Quadrophonic was a blip on the radar for a while. It was no surprise to me that it didn't last. Quad recordings either had instruments coming from all around, or there was a conventional stereo presentation that would spin around the room at random times. Quad had a lot of potential but the record companies turned it into a gimmick.

Agreed, I was in the army stationed in Hong Kong at the time of quads introduction, it was a must have thing amongst us squaddies.

Yea we know you can't just split turntable rca's. We would do it witha CD player. I love listening to sacd's and dvd-audio's, but like you said, not enough content out there

I don't believe that you need a "quad" turntable, just a compatible cartridge/stylus, the four channels are derived from a demodulator fed a stereo signal. The qx-949 actually has the demodulator built in to it, some other receivers required a separate unit.

  3. Thanks for pointing that out about the "contour" switch HDBR, I have always felt that it operated differently, and that there was a good reason for it not being labeled "loudness" as every other manufacturer does. It would be interesting to know what the technical differences are.

  4.  Hi dtel, I may now get my HK 630 in for surgery after this experience. I don't try to over analyze what it is I am hearing, but I have a pretty good reference point to go back to, in as much that I also have a Marantz 2240, it has a very similar sound to the 2245 before the over-haul, and I often tried to compare them, the 2245 did have a slightly tubbier sound, but nothing really stood out 'tween the two of them....But now in comparison the newly re-furbished 2245 is a night & day difference, detailed, tight and punchy...and a superior sound-stage. One thing that surprised me was the new electrolytic caps, tiny little things in comparison to the originals, but I guess cap technology has moved on in forty yrs +.

  5. I was really torn about whether to have it repaired or not, there are a lot of people who debate the vintage vs modern argument, but as is usual in audio circles no consensus is ever formed. I really didn't know what to expect, and was ready to except the fact I could be throwing my money away. For me this was a winner.

  6. A couple of years ago my Marantz 2245 decided to give up after 40+ years of good service, now after giving a few modern alternatives a whirl the Marantz is back from major surgery...The difference is startling, to the point even my wife made commentary on the sound. The best $350 I  have spent. It's also nice to once again have the blue lights and champagne face plate to look at....:D

  8. After years of abuse and neglect on my deck I gave my trusty old Pioneer pl530 a facelift and new Cartridge/Stylus. It's now finished in Cherry veneer, and sporting a pickering V15 and Stanton 681eee Stylus

  9. Anybody here with moon photography tips? My photos never compare to the real thing. :)

JL, take your exposure reading from only the moon itself, don't use an average meter reading, turn your camera to spot metering. You will find the settings will be somewhere around 1/500th at f8...ISO 100. Basically a day light setting in the sun, as that is what the moon is being lit by. This setting will give you detail in the lunar surface without being blown-out. I prefer to still have some light in the sky, so shoot not too long after sunset when possible..........

.post-18926-0-02540000-1453603427_thumb.j...................Hoping I'm on the right the track, and not the same one as oldtimer..... :)

  10. Well as I have both RF5 and RB75, I would say that sonically there is little to distinguish them. I feel the RF5 is a better speaker in the bass dept, but the difference is negligible. Feed either one of them with lots of good quality power (120wpc Luxman) and either speaker shine. I don't know which of them has the upper hand when it comes to the official specs, but in practice either would keep you happy until you got the RF7.
