  1. honestly, that guy did you no favors. the upgrade bite should come on it's own, not injected! lol. congrats on the super sweet deal!
  2. um, well, i would...., let's see here..... damn! move the cars! can't think! +1 ^^^^ making a simple solution into a complicated process. if you want to make more complicated, build the TV into a small recess, then let the screen retract in front of it. i would suggest the bottom of the retractable screen go lightly lower than the bottom of the tv (pure illusion effect). i would also change the gear up. it seems like it's a very tall for what's in it. can you have a smaller ET center? (just a side suggestion, i don't want to derail the current topic).
  3. has the rc-64 been sold yet? i live in OKC but i can have it shipped to TX if needed. you said you already have speakers, is there any gear in my sig you are interested in? i can also mod crossovers if you like? i also build RCA cables or power cables. let me know what you think david
  4. before i dive too deep into this, are herseys even good for HT? i know that's open ended, but what i am trying to find out is, if i could only have 1 type of speaker, is that the best choice? i listen to ZERO music and i am a pure HT guy. i even moded my 7's to be crisper (with out harsh of course) just to make them the ultimate HT speaker. i have spoken to people on here who have a hersey 5.1, but they really liked that speaker. i guess it comes down to, will a RB-61 out preform a hersey in a 3.1 HT environment? i know ears, room, and gear play a huge part, but i want to look solely at the performance of them. there is a seller right down the street, if he doesn't sell his herseys (ver. 1) before i get my 7's here, i would really like to A/B them. another question, i know most people like vintage gear with herseys, but if i am only using emotiva gear, how does that compare? i know any Reference speaker would blend well emotiva, it's the heritage line i am worried about.
  5. klipsch hersey 2: DIMENSIONS: 21.375" (54.29cm) x 15.5" (39.37cm) x 13.25" (33.66cm) that's not that bad. klipsch RB-61 II: DIMENSIONS: 15.4 (H) x 12.3" (D) x 8.5" (W) yeah they are bigger, but not like double the size.... i believe i have heard these before. i need to find someone in OKC that owns a pair and would let me listen to them. what's the going price on these? i have 2 options right now, Hersey 2 for $375 and Hersey 1 for $350 (both of those are a pair). i also know there are a ton of mods you can do. i don't know them off the top of my head, but i can ask you good kind people for th info....... CECAA850, thanks for the suggestion, if i want a "3-way" "bookshelf like" speaker, that's going to be my first choice. i simply didn't think of the herseys. can the Academy be used as a center channel? i have seen a 5.1 hersey set up, i assume another Hersey is best for a center. i would like to have a typical rectangle type center speaker, but i'm sure i can make it work if i have to.
  6. i guess i deserve that.....lol. my bad. i was more meaning an older series i simply have over looked. better yet, an older series that some has moded to a 3 way.
  7. ok, i can explain the blank. my work computer simply sucks! it deleted what i wrote and on another post is said "duplicate post" when it wasn't! anyway.... nice speaker stands. those look like they will work nicely!
  8. my work computer would not let me respond! anyways, i agree, a RB-61 would be a great cheap choice that i can mod. did klipch ever make a 3-way book shelf speaker? i couldn't find one, or at least something that said "3-way".
  9. hey guys, i'm going down to a 3.1 (at some point) and i wanted suggestions. yes, i can use my RF-7's/RC-7 and i'm sure i'll love it. i am also not sure i can't fit those 3 into an "open floor plan." i was thinking of the RB-61/RC-61 or possibly getting the RC-64 if i can find a deal on it, when i'm about to pull the trigger. here's the catch, i would really like to try out a KLF20 for the 3way, but i want a really good center. i also am a MOD nut, so i want play with these and change stuff out. i would love the speaker to have a front port because i'm sure wall space is going to suck. to me, it almost sounds like i need to build a speaker, but i don't think i have the talent for that. i wouldn't know how big/small to make it, parts, or doing real tests with equipement. to me the RB-61 route would be the easiest and simplest. i've already heard them, i owned them for a little bit, andi like them. i could do a crossover upgrade, binding post, internal wire, and be done. anyways, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and will help me make my final decision. oh, if it matters i plan on using the same gear in my sig. (processor, amp, sub, cables, wire, etc.)
  10. this comes up a lot. there is another post concerning RS-42 vs. RB-61. both speakers will work. one will simply work better. it's all about how far the speakers are from you. i'm willing to bet 99% of the people will suggest RS series for the SIDE surrounds without question. the REAR surrounds are always the topic of discussion. what to look for.... how far is the center position (sweet spot) from the rear surrounds? if your seated position is either against that wall or as far as 4' away, then a RS series should work best. if your seated position is greater than 4' from the wall, a RB series should work best. there is only 1 way to be 100% positive which speaker actually does work best. buy both sets, and have a fun time listening to both. when the RB series is too close to you, the sound seems to shoot over you and ruin the "surround" effect. unless the speakers have to mounted in a specific location, experiment with the vertical position of them. in my case, my side's were at 48" and my rear's at 42". that gave me the best results. moving the speaker 6" either up or down, seemed to "turn them off". since every room is different, there is no hard fast measurement that works for everyone. anyways, i hope this helps.
  11. No problem. Glad I could be of some assistance. Keep in mine that vertical position, make sure you go through a gambit of positions before u nail it down. Unless there is only1 spot they can go, which seems to happen a lot....lol. (WAF!)
  12. ok, i just spent i don't know how long searching for it, but i can't find it. i'll try and keep it short. basically i had RB-61's as rears in my 7.1. during movies i almost couldn't hear any rear effects. i played a THX demo to confirm the lack of "audible" sound. i had a friend come over (falcon20x) with a pair of RS-52's to swap out the 61's. with out a doubt, the RS series gave a better performance. my living room had 1 open side (RH side open to the kitchen) and was 16' x 16'. the RB series did sound pretty good, but i had to move the couch almost 8' from the back wall. since this wasn't an option, i purchased a pair of RS-42's to replace the 61's. (Falcon actually purchased them in about 5 minutes after leaving my house, i couldn't believe how fast he found them!) another side note. i had a different friend over to do another test. i have 4ea RS-42 speakers set up 90 degrees from center, and 135 degrees from center. they were all at the exact same height of 48" (bottom of speaker). with out moving the speakers in any direction except vertical, i could give the illusion of turning them on and off. when the side surrounds were at 40", those effects were almost inaudible. when the rears were at 48" they too were inaudible. my guinea pig couldn't understand (me too) how it was even possible. honestly i don't care, so i chose the best height for the position. in my case, the sides were at 48" and the rears at 42". i used 2x4's and made make shift stands until i found the right height. that's it in a nut shell.
  13. I don't remember the date but if u do a search with my screen name, it should come up. I'm at work and don't have access to a CPU.
  14. I did a complete write up on these two as surrounds. Long story short... RB-61 > 4' RS-42 < 4' If the RB series is too close the sound "shoots" over your head. The RS series does a better job closer to u. I personally recommend (couch on the wall) RS series. I wouldn't use a RB series unless the couch was at least 6' away. That way a diagonal dimension would possible be around 10' away.
  15. thanks for the info. i suggested the 809 to him. it's now up to him. thanks again for all the help! ps. i was noticing that onkyo really gives a great product at such a low price. the only ding i can say about them is, with klipsch RF-7's, it seems a bit bright. not sure how other speakers in other lines are, but if that's the only problem, then thats pretty good (IMO).
  16. well amazon has a TX-NR515 for $317. $109 difference. i see a big difference being 135w vs 80w. i wonder if this is something like when they made the 805, then discontinued it and made a 806 with that cheaper transformer????
  17. KSF 10.5. lol, my bad. slip of the keys! just read this in the HT section. it's the Onkyo TX-NR809. that seems like a much better product and price point than the 414, or am i missing something?
  18. hey fellow Kheads...... i have a buddy who has my KSF 10.5's (5.1 set up) and he's looking for a 3D receiver. i'll be honest, since i have bought my UMC-1 i haven't even looked at "receivers." he has his eye on a Yahama at BB, but i simply don't know how good or bad that is (Yahama's web site). normally i go with Onkyo for HT use and Yahama for more music. he's almost a pure HT guy but being honest, probably couldn't tell the difference. he really just wants 3D and "HD audio". the receiver i was thinking would be a good buy is this Onkyo. if there is a better buy, please drop me a line. he does have a small budget on this too, which of course makes it harder. i think it's max $400. if anyone has a used one and is local to OK or shipping would be too much, also let me know. he's looking to buy real soon, under a week i think. one thing that stands out to me in both of these receivers, Onkyo's are 80w per channel where yahama says it's 115w. up until you get into the $1000 onkyo's they are 80w per channel, so i assume, onkyo's spec is closer to the truth. HA! 115W per channel (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9 % THD, 1 ch driven) 80W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09 % THD, 2 ch driven) just pulled that off of Yamaha's web site. this is what i was thinking. they are 115W if there is only 1 channel and 80W is there are 2! so what does that mean if you are using all 5????? if anyone has any additional help or info, please let me know, thanks again for all the help!
  19. thanks. it was hard, but fun. i had to build all custom cables to do it. that way i had exact lengths and didn't have to deal with coiled up cables.
  20. Weekend bump. I'm also willing to trade anything I have for sale for a pair of RB-61's and, or RC-61. Prices too high? Let me know, we can come to some type of agreement.
  21. changed the title, updated info, and put prices. of course, make me an offer and maybe we can agree on a middle ground.
  22. no worries. it was nice to chat about all this stuff again. it's been a while for me. in my head i believe i am a great carpenter! in reality, not so much! lol! i try. did you want my exact design? did you want me to design something different? i like this design, but the 1 flaw it now has, i can't put a RC-64 on it. it would look really funny if i did! lol. by march i bet there will be a very nice stock set of cherry RF-7's, you might want to hold out for those. now, if you want a custom pair where you could possibly have the only Ebony RF-7's, then, yeah, mine would work nicely for you. with my 7's you would have to upgrade your RC-7 or sell your's, buy mine and maybe it won't cost you in any difference. you don't want to have modded mains and a stock center, or vice versa for that matter. also, my 7's are in rough shape. they are overall nice, but there are some bad corners. that's why i was going to veneer them, along with my center channel. i guess you could keep a rough looking set, and sell the veneer on here..... many different options.
  23. But, I like your entire set-up which has inspired me to think about building my own customized component/TV stand with a better wire management system. i am glad i can add to the sickness! when i had it built, the guy thought i was crazy. later on we became friends and when he wanted me to set up a HT system for him, he quickly realized how important all the dimensions were. he had to cut a huge hole in is current ET center because his processor was about to melt! he liked the cable management when he came over for an audition. were you interested in only the RF-7's, and 1 pair of RS-42's? you wouldn't want the RC-7 as well? i'm in no hurry (well, i am, but i know something like this can take a while to sell off). i'm asking because i have an offer for 1 pair of RS-42's right now. (maybe, i didn't make it clear the crossovers were upgraded so i don't know for sure if he wants them). if you are truly thinking of building an ET center, i can help if you like. i can draw it in CAD so if you like a builder and make it. (i don't have the tools and skill to build my own). if you do, well then i can simply give you a rendered pic of the final product.
