof.......
  12. Its that time of year again for us northern folks to bring tunes to the outdoors. Has anybody been using the ca-8t all weather speakers........how is the low frequency on them. I've tried JBL, Altec and Polk all weathers and can't find a pair with a decent (how about any) low frequency. Any suggestions????? thanks.....Mark
  13. Thanx QMAN......I have a dolly and enough cardboard and blankets to pretect them....it will be a two man job no matter how you look at it, but breaking them into two pieces should make them easier to tame,,,
  14. I'm moving my place of residence and need to disconnect my khorns for transport. Before I waste time tinkering, I'd like to hear from some of you have.
  15. I don't think this setup was mentioned yet, I appologize if it was, I have a sub next to my tv connected to the LFE (Rel Storm II) and another smaller sub (KSW-10)connected passively to my rear surrounds behind my couch. The ksw10 great support for the surrounds and the Rel Storm II connected to the LFE really rumbles.
  16. Hi Rune....I ditched my SS Carver amp for a pair of 1958 McIntosh Mc30's to run with 1973 khorns and couldn't be happier. Played around with alot of wires and dampening material for my components. Absolutely splendid! Good luck. Tubes and Horns for sure!
  17. rowoo....I've done the same thing with ah AH! TUBE disc player, McIntosh mc30's and Khorns, with great results. The disc player has its own volume control, the Mc30's have thier own gain control.....so I can play around and get the right mix. With the amp gain turned up, using the disc player to control the volume, I went from almost complete silence to cranking loud. It took alittle messing with, but it was a noticable improvement on my system..........tblasting has a good point with line conditioner thing.
  18. If you like Radiohead......you should try Marillion......very nice modern prog rock.
  19. I recently replaced a SS Carver with Mcintosh MC30 tubed monos...I really like the Mc's. This is my first tube amp....they can be had for under a grand in perfect working condition.
  20. I think the term "FINISHED" is used very loosely in this instance. I told my wife I was finished with my HT....which I am finished. I bought the reference series, Sony 5.1 reciever and a couple subwoofers....does a great job! The stereo is and will always be "work in progress" for me. Two completely different systems in 2 different rooms. I wouldn't dream of combining them. The HT does have a nice music channel, but there's nothing like crancking up those big ol' horns!
  21. Mojo-Mdeneen hit the nail on the head! I use my Mc's/Khorns for music ONLY, I have a seperate system for HT. That lets me run my disc player directly into my amps. When I want to spin some vinyl, I switch the interconnects back to the preamp, alittle awkward right now, but its work in progress! I just picked up an AH! New Tube disc player that when run direct is real nice sounding. Hopefully the original poster "Dave_Carpenter" is listening. I think he and were at similar crossroads a couple months apart.......with the Carver to tubes changeover.
  22. HT_ANDY....I recently replaced a Carver TFM22 with a pair of McIntosh MC30's (tube monos) and am very satisfied with the difference. They have mcintosh power (6L6) tubes in them, which I thought, big deal, RCA makes them for Mc, but RCA must make them to a different spec. I've tried Svetlana's and RCA's.....then stuck with what sounded best to me....the mc's.....the amps are quite a bit different then the Carver. I'm using them with Khorns. The Mc's sit right on top of the Khorns with Audioquest Slates connecting the two. The only thing I notice is a ringing (not very often) in the mid horn which I didn't notice with the Carver. I've read thats correctable with dynamat...I'd take that anyday over the SS power. I'm definitley sold on tubes!
  23. Fear not bklyn8......I had a pair of Khorns shipped from San Diego to Buffalo, NY with no trouble at all! I used a packaging service as well to pick them up an box them properly. They arrived without a scratch. I paid a bit more then you paid, but it was well worth it in the end.
  24. Check out the REL subs. Very musical and they do a nice job with HT as well, in the event you go to an HT setup. You can get into a used REL storm III for about $850.00.......I wouldn't go much lower in thier product line with La Scalas.
  25. Mdeneen...thanx for the info, that sounds exactly what I'm looking for. I'm alittle confused by the link? It made me want to hang ten, not buy a switch
