  1. picky--the drive from SoCal is just too far; but, i wish you much success with your bbq. consider taking your bbq on the road--we're not all bad on the best coast.
  2. I was present for the first night landing of the space shuttle. I was an extra in the movie "Courts-Martial of Jackie Robinson." 7th row at a Lakers-vs-Timberwolves game. oh yeah, I'm Batman.
  3. OK, it's 10:45 p.m. and the temp has cooled to 75 degrees. This past sunday-tuesday I was in Las Vegas, first time I was in 107 degrees and raining! while driving home I stopped for some food in a small town called Baker, California. What is billed as the World's Largest Thermometer was reading 116 degrees! I think I saw the devil. I'm hearing on the news that much of the country is experiencing a heatwave as well. stay cool folks!
  4. cool. my house isn't grounded either. just had a loose neutral coming from the powerline that caused some surges that fried our oven, cable box, and modem. fortunately, i had an expensive surge protecter that my yamaha htr5790 was plugged into--the surge protection gave up its life, but saved the amp. electrican said he could ground any room(s) i want easily. probably have them do that when they run 220 for my spa. the hardwood floors/raised foundation isn't an issue for me. i mentioned that based on what others have told me and i thought that i may be missing out on better sound. thanks for the help. from reading some of these threads, i've got so much to learn.
  5. Michael--thanks for the info--it's always best to get advice from someone that actually has the product you're interested in. i believe i read in a previous post that your home was built in 1950--so was mine. we just purchased it last year from the original owner. no a/c and that is killing me this summer. i've been living on the coast for 20 years, while in the coast guard, stupidly waiting until i retired and settled down before i bought a place. when i finally retired, i couldn't afford a house in the town i'd been living in for the past ten years. had to move 20 minutes down the road to save over $150K. There is actually a big difference in the temperature. i've heard a hardwood floor and raised foundation isn't the best accoutically; but, that's what i've got to deal with. lots of work to do here. when we bought the place, it was running on 50 amps! Don't know how the lady managed. we've been upgrading slowly. fortunately, the house is solid and has double-paned windows. when i have the tunes cranked up, i have to go outside to ensure i'm not bothering the neighbors--the place is pretty soundproof. it's actually built so solid that i have diffculty getting cell phone reception indoors. i have a detached garage that i'd like to turn into my "lounge," that someday will have Klipschorns. I bought some Hereseys back in early 1984 and have wanted some horns ever since. Living room right now is Synergy III which does well. Still have the Hereseys--too fond of them to get rid of. I appreciate the advice. This means absolutely nothing on-topic, but i spent a weekend in Indy back in 1978. i was in the coast guard and one of the guys on the ship was from indy and invited me to his hometown for a holiday weekend. went to a real big party!
  6. Michael--what do you think of the "Whole House Attic Fan?" Someone just recommended that I get one. Sounds like a great idea, are they worth the cost?
  7. That is correct. The numbers of reasons are most likely more than the public knows. Some personal, some professional. From what I've read, it sounds like Roger already had control of the band. I know David got upset about not getting enough credit for his contributions. (Roger has been credited with upwards of 70% of either sole credit or co-credit of The Pink Floyd's music--I read an interview with RW and he kept referring to the band as THE PINK FLOYD). Roger's "concept" albums, although David lauds Roger's talent, did require many words, which David felt created an imbalance. I think David is a much happier person in life. I credit David with owning up carrying a grudge (which to rid himself of that was one of the reasons he said he agreed to do Live8). Post Live8 interviews had RW saying that although it was nice to perform again with the guys, even in that short time together, he could feel the same old crap starting all over again. David was quoted as saying that the experience was "like sleeping with my ex-wife again." Hopefully, one day they can truly reconcile. Roger's solo stuff isn't on my list of favorites--just like the way he does The Pink Floyd better. I just read that Gilmour says his favorite PF album is Wish You Were Here (but he also said Meddle was one of his favorites also). And Waters said he's often said that album should have been called Wish WE Were Here--because they weren't. Both said that Atom Heart Mother and Ummagumma were crap--Roger even went as far as saying that Atom Heart Mother shouldn't be listened to.
  8. SCOOTERDOG--For the record, Ive been drug-free since early 1980although youre not the first to ask that--perhaps it's time to consider that some permanent damage was done? Anyway, Im not a David-hater at all, I should have clarified what I was meant in my original post. I think that Rogers band does a better job playing PF songs than Davids. Ive heard them both, this is just my opinion. RW does tend to get wordy which Ive read was a problem for David, who wanted a balance between lyrics and musicI agree with him on that point. And I really dont want to hear Rogers political tiradesalthough always there, of late have really been harsh. Ive always liked bands like Floyd & Yes that can instrumentally play indefinitely. Snowy may not be a prolific songwriter and wont make the Rolling Stones Top 100; but, the man can play. For curiositys sake, I checked their Top Tenwhich is very suspect. 1Jimi Hendrix 2 Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band 3 B.B. King 4 Eric Clapton 5 Robert Johnson 6 Chuck Berry 7 Stevie Ray Vaughan 8 Ry Cooder 9 Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin 10 Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Its all subjectiveI like Steve Howe, Brian May, Gary Richrath, and yeseven Snowy White. To venture out of rocktwo Brazilian guys, Los Indios Tabajaresgreat classical guitarists. All who in my opinion are better than Keith Richards. (yes, more controversyI think the Rolling Stones are the most over-rated rock group of all time. Still dont know why I went to their Farewell Concert back in 1982?) Although, I do give the readers credit for putting one of my favorites, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan in the Top Ten! Anyway, its fun to argue this stuffand I do it in good spirit. Happy Friday, and enjoy your weekend.
  9. would that be the Seahunt days or Airplane days or as Izzy Mandlebaum on that Seinfeld episode?
  10. With the passing of Syd, Pink Floyd has become a popular topicrightfully so, as they're one of the Top Four bands (in my opinion). Its been reported that their break-up was caused by a battle between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. Waters claiming that he was the talent because he wrote most of their stuffGilmour responding that he was the better musician. Which do you prefer: Gilmours new Pink Floyd or Roger Waters band? I will have to cast my vote for Roger Waters. I will see him live performing Dark Side of the Moon at the Hollywood Bowl this October. I have two concert DVDsIn the Flesh and The Wall. Both are fantastic. Snowy White, one of the guitarists, is far better than David Gilmour; so with the musical talent to compliment Waters great writing, his band is pretty good. As I write this Im reminded of a couple of arguments that my older brother and I have had who was the better James BondSean Connery or Roger Moore? or who was tougher Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson?
  11. According to Roger Waters, Sid was the inspiration for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."
  12. My post disappeared--hopefully this won't be a duplicate??? Picky, or do you still answer to Swabbie? I could answer to that as I've swabbed many a deck in my day. I've been called much worse than a Post Coastie. You mentioned the1970's... my first taste of Michigan was 1978. A brutal winter! I reported to the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw (an ice breaker) in late October, being a young lad from Southern California, I reported with no coat. Guess where I went the very next day--coat shopping! Back in those days, we drank most anything--even MD 20/20. Anyone remember that stuff? My second tour in Michigan was Grand Haven. Los Angeles to Grand Haven was total culture shock; but, that little town grew on me and four years later it was hard to leave. I've only been back to visit once since I left in 1993. Some good people in that part of the country and I suspect you're one of them. When I saw your website, I was envious of that basement. I had one in Grand Haven--all that "extra" space. I sure could use it here in SoCal, space is at a premium (price that is). Regards, Steve
  13. Not even a Hamms? Wasn't that from the land of sky blue water and can you have a better connesieur of beer than a bear? I'm partial to the product from our neighbors to the north--MOOSEHEAD. I'm definately a Lager man; however have tried several "Blonde" ales that weren't too bad. Tried to brew my own once, from some company that has all the equipment. $35 for twelve 20oz bottles of whatever you brew. They have a recipe book for you to reference and they'll make the labels for you. I choose the recipe for Moosehead--it didn't taste anything like Moosehead at all. Was very, very bitter. A few of my friends actually liked it. I now have my own set up; however, I haven't tried it out yet.
  14. Jeremy, actually you helped tremendously. That is exactly how I hooked it up trying to use good old-fashioned common sense. I started second-guessing myself when I read about all these different connectors, etc... Thanks for the help.
  15. thanks for providing some dealer options. if someone would be so kind as to answer this set-up question: does the audio connect to my yamaha from the cable box or the television--or does it matter? sorry for getting so basic, but i want to get it right.
  16. Hey Frzninvt--so, even though nothing compares, what do you enjoy today? Fortunately, for my brother, we can buy Bitburger; although he hasn't been able to find some of the other beers that he liked when he lived in Germany (USAF days). Have you "settled" for something over here? By the way, I'm not a Miller fan; however, in their commercials, the Miller guy says that if you have good beer you don't need to put fruit in it. I like to quote that line to Corona drinkers. Enjoy your day and pour a iced-cold one for those of us in the sizzling weather out west.
  17. ok--take me to school. (I'm at work, errr...should be working) should my cable box have either a optical or digital audio connection? I know the Yamaha does, I know the TV does; but, not sure about the Comcast cable box. I'm guessing that the audio signal should come from the cable to the amp vice from the tv to the amp?
  18. I have a Yamaha HTR-5790 and a Sharp LC-37D6U Aquos 37" HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV. Currently, all audio goes directly to the Yamaha and high-def cable box & DVD directly to TV. The TV is HDMI capable; however, my very-limited knowledge about this stuff makes me wonder if it is worth twice the price of Monster S-Video cable? What I read about HDMI seems to say that both audio and video are combined in one cable. Should I just buy the Monster S-Video cable? (6' HDMI was $119.99 at Best Buy--while an 8' Monster S-Video is $49.99). Trying to learn this stuff as I go--appreciate your advice.
  19. The majority of the restaurants and bars around US military installations in Germany know how Americans love cold beer, so they would also serve their beer cold for those who want it. One gasthaus in particular, the Gasthaus Hollander in Ludwigsburg where I was stationed would freeze their mugs for us soldiers. my brother spent a few years in Bitburg Germany while in the Air Force. He stills likes Bitburg beer. Myself, I'm partial to Canadian beer--Moosehead or Molsen.
  20. AIRPLANE. Uh, well, if anyone from the, uh, from the IRS is watching, I... forgot to file my, my, my 1040 return. Um, I meant to do it today, but, uh...
  21. so, is it true that the beer isn't cold in Germany? If so, is that hard to adjust to?
  22. picky--just got done viewing your home theatre--excellent job! glad to see good things happening in Michigan--I spent four years in Grand Haven, Michigan and one year in Cheboygan during my Coast Guard career.
  23. directly into the system's operator.
  24. My system does sound better after a few Moosehead Lagers. What is your favorite "listening" beverage?
