  1. These Corns are too much to lug around. What do you all think? Are they better for the TV to watch gunfire and explosions occasionally and go "neat!" Or should I bring them back up and run them to my stereo along with my KHorns? Would they contribute to my KHorns much? What is the best use?

    It's time to decide.

  2. Perfect response! My sentiments, exactly. Not set up anymore....

I do have the extra Corns. What to do? Get a cheap, decent receiver for movies and enjoy a few explosions and gunfire, or bring them back upstairs and run them to my amp along with my KHorns and have 4 speakers on my stereo?

  3. Wow! I made a Bunch of lists! I am deaf, cheap, have terrible tastes in music, don't own any K'Horns to wizz off of, have about $1.25 invested in wires of all sorts, have never owned tube Anything, Love my Heresies, and am pretty happy in spite of all of the above!! [:P]

Tommy... Chalk him up to another lost soul. [;)]

  4. I have seen so many posts with folks having LaScalas/Cornwalls, etc. hooked up to HT. Are they really watching movies and driving these speakers at the same time?

I'm just wondering because I got KHorns to replace my Corns on my stereo. So, I brought down the Corns to TV. I can't imagine why people would need Corns or better for this purpose.

Maybe they're listening to the stereo through the system as an all-in-one and not really driving them for TV. True? Then, I get it.

But nobody is seriously pushing these speakers to watch movies are they? It would seem like total overkill.

  5. Welcome, Rock! The answer is any Klipsch you want to buy that are in that price range.

The undisputed best is Klipschorn, which you can find used for $2,000.

Next is either LaScala/Belle or Cornwall, depending on whose opinion you want. THe Belle is a prettier LaScala. You can pick up LaScalas for around $1,000-1,200 used. You can pick up the prettier Belles for around $1,200-$1,500 used. The controversy is the LaScala/Belle do not deliver the bass that the Cornwall does, but they do deliver more punch in the mids.

You can get nice used Cornwalls for $600-800.

All of these a kickin' speakers.

You should feel comfortable getting used ones, as long as you get to see and hear them. If they sound fine, they're fine. Klipsch makes a good, durable speaker. Lots of used ones pop up here all the time. I would even trust buying some from some of the familiar members of this forum, sight unseen and sound unheard. Keep an eye out.

  6. It's over my head, but I got un-lazy and brought down the Crown amp/Yamaha pre-amp combo and hooked it up. Sounds the way it's supposed to. Unfortunately, TV is what it is. It'll be nice to watch an action-packed DVD!

If I get a set-up for TV to use w/my Cornwalls, I think I could easily get by without a great amp. Maybe just a decent receiver w/a remote. After all, it is only TV. It would not pass by a long shot for serious stereo - but I got that covered upstairs in the "drum room" where it counts.

What do you think? Cheap, decent receiver for TV?

  7. Okay, I made it faster than I thought. After minor back surgery Monday, I'll be okay again.

Well, guess what? If any of you have seen my numerous past posts telling people you'd better run a pretty dam* good amp to see what Klipsch are about....

My theory rings as true as ever!!!!!

My Wal-Mart special TOTALLY SUCKS! [:(]

My poor Corns are now being abused through a Sony that at absolute MAX volume, makes it sound like my buddy crawled down a deep sewer pipe and is trying to say something back up to me. The sound is like coming out of a tin can.... like... like...

Guess I need to run my Crown down next.... Maybe later. My Crown is best where it is ..... right by my KHorns. [:)]

But I'll check it out sometime, and if I like it, I'll be on asking you guys who wants to dump a good Crown for cheap.

I bet Michael does... [:)] Michael?

  8. Okay, these many posts about using Corns for HT has got me going. I'm going upstairs to carry down my Corns to my 65" DLP. I will hook them up to my Sony $150 surround package "amp" complete w/MDF speakers from Wal-Mart - if that's what you call it. Y'ep! I am carrying them down the stairs all by myself. If I'm not back in an hour, somebody call 911.

We'll see what these Corns sound like through my Wal-Mart special.

  9. Everyone else -

La Scalas have *NO* bass. Nada. Ziltch. Not There. The bass Is no More! It has has Ceased to Be! It's Expired and gone to Meet its Maker! It's a Stiff! Bereft of life, it Rests in Peace! If you hadn't Added a Subwoofer it'd be Pushing up the Daisies! Its metabolic processes are now History! It's off the Twig! It's Kicked the Bucket, it's Shuffled Off it's Mortal Coil, Run Down the Curtain and Joined the bleedin' Choir Invisibile!! THIS IS A BASSLESS SPEAKER!!

Ray, past owner and loyal fan of La Scalas anyway.

Ray, why not tell us how you REALLY feel! I think you should have tried aiming them at 45's from the corner and installing some foam in opposite corners before you got rid of 'em. [:P]

  10. I never put much stock in Chorus since my friend's system did not sound as good as mine w/Corns. But I've heard a few of you Klipsch enthusiasts say they do compare well. So, maybe it was my amp. But I sure like the "vintage" look of solid birch Corns w/cane grill covers. It's the perfect speaker to get that "Those old beauts really rock!" response.

  11. Dean, my Crown defender! [:)] That's what I think. I got my Microtech 1200 by a lucky upgrade. 20 years ago, I had just purchased a new 600 from a shop, and I had crappy cables - wasn't getting sound. I didn't know they were crappy. I took the 600 back for them to look at it. They accidently shipped my 600 to a buyer in Seattle. Go figure how they made that mistake! They gave me a new 1200 in its place at no charge. Lucky me...

Just curious.... what did you mean by the 600 does not have the sound of a tube amp. Is it not as good in some respects? I never heard my speaks through a tube. Can a tube deliver the punch like the Crown?

Jeff, that's my same amp dude! It's in the PA rack and doesn't get much use. How loud is the fan and do you use yours in your HT rig in any capacity?

    Michael

The fan is audible. It's like a regular room fan we would use to cool a room when we don't want to use the A/C. At real low volumes, you hear it, but you come to realize that you might subconsciously just think the room is a little cooler, so you tune it out. Don't get me wrong. I'd like no fan sound at all, but that fan is probably needed for such a workhorse amp. I have cranked that bugger many times over the years. Probably would have had a fire or two with other fanless amps. At least I think I cranked it. I don't have the ba**s enough to go past half-way because it gets like an earthquake in there, and I get a little scared.

As far as HT, I've used it there. I'm not big into HT, but in the past I hooked it up to my TV and listened to (watched) "Apocolypse Now" through my Crown and Corns. Man, those helicopters really punch! I'll probably bring my Corns downstairs and do some HT-ing now that I got KHorns. It used to be so inconvenient because my main purpose for my system is to unwind and jam on the drums to favorite rock tunes. Then, I get to pretend I am part of the band and live the part of my life that conscience kept me out of. Lugging equipment is not my idea of fun. But I've often wanted to bring it back down and watch (listen) to another action-packed movie like "War of the Worlds" or something. It's just fine for HT - fan and all. Just like a little fan sound, which if you did not know better was either cooling the room a little or freshening the air. You just don't get annoyed with it once you realize it wouldn't be any more intrusive than say, a ceiling fan, which many of us use all the time and don't get bothered.

  12. I am ticked that I have 25 1/2 years with this company and I am 3 years away from being able to retire early and it looks like I will be out of a job in 1 year or less due to Government cutbacks. There isn't anything within 200 miles that pays 1/2 as much as what I get now and there are still 12 1/2 years left to pay on my house

Cal, just make sure you know the full story on how the cut-back plan will be implemented. Are they targeting near-retirement folks at a disproportionate rate to younger ones? I'd get an attorney lined up. The law prohibits age-based discrimination. And that does not just mean "because of your age." It means if the employer lays off folks close to retirement to save more money in the long haul, the practice has an EFFECT of unfairly discriminating against certain employees based on age. After all, age is definitely a factor for getting close to retirement. Don't sit back and get screwed. Be proactive and get an attorney before it happens. You might find you can prevent its happening in the first place. Good luck!

Thanks but this is a multi BILLION $ company. If the cutbacks happen, it is on union seniority. Those with the least time goes. If the cutbacks do happen, the plant I work at will be closed (no other plans for it at the moment) and about 6,000 people will be out of a job, not to mention the thousands that are in the private economy that we feed.

Alas I am but a numbered cog in the larger machine.

I see what you're saying, Cal. Man, that really sucks to have to face that prospect. Best wishes for you and your future.
