  1. XXXYXXX would indicate made in 1983.

As Fritz said, they are legit; somewhat rare now, but legit.

As Malcolm indicated, the "red" cone surround was not seen after1975 (usually EV), so it is likely that the original K-22's were replaced with older K-22's.

You may wish to avoid these. If they were in water, there may be oxidation/ humidity damage to the voice coils and diaphragms, etc. in the drivers, if not crossover caps.

    Just a thought.

  2. The caps are usually about all that most need. You can remove the backs, clean all driver and crossover connections and re-tighten. And put a strip of speaker gasket tape on the rear panel braces (leave no gaps...) to make sure the cabinet is sealed. Generally that will improve the bass. Over the years they "leak" and they are not supposed to do that....

Other things (in descending order of cheap but effective)

    • unscrew the woofers and rotate them 180 degrees. Over the years, the basket frame sags from gravity.
    • replace the gasket between the K-55 driver and the horn. It's located in the threaded area and it's probably dried out.
    • consider replacing the K-77 tweeters with CT-125's. Drop in, and they are very good.
    • consider replacing the K-22 woofers with the K-28's (Heresy-III types). Much better bass response. Or the CW-1228's from Bob.
    • consider having Bob re-working the Type E/E2 crossover to be a Type E/4500. This takes advantage of the CT-125 tweeter's response curve.
  3. WFGMD pointed out something interesting; the use of another "circuit". Since the tuners generally send a nominal 15--250mV signal, where it's actually sent as far as "high level" inputs should make no difference. The issue could be resolved from that aspect by simply trying "aux" or a tape circuit just to see if that makes a difference.

  4. Whenever I get a call on the cell phone that is (a) "unknown", (B) 800 type number, or © from people that I know do not have the cell number, I always answer, "Yo've reached the Florida offices of the Central Intelligence Agency's Counter-Terrorism Governmental Liaison Unit, this call will be recorded for security puposes; please identify yourself and the nature of your call"

You can hear the "turdy-dirties" hitting the floor....

Try it sometime, it's fun!!! If they are stupid, and start going into their pitch, ask for a supervisor.... Then have some more fun....

  5. "A professor I knew said something like this:

"I, and many of my colleagues, used to think we should select the best and the brightest, nurture them, and then present them to the world. Now some of us want to educate every student we meet as well as we can, whatever way we can, and we reserve the right to deny failure to anyone. If this produces too many f***ing geniuses for society to absorb, too bad!"

"Crazy Eddie" comes to mind.... An intellectual arrogance that inevtiably leads to frustration and failure when the "products" are unleashed into a society or non-discipline related social structure for which they were certainly not prepared. Denial of failure does nothing more than delay the inevitable realization that the course the student took was not a great idea......

  6. You guys all seem to miss out on what fun it is to tell someone that the thing they just dropped all that money on is "TOTAL CRAP". It is my position that anyone with 3 post or less is fair game for such things.

The true tragedy is that 90% of the folks who want to know opinions failed the first test.... The bought whatever, before researching and getting opinions, etc., and then now either want some sympathy, or more likely some favorable "reinforcement" for their decision. But that's human nature.....
