  1. Russ -- I understand completely your predicament. I, too, obsess over fidning that perfect system that plays ALL my faorite kinds of music well. It's a b*tch to find a pair of speakers that do folk well, but that can't handle rock. As far as Klipsch go, the nice thing is that you can tinker and tune the heck out of them. There's a gentleman here, Dean, who builds crossovers, and another who builds Trachorns to try on top of LaScalas, K-horns, Belles, etc... plenty you can do to "tweak" them! I just sold a pair of Fostex fullrange drivers to concentrate on making my K-horn hybrids sound better. I had a pair of LaScalas, and they were too "forward" for my taste. None of the "lush" tube sound I was looking for even though I had it with my Fostex, Velez 300B amp, and Bottlehead preamp. I picked up a pair of k-horn bass cabinets and Altec 511 horns w/drivers, and the system sounded better. I picked up a pair of Yamaha electronic crossovers, set them at 500Hz, and bi-amped with solid state on the bottom and the 300B amp on top -- much better still. Nevertheless, rock still sounds edgy when it's cranked up. Maybe it's my room, or possibly just the Altec drivers -- I am going to try some Edgar trachorns or see if I can source some different diaphragms for my Altecs. Jazz, folk, old Motown, and classical all sound great the way things are, but pop in a rock CD and the louder passages get really ringy. I would also suggest that you audition some speakers locally, unless you're like me and don't mind rolling the dice if the deal is right. Maybe watch your local craigslist listings and see what pops up. If you buy them right, you'll always get your money back out of them if they're not for you! Good luck!
  2. Thanks for the ad -- I appreciate it. I hear you re: projects... that's why I'm tossing things on eBay! Trying to consolidate and upgrade a bit here and there, all while saving some pennies for a rainy day. If you're ever down my way, please drop me a note first! Chris
  3. Gil -- I posted my corner cabinet on eBay and used the gif you posted to help illustrate that it may be a Brociner. Hope you don't mind. If so, let me know, and by all means I'll remove it from the listing, I'll probably list that crossover as well, as I have no real use for a single such unit anyway (neat as it is). I'd rather turn it into a couple bucks to help pay for my trachorn upgrades and whatnot. Thanks again!
  4. There's a Moscode 600 on audiogon, but be prepared to pay ($1300 IIRC)!!! Keep an eye on there, though. They pop up on occasion. Good luck!
  5. You beat me to it. (iBook here!) [Y]
  6. Gil -- thank YOU for doing the research for me! BTW, you got my LaScalas a few months ago, didn't you? I recently wound up with a pair of K-horn bass enclosures and am trying a few HF horns on them to see if I want to try horns again. How are the LaScalas doing?
  7. Whatever became of this? I think I have another Brociner cabinet, though the pics on this thread disappeared before I could confirm mine is the same. Wish I'd seen this sooner. I'd love to make a stereo pair!
  8. Gil -- this is VERY interesting! Thanks for posting!!! I wonder if this is the manufacturer of my crossover? It is a New York 28 address. Thanks again; this is getting interesting! BTW, I wonder what it would cost to reproduce a pair of these crossovers? They seem so simple... I don't know enough about these things to even determine what the crossover frequency would be with this design. I'd be curious to see what something like this sounds like, in stereo, on my horns. Chris
  9. Gents -- I have the homemade corner cabinet sitting on my front porch still, and could take pics if you're curious. It's not much to look at -- just big, black, and plywood. It is almost just like a K-horn cabinet but with false corners permanently attached. That's the best way to decribe it, I think. I need to look it over closer... heck, it might be a Klipsch cabinet under all that mess, but it sure looks more "home made" to me. FWIW, this came, along with two Klipschorn bass cabinets, from the estate in Decatur, IL of a music store owner. I wish I'd been at the auction -- the guy I got it all from said there were horns there, too, but another buyer got them. I'm sure they paid peanuts for it all. Oh well!
  10. Let me fill in the blanks. It was bolted to the top of a k-horn-like corner enclosure (home made) with a Jensen 15" speaker inside. The top horn was long gone by the time I got it. Interesting piece, and a curious history. Thanks for the tips so far!
  11. Good points, Boom3. RCA Labs maybe? Who else was in NY? Dukane?
  12. Did my pics make it through? I sent them last night, but with my email, actual delivery seems to be a crapshoot at times. Thanks!
  13. Thanks, Speakerfritz. I just sent an email through the forums -- need your direct address to attach the pics, I think. Thanks again!
  14. Any chance someone could host or post a pic for me? This crossover appears to have been professionally built many, many moons ago. I can see the edge of a paper label and read "Lab" and "NY." So a NY company apparently. Two huge sprague caps and two wound inductors -- that's it. It came with a single homemade corner cabinet I bought a few weeks ago. Nifty old piece! I'd like to know more about it. Thanks in advance, Chris
  15. Hey Doc -- with the lapse in posts and Michael's email to me (in which he indicated he was passing on them), I assumed no one wanted these. They are listed on eBay now with a $.99 opening bid... If someone picks the up before there are any bids, I'll eat the ebay fees and end the auction. Otherwise that's my last stop before the burn pile. Let me know! Chris
  16. Probably a scam, but hard to say: http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/ele/258445713.html "Marantz 1960's vintage vacuum tube stereo system. All original and in mint working condition. All faceplates are flawless. These components are absolutely perfect." A pair of 9's, a 7C, and a 10B. Edit: For $19K!!!
  17. Thanks for the info, folks! Alternatively, if anyone knows of an affordable, completed trachorn, I'm all ears. Otherwise, looks like I'll be playing in the woodshop sometime in the future. If I lose a finger, a pox on your homes. Ha!
  18. Is there a published plan anywhere online for wooden Trachorns? I can't afford (and don't need) the ones specifically designed to sit atop K-horns, but I do have access to woodworking tools to try making my own. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Chris
  19. I so want to try a pair of these (or wooden salad bowls). Does anyone know if a more cost-effective alternative for those of us on shoestring budgets? They needn't be framed for the K-horn tophats, as my K-horns are bass cabinets only anyway, and my 511 horns are just sitting on top right now anyway. I like the sound I'm getting at the moment, but at higher volumes it gets a little ringy. Sounds like the Trachorns might be just the thing. Thanks!
  20. Pics sent (finally!) to Michael. Doc, hope you can come after them. I'd enjoy meeting you, and you can check out my K-horn/Altec hybrids (and give me input on future mods).
  21. Gents -- dimensions are 30 x 24 x 41" Pics are forthcoming; I had to check out the new Bond movie at the cheap theater last night, and forgot to snap a few to send your way. Sorry! Great movie, BTW, though the new Bond kept reminding me of Steve McQueen, which was distracting.
  22. Dang... I am looking for something else to try with my Klipschorn bass bins. The Altec 511's are nicer than the Klipsch high end, I think, but still a little raspy. I'll have to keep looking; thanks anyway!
