  1. Speaking of Lynyrd Skynyrd, check out this pic.

I was at this "homecoming" concert in Jacksonville early or mid 70's I think.
My friend took this picture of Allen Collins & Ronnie VanZant.
The band had just come home after a very long tour and this concert was one of the biggest events ever for our hometown boys.
Before the concert, the Jacksonville mayor presented Ronnie with the "key to the city" you see hanging around his neck.
Also note Ronnie's tee shirt. It says "Who the F... are the Rolling Stones anyway". They did have an attitude about them.

The Charlie Daniels band was the opening act - awesome.
Skynyrd came out and did one song and after the song Ronnie walked off stage.
He had damaged his vocal chords while on tour and he thought he sounded like Donald Duck (I didn't really notice).
They gave him a shot or something back stage and he came back out.
He got half-way thru the second song, kicked his microphone & stand over & walked off stage again, not to return.

Charlie Daniels came out to fill in for Ronnie and joined the rest of Skynyrd and they did a 15-20 minute rendition of Free Bird.
After that they gave a brief explanation of Ronnies condition, apologized and left the stage.

Well, at that point the crowd started getting very rowdy and angry.
That's when we quickly decided to leave.
We heard on the news later that the crowd turned into a huge riot and destroyed all of Skynyrd's equipment on stage.
I don't recall anyone getting seriously hurt, but there were numerous arrests.

The next morning in a rock radio station interview Ronnie expressed his anger and disappoinment in his fans here for what they had done.
He said he was renouncing Jacksonville as his home and claimed that he had flushed the key to the city down the toilet.
I doubt that that key actually would have flushed, but he probably tied anyway.

I got a cool picture out of it anyway.

  2. A couple of weeks ago
OldBuckster recommended Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Street Survivors album.

I was going to respond to
that then, but didn’t get around to it.

    I totally agree that Street
Survivors is a great album, but Skynyrd’s best?
I’m not so sure about that.

    I love Skynyrd, (our home
town band) and all of their albums, each one has at least something I
absolutely love on it. (I’m not counting any of the post Ronnie VanZant albums
    by the “tribute band”.)

    In the same category of
southern rock music, I am recommending 38 Specials first album (self-titled).

    Little brother Donnie
VanZant had a smoother voice than Ronnie and this band just sounded great
together. (They had 2 drummers that synced very nicely together). Every song on
this album is great. How often do you see that?

    I particularly like the
songs “Fly Away” and “Just Wanna Rock & Roll”.

Oh, and it is awesomely well
    recorded (late 70’s I think).

Check it out. I have it on
both vinyl and cd. Both sound great.

P.S. OldBuck : I agree with what you said about Artimus
Pyle. He was Skynyrd’s best drummer. I don’t want to say anything bad about
him, but he has been in the local news here a couple of times in the past year.
It’s really sad, and a shame what some these guys that we so loved so much turn
    out to be.

  3. I have a chance to pick up a 1995 BMW 525i with 101K ($5500 or so) and in nice shape but I am reluctant to do so because of the fear of the maintenance costs. BMW does make gorgeous driving machines but the little Honda's are tough to beat. Maybe I'll get a Acura CL instead since it has a little more prestige.

A guy at work is selling a '96 Accord EX from Georgia (no rust) with only 85K and well cared for which I know I can get another 5 years out of minimum with proper upkeep for like $4250. Decisions, decisions.

Go with the Acura or the Accord, BMW's are one of the most expensive cars there are to maintain & repair.

If anyone wants to ask me any car related questions off forum, there is both an email link & a website link in my profile.

  4. With apologies to thread starter:

Mr tech, my landcruiser is approaching 125k. Anything I should be watchful of?

Arky, the Landcruiser has always been an excellent vehicle. Very rugged, sturdy & reliable.

It's life expectancy can be well over 200k miles.

As with all vehicles, regular maintenance (particularly oil changes) will determine the longevity of the vehicle.
PS. For more info on this check out this article I wrote for my website:
    http://www.certifiedautorepair.com/Rant%2011-07-03.html

As far as your Landcruiser @125k it would depend on what has been done on it thus far.

As long as your are following your maintenance schedule you should be fine.

Most manufacturers have a 30/60/90k type schedule, with oil changes in between, and after 90k it just repeats.

From experience, radiator replacements are pretty common at your mileage if it hasn't been done already.

  5. Well they're not terribly fast or sexy, but I'm a practical kind of guy and Honda Accord fits me nicely. I always buy new and from the same salesman at the same dealership. I get all my maintenance there and they take good care of me. My mechanic knows me by name. They're cheap to keep, get great mileage, good resale price even after many miles. I get the manual transmission though, so I can pretend I'm driving a sports car.

My history is that a new Accord lasts me 10 years or 200,000 miles, whichever comes first. I buy em new, follow the recommended maintenance instructions, and only once have been stranded (when I lost an alternator on the '85). Then I sell it myself, and haggle over price on the new one.

Last time it took me exactly 2 minutes to buy a car. To salesman Jerry - 'Accord EX- what colors does it come in?' ... 'fine, I'll take the blue one (whips out checkbook)'. Jerry says 'great, I'll have a manual shipped up here for you, it'll be here Tuesday, lets do lunch'. That was about it.

The Audi looks nice, but isn't maintenance costly?

Colterphoto has the best advice I've read here yet.

I am an ASE Certified Master Tech and have owned my own auto repair business for 30 years.

We always recommend either Honda or Toyota to our customers for the best value & reliabilty.

We work on all cars, but my techs would cringe if an Audi pulled in, and yes, they are generally high maintenance cars.

  6. I just got a Harmony 1000 (color touch screen) for Christmas.

Very user friendly, very easy to set up.

It controls all my devices just fine, even a DishNetwork HD DVR unit.

I believe it will control almost anything. It can learn commands from other remotes also.

So far, I love it. There's a bit of a learning curve to the touch screen as opposed to buttons, but I'm already getting used to that.

It retails for $500, but I believe Amazon is selling them for $300.

  7. I just wish I would've known about that kind of wire about a year ago when a had a porcelin tile floor layed.

The ghost wiring is also designed to run along above, or behind baseboards. It has a peel off sticky back (the pink side) and the front side is designed for painting. You could remove the baseboards (at least partially) and put in behind the boards.

    Marshall,

Where is this "ghost wire" available from ?

    Thanks,
    Wade

  8. Wade,

After seeing your outstanding workmanship I finally decided to go ahead and build false coreners for my Khorns. My project is not even half-finished yet as I still need to build the top sections. Here is picture of mine, with a slight deviation from yours:

    Kudret

I actually like your idea of the flat tail-board back verses the pointed back that mine have better.

I probably would have gone that way if I would've thought of it before I was knee deep in the project.

I just kinda had a vision in my head as to how I wanted mine to look and then engineered them on the fly.

It looks like your doing a great job. Please keep us informed of your progress along with pics.

  9. I would like to introduce my friend Mitja Borko from Slovenia.

Some of you may already be familiar with his, now famous, Klipsch Cornwall Test Report. It has

been published and referenced for many years on the internet.

I sold Mitja my 1974 Cornwall Is a number of years ago and shipped them to him in Slovenia.

Since that time, he and I have been great email friends,

although we have not yet met in person.

He has been browsing the Klipsch forum here from time to time and he tells me that he has just joined as a member.

I'm sure he will be a valuable contributor to the forum due to his vast knowledge of Klipsch and all things audio.

Mitja has just created a website that has several test

reports on various loudspeakers, amps & pre-amps, phono pre-amps,

    cartridges and vintage tube radios.

The website also includes his Klipsch Cornwall Test Report.

    http://mitjaborko.googlepages.com/home

His classic closing statement of the Cornwall Test Report:

    "Finally, I would like

to tell you that I do not dance and I do not say "Yes, yes ." very

often, I do not conduct an orchestra either.

    But Klipsch Cornwalls

encourage me to do all these. Day by day. They put me into complete harmony

    with the music.

    They make me happy.

    And this report? Is it

    an Ode to the Legend?

    Yes it is, it

    certainly is.

    - Mitja Borko

  10. My wife & I just saw Trans-Siberian Orchestra last night for the first time.

What a totally awesome show !!!

The lights, lasers & pyrotechnics were blinding, and the sound was deafeningly loud. What more could you ask for?

Oh yeah, the performance was totally excellent in all respects too.

    Highly recommended !

  11. Thanks much for all the great comments & kudos guys, I really appreciate it.

Indy said: "If only this was a kit... finished in the Klipsch stains too.. That
way, you solve the big two issues with any K horn owner...... "

I would seriously consider something like that except for one thing, I really do not like woodworking.

I'm just a nuts & bolts kinda car guy.

This project was truly a labor of love.

    Thanks again

  12. Wade that is as good a job as I have seen any where, excellent workmanship. My question is the same as boom3, how does the bass sound compared to real conners?

    Jay

    Boom3 & Canyonman,

I wish I could answer your question, but I have never had these in real corners, only as they are now.

I have often wondered the same thing myself, though. I've even wondered if the actual wall construction of a real corner could influence the sound to any noticeable degree. Such as brick verses sheet rock, etc.

My guess is that there is little or no discernable difference in corners, false or real. The overall room acoustics probably play a larger role.

Thanks, to everyone, for all the great remarks.
