  1. I am looking for a flea watt powered amp to try in my tri amped system, it will only be driving the two BMS 16 ohm drivers so power is not an  issue. I been listening to my Korneff 45 for years and love it but, I am 63 now and I don't want to pay $600 to replace the EML tubes when they are done. So I am looking for a quality sounding amp that uses cheaper tubes. I like what I have read about these two amps plus what I have read about the 71a tube amps... So contact me with pics, price, and details...

    Found no longer looking thanks....

Thanks for the replies, however, let me re-phrase the inquiry:

If one has two tube amps identical in every way, except for one output transformer having a lower secondary resistance than the other, which will be abetter match for Klipschorns?

The one that sounds the best to your ears!!!

The vintage  Klipschhorn  takes more power than some think.  This is due to the fact that ( 1 ) it has a more parts-intensive and complex three way crossover to drive ( with attendant losses ) and ( 2 ) has less than state of the art wiring, crossover to drivers, hence a lower signal transfer efficiency.

Low power tube amps, in the one to three Watts range, ( which can be the best sounding of all tube amps available ) will not drive the speaker as needed in demanding playback situations.  I find as tube amps increase in power, typically over about two Watts, you are trading off the ultimate in SQ ( sound quality ) for that amp's extra power.

It is " the " age-old audio dilemma.

Consider carefully all possibilities, all combinations,  and make wise choices for yourself.   Amps, not speakers, are the real problem in audio, given a good source you want to play back, intact as recorded .

According to this statement, is the reason I went full active. Now I have the best of both worlds SET and SS running my highly modded Khorns....

I totally understand what you are saying, and fully believe you.

All my amplifier 45 experience and comments are referring to the vintage ST Type 45s, NOS or used tested-strong.  I don't like them in an optimized amplifier.

Re: your use of Emission Labs Tubes :  The EML 45 version is a horse of a different color.

    An " EML 45 "  is EML's own re-make,  at a premium charge -  and it is not like a usual vintage ST45 !!!   How much in cost, per tube today $250?  $350 ?  $400 ? $500 ?  Does anyone know?????

Last time I checked they were $600 for s pair of the solid plates...

I have heard R2R tapes from The Tape Project before (though not on my own system).  You are right.  They are spectacular!  I would love to get some for myself one day.  At the moment, my only tape deck is a 7" unit, and it is not working 100%.  Even still, commercially-recorded 7.5 IPS tapes can sound quite nice.

I agree I have some of those 7.5ips tapes and some are pretty good but, not in the same league as a master tape or copy... Get yourself a Otari MX 5050 to start with, they can be had for a reasonable price and sound great once setup correctly.

I buy 6j5gt tubes often. One day I'll make a preamp with 6j5 insteadof 6sn7 preamp. There are lots of 6sn7 schematics out there.

Ok great I am curious where do you buy your 6j5 tubes from? I use an adapter with my 6j5 tubes in my pre amp and also with the 6F8G tubes in my amp, works and sounds fantastic!!!

  7. Hey Seti,

Glad to see someone running the 6J5GT tubes. I been running them for a couple years now as a replacement for the 6SN7 tubes in my pre amp. I also run the 6F8G tubes in my amp as drivers for the 45 tubes in my Korneff amp. I would love to talk with you more about the 6J5 tubes...

@jcmusic thanks for sharing, and nice tape machines! I think I’ll eventually be putting a bit of absorption on the ceiling and first reflection point!

Is there a measurable difference between closed backs and false corners?

And speaking of cabinet influences, are the top and side panels of the top hats relevant to the directivity or tonality of the mid and high end?

Yes the treatment will do wonders for the sound in a small room, as for the difference between closed in backs and false corners I can not speak. I have never had the false corners...

  9. I have had a 300B amp and a 2A3 amp and both were really nice sounding amps, when I got my 45 amp everything changed the amp journey was over and still is. My Korneff 45 amp sounds better than any other amp I have ever heard in my system and that's why it stays!!!

  10. My advice is to completely enclose the backs of khorns, then you will be able to adjust them toe in/out as you like. My khorns are in a small room almost the same size as yours and with room treatment and some EQ and closed backs they sound fantastic!!!

Hey all, I’m very excited to have just purchased a used set of Khorns. Stock 77 raw birch that was finished by someone along the line. They are in good working order, really happy with the what they can do so far. The only thing I’m still sorting out is how to get the the tops to throw further back into the room. As of now I’m really only getting the imaging I’m looking for about 6 ft or so from the front wall. I’d really like to sit back at least 10 ft or so.

They sit along a 13’ wall. The room length is 14’.  In my music production work I typically set up near fields in an equilateral triangle and try to sit directly inside it, usually along the front wall of a room. I treat the front wall, first reflections and have a cloud on the ceiling.

This set up is no that of course. My goal is to listen on the Khorns in a less analytic way and more visceral way, but I have missed the image I usually get from being in that triangle.

I have pretty good corners for the low end section but I’ve been experimenting with twisting the tops out a bit, which seems to help, but I would like to keep full Khorn angled together. Im thinking false corners in perfectly good corners seems like a bit much, but I’m wondering if I could build one half for the front wall that essentially tilts the corner outward reducing the overall angle to 75 or 80 degrees...anyone have any experience with that?I’ll keep experimenting but any insight appreciated!
