  1. Ok, i finally got the chance to watch the DVD. Some parts were absolutely fantastic, others, (well I have been a PF fan since I first heard Interstellar Overdrive in 1967 back when KMPX in San Francisco was still underground only broadcasting late Sunday nights.) It was different to hear the improvisation in places and I wasn't really impressed with the audio track, not at all what a live concert is all about IMHO. infact I thought the encore was a better mix than the first part of disc two. I will say I was really surprised during Great Gig in the Sky, I didn't think a white girl could sing like that, one hell of a set of .. er.. lungs [] To me the midrange wasn't there, but then I was not listening to my Khorns but I know what to expect from my Paradigms just my two cents Jack
  2. Set12, Thanks for the education. Years ago I did some electronics, but you know the old saying if you don't use it you lose it. I still do a little now and then on my Ionovacs. I'll have to check out my Dynaco ST70 I recently picked up (uses EL34's) Actually I am thinking about sending it to Craig at NOS Valves for a complete rebuild. I also have a Mac 240 that uses 6L6's humm..... Jack
  3. Please excuse my ignorance here, but is it wise to put in a tube that has more power dissipation capability in a unit that say was designed for less output power ie, current draw, output transformer, like in the above example, replacing an el34 with a kt88? Just asking because I am curious
  4. I use a mac MC150, has 150 per channel, I have seen the meters approach 15. Being a Mac guy, any of the SS macs that have autoformers should fair well
  5. Mine was I had 2 pairs of Magenapan, 1.6's and 2.7's I was running them with 4 strapped (mono) Mac MC2100's, it sounded great. I had a MC352 fall into my lap. Much newer, much better specs sounded good but seemed to not quite have enough drive so I bought a second MC352 and ran them in mono for 700wpc. Much to my surprise, altho it sounded absolutely wonderful it was too clean. I eventually went back to the 2100's, then we moved and the mags just didn't fit the house so I sold it all... Now I have the room that the maggies would love but I no longer have the maggies. go figure Being a Mac fanatic since 1967 when I bought my first MC240, and then I don't remember how many SS macs since, there is definately a difference in sound between the ss macs that have autoformers and those that don't. Ones that don't are the 1700, 1900, 6100,6200, the 3 digit ones like the 721 (I think) and the 71xx and there are others. To my ears the difference is night and day, the autoformer adds a smoothness to the sound, more tube-like than the non autoformer units
  6. Personally I ripped all my cd's in wav, all 1232 of them for a whopping 620gb. In my opinion there is a reason why cd's are produced in wav, so i keep it that way. I have a wired touchscreen and 2 viewsonic airpanels (wireless) so that I can access my music from my chair (as well as my automation system)
  7. Jay, RDP is free too, well it comes with XP (rdp=remote desktop protocol) The Mainlobby suite I am referencing here is www.cinemaronline.com. you would need at least the MLServer (server and comes with 5 clients) and Musiclobby. Musiclobby is a plugin that talks to J River Media Center (so you need that too) I believe Mainlobby is like $200, Music lobby is $60 and J River is $40. Then any PC with sound card. I think I built my monster pc for about $1800 (3.4ghz, 4 gigs ram, 8 250gb HD, 10 channel sound card) Keep in mind Mainlobby is a complete design tool for creating custom screen layouts (comes with a real nice prepackaged layout) and with Musiclobby there is no screen design needed since it comes with one. but be sure to check out the other products addons as well, then you will see the big picture of what mainlobby can do By the way I am not affiliated with Cinemar, I just use their product. I had looked at commercial music servers and what I was able to put together has the features and capacity of the servers out there costing several times as much
  8. Why didn't you at least use RDP? Netmeeting would be terrible at best. The Cinemar mlserver allows individual clients(the server comes with 5 clients, more can be purchased) over wired and wireless connections. Each client can be running a different task within mainlobby all accessing modules within mlserver.
  9. Could easily do that within that price range with what I suggested earlier up the thread, any computer or laptop could be a client, wired or wireless PLUS you have the infrastructure in place for future HTPC and or Home automation
  10. Oldbuckster, well did you get the Khorns? come on you know you want em []
  11. Sorry can't answer that, haven't tried. The quality seems superb. It is touted as one of the best for home studio use. All the online musical instrument sites carry them
  12. Garth, In a nutshell I am very impressed but I have built a little love/hate relationship, not with the Khorns but with the quality of some recordings. With the Paradigms and even the Belles (and my maggies before this) poor recordings sounded bad but tolerable. With the Khorns poor recordings are unbearable. I have played around a bit adding a little Ionovac, adding a little sub but mainly just getting to know what to expect. Fortunately I am in the position that volume level is not an issue so I have been able to listen softly and loudly Dtel, Yes I agree totally. That is what makes my paradigm system so sweet. I have complete timber and driver match on all 7 speakers, same line and same version. The problem with it is I am usually running it at relatively high power to fill the room. The Khorns definately have the ability to fill the room and with a horns dynamic abilities I can only imagine it would be incredible. I realize that the cornwall is not a horn load but with the same drivers, well does that kinda make sense?
  13. TigerwoodK, Look at the M-Audio line. The 1010LT has 10 in and 10 out, 8 analog and 1 digital (coaxial S/pdif I/O ) up to 24 bit width and sampling from 8k to 96k I use the digital out to feed my McIntosh Mac 3 -> McIntosh C39 -> McIntosh MC150 -> Khorns, clean as it can get
  14. Tom, I understand what you are saying, I will admit to logging close to if not over 100 hours of listening in the last 11 or is it 12 days now. My biggest push if you will is to determine how the horns will work in my 7.1 setup. As it is right now I have the theater system (all Paradigm Studio Reference and Anthem Pre-Pro) and 1.5 audio systems (meaning shared sources and preamp (McIntosh C39) with 2 discrete power amps / speaker configs) for music. If the horns will work for the theater as I think they will, i can then figure out what to do with my current theater system, which sounds good but definately giving it a good workout. I have the Belles ready to go in the rear, heresy's for the surrounds, Khorns for the front but what I am lacking is the center. I have used phantom center for DD (doesn't work for DTS) in the past and well it isn't the same. The Khorns sound great as they are for music, if the center isn't needed for music it will still be needed for HT. I need to see how the Khorns sound with the Anthem electronics compared to my Mac stuff and I do have enough Mac to use Mac amps for the 7 channels if it comes to that. So I am kinda in limbo without a center for further testing, if that makes any sense Jack
  15. Take a look at J River Media Center, with Cinemar Main Lobby/Music Lobby as the front end. Runs on a standard PC, sound card of your choice. I use a 3.4ghz 1.5 terrabyte raid 5 array with an M Audio 1010lt sound card, gives me 4 stereo analog zones and a digital zone. Software costs about $300 plus PC. Mainlobby comes out of the box supporting 5 clients (more available for purchase) and Music Lobby supports 3 zones (more available for purchase) Check out the Cinemar product at www.cinemaronline.com Jack
  16. I am reviving this thread, living with my new Khorns a mere 11 days, I want to add a center channel. Previous posts suggest a minimum of a Cornwall. Not knowing anything about a Cornwall, am I correct that it uses a K33, K55 and K77? Which model horn does it use? and can anyone supply me with cabinet dimensions and or cabinet plans? From the few pictures I have seen the cabinet does not look complicated. Also what model crossover do they use. Thanks! Jack
  17. Audible, we are in the same boat (or should I say luxury liner) When I wanted Klipschorns, I said well maybe we could sell the Belles, my wife looked at me and said "I don't think so" A couple years ago I unloaded a bunch of Mac (I hate having something sitting and not being used) she told me I had to keep one of each and would not let me sell my 5 MC50's (SS monoblocks). At that time I had 4 MC250's and 4 MC2100's, I now have one of each. She lets me have whatever I want as long as we can afford it and enjoys it along with me
  18. Looks like the auction was yanked [] Seller ended the auction early, the sad part is my stepson works in Napa, Ca and was willing to ship it to me (the 67, not the 61) but they are both gone. I have never seen a Cornwall but the box looked really simple to duplicate. What horn was used in the cornwall? From what I can tell it used a K33, K55 driver and K77 tweeter, am I correct on this?
  19. I had looked at the Meda Bravo Line, but when I found out that really all you needed was this $39 software (J River Media Center) and a dedicated PC, it really made sense because I could build the features into the PC that I wanted. A few tips. 1) Good quality sound card 2) Hard drive redundancy in case of hard drive failure. Raid 5 is the best way to go. it requires an addon raid 5 card and multiple hard drives. My system has 5 stereo output zones (4 analog, 1 digital) each zone can be playing something different. I have 8 250gb Sata II hard drives for 1.35 terrabytes of storage plus a hot swap drive in place so if there is a failure it replaces the failed drive, no data lost something to look into Jack
  20. Rob, Hey glad to see the picture, I'm surprised you didn't take a picture of the phone booth you called me from before you left on horseback to find out if they arrived ok and if I was happy [] (just kidding) Marvel, Until i moved here I had never seen night sky like this. It is so spectacular. I have a couple telescopes and when the sky has no clouds, we have a nightly ritual of spending a few minutes looking. Sunburnwilly, Thanks, I am extremely proud of what I have built, both in functionality and sound. The music server is one of the best, most functional aspects of the system. Originally it was for the whole house audio system, but was such a natural for the music room too. I previously had 3 cd changers and could never find a particular track. It is of course a project in progress, Eventually I will get everything communicating the way I want Flagstaff and northern Arizona is a beautiful place, I recommend to anyone that has the chance to see it for yourself
  21. Thanks Jim! Yea lot of years of collecting, lot of time and cash, but I like it. I still have a lot of work to do integrating everything together, but well worth the time and effort! Jack
  22. Sheltie Dave, Thanks! I have almost lived in that room the past week, still have some things to try, but as it stands, life is good
