  1. That one did get good reviews at AK. Good luck with yours!
  2. I'm working on one now. A small one ( 1 3/16" square, 5 volt DC) that mounts under chassis and makes use of an "unused" 6 volt tap pilot light tap. Probably not as "plug 'n play" as you are looking for.
  3. You can still go a long way on less money with an old console amp. The Magnavoxes are one hell of a lot of fun for under a hundred. With efficient loudspeakers, anything is possible. I still have one rig set up to run a pair of mono Newcombs at 12 watts each and they produce fantastic music reproduction. Here's a $65 cutie that can't be beat.
  4. Cool! I didn't have my HWOs when I had the 730, so I'll never know what it would have sounded like with them. If I ever do find one again, I'll give it a go. Glad you got one, here's hoping it serves you for years to come.
  5. I picked up a 730 recently for $13, replaced the lights and cleaned it up. Sold it to a co-worker for $35. These things do show up in the thrifts, persistence pays off. BTW, what is the fascination with the twin powered receivers here at Klipsch? MIne sounded good, looked okay, but wasn't what I would would consider spectacular. What gives?
  6. Here's my office tube set up. A Magnavox 6V6GT, Foreplay II, Sony Playstation SCPH 1001, homebrew ICs (magnet wire in teflon tubing), all routed through the HWOs.
  7. I couldn't be more more pleased with today's "vinyl thrift finds": Time Changes CS8927 (stereo) Time Further Out CL1690 (6 eye mono) Gone with the Wind CL1347 (6 eye mono) Used but not scratched for $3 total. Can you say happy?
  8. Nah DD, just another ol' 6V6 PP. But, I do have that EL84 SET to refurb and that would do nicely as well, I feel certain.
  9. Someday, I am going to be up yer way again and you, Sir, I plan to meet in person and discuss audio over a beverage or 2! I'll let you know how this sounds when I get it set up.
  10. While I have enjoyed the Sonic T amp with the HWOs, it's time to drag out the Magnavox and use the Foreplay II with it instead. Pics (good quality and bad) are here: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/cruisaire/album?.dir=e563&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/cruisaire/my_photos%3furlhint=actn,del%253as,1%253af,0
  11. Thebes? I consider that quite a compliment! Thank you Sir. Your location is South Miss? Mississippi? Where exactly are you? I hail from d'Iberville myself.
  12. Case in point, http://cgi.ebay.com/KLIPSCH-HERSEY-HI-FI-LOUDSPEAKERS-70s_W0QQitemZ5842425281QQcategoryZ50597QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I am in no way connected with this auction.
  13. Superb find!! Just another example of the the "hit thrift stores/charities where old people retire in droves" theory. They had the stuff, enjoyed it, now it's your turn all these years later. You did very well.
  14. Yes, that is a 38 cent, thrift store purchase stamped "Philippine Mahogany" tray. Pretty, huh? Oh the things we can recycle when we have a chance.
  15. Michael, you guys are killing me!! I'm sitting here listening to Fleetwood Mac "Fleetwood Mac" and slowly imagining all my funds departing with the fade out of each song. Here's the Sonic T I mentioned in her new clothes.
  16. Thanks! Yes, the SCPH 1001 is an excellent sounding cdp. Please don't misunderstand, it isn't a "high end" equivalent and I don't think it ever will be. Rather, it is a low cost alternative cd source with incredible reproduction from such a simple video game device. If you ever come across one for little or nothing in cost, pick it up and give it a try.
  17. Hazing.....that brings a smile to my face remembering the early 80s and all those youthful misadventures! I hope you guys don't make me try to smoke a tampon again!! I'll try later to post a pic of a recently reworked, recased Sonic Impact amp that I had handy to set up for Heresy intro. Rehoused in a mahogany tray turned upside down, 38 cents from a thrift I think. I'm a low buck, low budget guy so the source is a first generation Playstation (SCPH 1001) that blows the doors off any CDP (even if it does look cheesy in the rack) that I could otherwise afford. Next, I'll try one of several mono and stereo 6V6 PP amps with a Foreplay II pre and see how it all sounds.
  18. Thanks Gents (and Gal)! Okay, here goes. While I have a few years under my belt at AA, AK, and other audio sites, I was only a penniless lurker here. Destined to be Klipsch-less given my fondness for used McIntosh (mostly funded by thrift store "turns") and paying the dreaded "family man bills". Then last January my boss asked me the all important question, "What would you buy for yourself if money were not an issue?". The word "Klipsch" sprang forth before I knew it. LaScalas were the target. "Have a good year and a pair might come your way, young man." Now, our company year wasn't as good as it could have been. But the Big Guy remembered "Klipsch" and asked me again last week about what we might be able to do. I visited the usual auction web site and was amused at the condition and prices that the Heresy is commanding these days. Armed with the knowledge, I visited "Don Corleone". He smiled at the cost (under $500 for the pair) and said yes. Now things got tricky because I had to find a pair that were worthy of "a gift to me" from the Boss. I visited A'gon and found these lovelies in North Carolina. The seller is a dealer in 2-channel systems and he said he had taken them as a trade-in from the original owner. The catch was shipping. He knew enough not to ship them and have 'em busted up. I was too cheap to pay for freight charges (hell, I do own a pickup!). Okay, 420 miles each way ain't that bad. I've been doing that every third weekend since Katrina hit rebuilding my folks house in Biloxi. Saturday morning, 4:15 and I'm awake before the alarm goes off and stirs the already "audio-annoyed" Mrs. from her slumber. My severe sinus attack is pounding in my head, but I'm on a mission. Gas up the truck, 32 ounces of black coffee, and more than one antihistamine and we're good to go. A cop at the gas station had just investigated a drunk driver crash a couple of miles or so away and said the driver was missing part of his skull (he said you could see his brain) and he had still run from the police (until he passed out). Geesh! Six and a half hours later (and more than a few cough drops and more black coffee) and I pull into the driveway and spot the Heresy's sitting there on a table. I instantly knew why I made the drive and those sinuses quit bothering me. I walk into the listening room (a windowless, echo-free oasis) at Serious Hi-Fi and after I finish staring at the interior and listening to the sounds, I could only utter, "I'm here for the Klipsch". Dale was cool and helped me load them inside my little pick-up (ride in the bed? I think not!). Back to Hotlanta with one behind the seat and my arm resting on the other. Brubeck? I liked him before I tasted tubes. REALLY like him now. "Indiana" from Jazz: Red, Hot, and Cool.
  19. After a 13 hour roundtrip to ensure they weren't beat up by the Oops or Fed Lax gorillas, I have the pleasure of owning HWO 153Y748 and 49 (Thanks Joe and Dale!). My first Klipsch. Nice loudspeakers indeed and I'm enjoying Mr. Brubeck et al through them now.
