  1. yea rob I said that you can take out the reverb in an earlier post. but even if u turn reverb down to flat, u still have the signal running through a dsp, no? compare that to the denon (if u want to dive into the schematics ) back to your original program...
  2. yea like we said. but the original question ended "is this normal". as ch described it & if he was listening to DTS DVD in 5 channel stereo mode then the answer is: no. there's a big difference between answering a question (w/ tech data, etc.) & solving a problem.
  3. ch, i believe u have to change the mode yourself. basically if u put in an HT dvd u choose an HT mode, if u play a CD(analog 2 channel) choose 5 channel stereo. i think the auto function automatically decodes at the highest level of the material. it doesn't automatically change the dsp modes- u have to do that. or is this wrong?
  4. thanks stone - I missed that too. then the answer is 5 channel stereo is for 2 channel material enhancement w/ 5 speakers like music CDs. for 5.1 channel material(HT) use one of those modes, unless one likes downmixing 5.1 discrete channels to 2 channels. i sure don't. american beauty probably has a lot of the mix in the center (a lot of dialogue - don't remember that movie having a lot of surround effects material). movies are all mixed differently w/ different material - ch, try an action packed movie like U-571 or Gladiator in DTS w/ an HT mode on the denon. that should give u different results.
  5. yea my %&^$ sony sends the same channel info to the L front-rear & R front-rear speaks for those dsp modes like "live house" or "disco" for 2 channel material like CDs. but it delays the signal to the rears for a spacing effect (reverb). the denon mode sends it at the same time without the dsp messing w/ signal timing. i'd have to use A+B to get this, but then i couldn't use those same rears for surround effects w/ HT(5.1). i think besides denon, some of the newer units from yammy & even sony do now offer this (must have been losing sales to denon)
  6. rob, the denon 5 or 7 or any 8 (what's that including the sub?) or 9 channel stereo really just uses stereo or 2 channels and f.e. w/ the center uses a L&R channel matrix. like i've said - 5 or whatever channel stereo is a misnomer (good buzz term for marketing though.) at most, besides the 2 discrete channels, u may get a L&R matrixed channel - but even calling that a channel is pushing it- it ain't no discrete channel. i think what people are looking for is no added effects by time delay, reverb, etc. the yammy may offer 4 speaker stereo, like A+B on a stereo amp, if this dsp mode adds none of these effects.
  7. quent - I prefer to look at it as a double' entendre. oxy...- where is the contradiction in that phrase? small dealers have no feelings for customers? maybe u could explain? if that's a slam on usage, are u an english teacher? if so, then u misspelled dealer so u better circle it yea it won't go away as long as the internet's available & companies don't respond more quickly. but it is beating a dead horse so i promise to not bring it up again.
  8. i think ch is talking about dolby digital vs. DTS. w/ movies that have both u have to choose DTS in the dvdp menu like languages. for auto, most default to dolby. DTS on my system makes it much easier to hear the dialog from center w/ less breakup. no overload there for me. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  9. whatever, i look at the speaker for the need. bi, di, tripole like the rs-HT; direct radiating like the sb good for music monitor but not bad for ht.
  10. also depends really if u want the rears more for music(rf-3) or HT(rs-3). also depends on which receiver u have. i have cornwalls for rears but seriously considering throwing some bipolar speakers on top (like the rs) just for HT use. bipolar speaks spread out the sound for a wider soundstage & better rear HT effects. depends also on the size of your room. a lot of depends ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  11. that would be the overall db levels for front, center, rear & sub w/ a basic 5.1 config. should be in your receiver's set up & called like level. don't confuse this with equalizer settings which imho are just for fine tuning listening preferences. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  12. o-righty jhawk. yea that 5/7 channel stereo is made for whats u got - direct speaks - like in the proverbial recording studio. rock on!
  13. to make clear, A & B surround will always play the same info. it's just that w/ the individual delay settings on your 4800, they can play the same stuff at different times. make sense?
  14. jv, the B can do either depending how u switch/set your decoder in the 4800 & the type material you're playing. A&B are the same channel designation, but how u tell the decoder to decode determines whether they're a unique channel or a duplicate (like THX vs 5 channel stereo which really isn't 5 discrete channels but 2 channels w/ a matrix/mix in the center). if u go like above - A+B, the amp will split the power available between A & B surrounds, just like an old stereo receiver where u could hook up 2 more pair of speakers & run A+B getting half the power to each pair. should be ok though w/ those efficient klipsch speakers
  15. actually jv, looking again at the 4800 manual, u do have individual delay settings for each of the surrounds (A,B & Rear Effect) -so all u should need additional are the speakers & then u can have the 2 sets of side surrounds w/ different delay settings - get a great HT effect where the like a plane flying over goes from the front to 1st sides to 2nd sides then to rear surrounds. excellent. this must be what some movie theaters do - have delays set differently for each of the many sets of sides & rears to get that sweeping effect. hey everybody w/ a denon that likes HT should have 6 surrounds i must get a denon! disclaimer: i don't own this unit. just downloaded the manual(s) & have a great interest in acquiring 1. this is probably old for u, but other guys is there anything u see wrong about the above?
  16. now i think i was just being too picky & cheap. i'll plan on just getting 2 sets of dipoles instead of trying to run the the cornwalls for both music only direct & rear surround effect speaks. iow, I could still use the corns as the B surrounds & even have them in (A+ for the HT. but for music take out the A surrounds (this can be done i'm sure?). so I have to get 4 like the rs-7. mo $, mo $
  17. jv, great speaks already. if u're talking 2 sets of side surrounds & 1 set of rear surrounds, you're set already. w/ the 4800 speaker connections. put 1 set of side surrounds on A surround & the other set of sides on B, then run them together w/ the A+B surround option. then u can run your rear surrounds from the 5200 attached to the effects preouts of the 4800. note the 4 side surrounds will get the same channel info at the same time, unless the 4800 has some control for delay to A & B surrounds. this would be a great set-up for HT. OR w/ the forte mains though, u could use the 5200 for the mains (as I guess you're doing now). then all u do is connect the rear effect surrounds using the main speaker level/effect connections of the 4800 & set up the power amp in the 4800 to drive those instead. that would probably be best, especially if for music u like to use just the forte & sub (2 channel stereo).
  18. thanks gil, that makes sense. my trouble really is I don't have a free corner available. need to get up & do that sub in the listening position test. others that have done this & end up w/ the sub in the middle of the room by a wall (mine is currently on the side wall except more forward toward the mains). mine sounds good where it is but I feel there's a better place as i put it there mainly because it's the only free space I have w/ the other components placed. so if i do that test most likely i wouldn't be able to put it in the optimal position anyway (hence the put a wall around it concept). i guess what i really need is an interior designer w/ an emphasis in sound ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  19. if u don't have the room layout to put the sub in a corner, is there some kinda portable or temp wall or barrier u can put behind or to the side of a sub for bass reinforcement. or is this way off bass (pun) as far as the reasoning behind corner loading of sub? thnks
  20. p.s., what I really need is a new house/room layout so I could use the cornwalls for fronts. or even the ultimate dream of khorns in front & cornwalls in rear. (is that why u want my cornwalls steve?
  21. rob, are your kg's dipoles (excuse my ignorance but i have a big klipsch knowledge gap between cornwalls & today )? yea THX seems to recommend using dipoles for all surrounds for that HT surround effect. but recording studios seem to go w/ the 4 direct speakers for music (rears in back corners). guess i'm looking for the best of all worlds w/ the denon 4800/5800/or 3801(steve) & w/ my smallish room using the rear cornwalls for both. but w/ my growing a/v love, sure i'll probably end up w/ 2 sets of dipoles in addition to the corns to satisfy THX for HT, as well as a denon w/ at least 6.1 discrete. (is this some conspiracy to get us to buy more stuff until/if the tech stocks ever go back up, for now i better just a+b the cornwall rears for music & pick up the rs-7(maybe) for HT. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  22. i agree to a degree. i asked if klipsch had a b2b system & no reply. why not expand on this for a b2c - direct internet sales at least to those areas w/ no coverage. eliminates the middle man, same shipping costs. would get those complacent/slow moving dealers to adopt the b2c concept. maybe the computing/system costs has to go down further 1st. or more small dealers need to go under. but klipsch has it for promedia already. would be an expansion of that. klipsch speaks rule - klipsch don't be so afraid of hurting the small dealers' feelings.
  23. hey steve, sorry my eyes were too big i think for now i'll go the A+B route w/ the sony &, if they sound good, get the rs-7 & put em on top of the corns (hey they make great stands too ) then get the rf-7or5 & rc-7 for front. but i'm sure it's only a matter of time til I become a denon man. and the green goes on (out the door)... ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
