  1. Thanks for the quick replies and pointers.... I'm headed off to Ebay in a few minutes to see what I can find. I'll also see if I can find some reference to anyone who makes or has plans for Large Advent crossovers. By the by, when I noted that the speakers and crossovers were "long gone," I meant gone... the boxes are empty.... That's why I asked about "reverse engineering." Thanks again for the feedback, Dave in Nashville
  2. It's been a long time since I've been on the forum.... I've been distracted with a new job, getting a child through with college, and fighting with sciatica. That being said, I need some advice from folks who are more familiar with the "audio" field than I am. Recently, I picked up a pair of large Advent speaker cabinets for free. The speakers and crossovers are long gone, but the boxes are in reasonably good condition. Remembering how impressive these speakers sounded back in the early 1970's, is there any way to "reverse engineer" these enclosures so I can find out which speakers and crossovers to use? Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Dave in Nashville
  3. After putting my cat in the car so its ears won't bleed and shooting earplugs in my own for the same reason, my setup will peg out a Radioshack SPL meter at 126db. And that's not full volume. I really don't have any idea how far it will go above 126...... All I know is that it gets loud enough...... Dave in Nashville
  4. CustomSteve, Looks a whole lot cleaner and more efficient than the old one.... However, you didn't comment on how your repair job sounded. Dave in Nashville
  5. Sky, I am a big fan of Al Klappenberger. In addition to providing a first class replacement for LaScala crossovers, he also discovered white bread, knew about the internet long before Al Gore, and may have walked on the moon months before Neil Armstrong. Spend your money wisely. However, you should get in touch with Al at http://www.alkeng.com/ and find out what he has to offer. Even his lowest price crossover will sound better than you can imagine! Here is a photo of one of his crossovers installed in my right speaker. Replacing those old damaged AA's was one of the smartest things I ever did........ Dave in Nashville
  6. Found'em at a place in Denver. Thanks to all. Dave in Nashville
  7. Forum members, Found'em at a place in Denver. Thanks for all, Dave in Nashville
  8. My system isn't as polished/attractive as yours, but like some of the other posters have noted, it will flat chase you out of the room if you turn it up too loud. Using the ear protection that I normally use at the pistol range and a SPL meter bought at Radio Shack, my son and I cranked up the system until the meter "pegged." The meter was placed roughly four feet from my left LaScala. I tried the right speaker with the same result. The volume control still had some room to go! My son and I then opened the door to the house, walked across the yard and crossed the street. Roughly 80 feet from the front door, the sound quality was crystal clear with no distortion at all. I was worried about the subwoofer, so we put our hearing protection back on and turned the volume down. Several neighbors commented later that Dire Straits had never sounded so good. As I read on the forum long ago, you know its too loud when your ears start to bleed and your vision starts to blur.... Enjoy your hearing while you got it! Dave in Nashville
  9. I also have a pair of KG4's that I use as my left and right surrounds. They were my first Klipsch speakers and I got them long ago (and I mean a lot of years) at a pawn shop for $300. Since then, I've added additional speakers to my "Frankenstein set up." If you can get your speakers up and running, you won't be disappointed with the sound. I'm not sure how long ago they were discontinued by Klipsch. but you should try contacting Trey Cannon (he's a regular on the forum and is a pretty sharp guy) for some ideas. Good luck! Dave in Nashville
  10. Hey r2473, Get the darned speakers, throw away the internal amps, consider getting some ALK crossovers, and then enjoy the music! Here's a photo of my '77 LaScalas. Enjoy! Dave in Nashville
  11. Hey RJR, Here's a diagram that answers your question. You should put some serious thought into getting some ALK crossovers for your LaScalas.... They'll really make your speakers sing! Dave In Nashville
  12. I also rebuilt a pair of LaScala's. Had to rebuild both tweeters and one of the mid-range drivers. As part of the rebuild, I put in ALK crossovers. In doing so, I tossed the striped lamp cord and put in Monster Cable instead. Enjoy dem speakers! Dave in Nashville
  13. Dear Pilgrim, If you want to make yourself crazy figuring out a way to build your own enclosures (first, you had better be an exceptionally good carpenter with plenty of work space!), go to the US Patent Office website below.... http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm and put in the following patent numbers: 2,310,243 2,731,101 2,323,682 4,138,594 2,537,141 4,210,223 To save time, you can also use "advanced search." In the query box, type in "IN/Klipsch" --- be sure to leave off the quotation marks and select "1790 to present" for the years to search. Or, you can regain your sanity and do as I did... Start saving your money now and keep your eyes and ears open for bargains..... Dave in Nashville
  14. I know this topic has probably been discussed in the Klipsch Forum, but I'm looking for some "current" advice. I have a substantial amount of music stored in my computer and would like to know what technology forum readers are using that allows them to play music over their home audio systems. One of the brilliant people I work with suggested that I try burning the songs onto a CD and then carry it across the room and and insert it in the CD player..... thanks Steve, I'll keep that in mind ..... Currently, my computer and A/V receiver are about 25 feet apart and separated by a high traffic area. My house has a crawl space so I can run wires if necessary. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. Dave in Nashville
  15. Go to the patient office search page at http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm then enter 55535 and when the screen appears, click "Images." This has absolutely nothing to do with speakers, but having one might be a good conversation piece........ Have a good week!
  16. I also have a set of early Heresy speakers and am considering a crossover upgrade. First, I'm going to do the basic capacitor replacement myself, However, after reading all the posts on the forum, it sure looks like Bob Crites has a good product. If my work doesn't sound right, I'll probably buy a set from him. FYI, I don't think Al Klappenberger makes a Heresy crossover. Good luck and good listening! Dave in Nashville
  17. Daddy Dee, I took your advice and sent Bob Crites an email request for help. Hey DizRotus, Those photos are unreal. The units that came with my LaScalas never even came close to looking that bad and I ended up finally buying new crossovers. ... Your installation looks top notch. I noticed that your new caps resemble the ones I want to replace more than those I can get from Parts Express. What brand are your new capicators? Dave In Nashville
  18. Not being one to heed the adage, If it aint broke, dont fix it, Ive decided to replace the capacitors in my Type E Heresy crossovers. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I would like to know how closely the values of the new capacitors need to match those of the old ones (2.0 microfarads, 200 volts). On Parts Express, Ive found two brands of polypropylene caps that match exactly Kimber Kap and Audio Cap which I can get for roughly $9-15 each. Although I know which end of a soldering iron not to grab, any words of caution or advise/recommendation anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Dave In Nashville
  19. I prefer to use Bablefish.altavista when I translate into different languages. (Prefiero utilizar Babelfish.altavista cuando traduzco a diversas idiomas) http://babelfish.altavista.com/ Enjoy!
  20. Pierre, J'ai acheté deux filtres d'ALK pour ma La Scalas il y a plusieurs années et je suis très heureux avec le nouveau bruit. La qualité et l'exécution des filtres est excellente ! Bonne chance ! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (I purchased two ALK filters for my La Scalas several years ago and am very pleased with the new sound. The quality and workmanship of the filters is excellent!) Dave in Nashville
  21. I tried rebuilding a set of large Advent speakers a few years ago and tried like crazy to get in touch with this guy so I could check out the large woofers he claimed to have. I ended up getting the parts from some one else because after repeated attempts I never got a response. Maybe I should have put a note on his front door........ If you want to see a photo of the house at his mailing address follow this link to the Nashville Property Assessor's office (public records): http://www.padctn.com/ Click on "webpro" and type the street address in the search area.
