  1. I highly recommend Bob and his work. I have a set of '68 K-horns with original Type A networks and they sounded great. Bob and I exchanged many emails, and I decided I wanted to get them re-capped before springing for totally new networks. I like the idea that he was just bringing the networks back up to "factory-fresh" as they would have left the plant in Hope. I also sent him my K-77s for diaphragm replacement, as we both figured they would need it as well. Got everything back in a very reasonable time, hooked things back up, and was VERY pleased with the results. The "new" K-horns were much clearer and detailed; I could tell within the first few minutes that I made a good decision.

For having 36 yr old networks, Bob said the caps weren't all that bad, but new ones certainly make a difference. I don't know what a good rule of thumb should be as to when to re-cap, but it can make an impressive improvement. You will be pleased with what you get back from BEC!

  2. You have the same system as my parents do, Forte II/Academy up front, a set of Forte I for surrounds and a set of KG 1.2 for rear center. It's been a while since I've done movie night over there, but I don't remember any issues that had me staring at the Fortes saying "That's not right." I don't think you'll have any problems with the system. You will really enjoy the Academy up front, as it is a very good timbre match. About the only other thing you could do to better things would be to put another Forte (I or II) as a center. I will be trying that soon with a Chorus II, to have the front trio in that model.

  3. Zamboni-

We have a very similar system, gotta love that NEC CRT!! Check out my remodel story here.

We had a pipe break in the basement on New Year's so the theater was down for about 4 months, but fortunately there was very little gear damage. I've not had a chance to retweak the PJ after hooking things back up, and I need to work the scaler into the system as well, Lumagen Vision HDP, so I can upscale DVDs. Lots of fun down there, and hard to justify going to a crappy local theater when I have a pretty sweet system right now.

One other tweak will be to replace the Academy with another Chorus II. When I built the center rack, I sized it so that it would hold the Chorus II. Just need the time to get it all done, but with a toddler running around, it's hard to get that time.

  4. JM-

Thanks much. Been pretty busy at work with a NASA proposal, and just starting to get back to normal things. Wish I could have made this latest pilgrimage, as it sounds like there were some really cool things to see/hear. Guess I'll have to wait until Sep for the news.

    Doug-

Hope things are well down in CR. At some point, we need to get together for dinner and compare notes. I need to do a bit of tweaking in the HT, but maybe we can figure something out later this summer/fall.

  5. Last one. These look pretty stable and with the weight of the speaker on top, shouldn't be very prone to toppling. The speakers will be on carpet, though not too thick, and should settle into the carpet with time. Interested in all your thoughts. Thanks.

  6. I have a pair of Heresys, purchased from fellow forum member Jim Cornell, which will eventually be handed down to our daughter as part of a bedroom system. These have the early risers, which do not angle the horns up to the listener, so I've been on the lookout for a modest set of stands that can do such a thing. I found some pics of stands that intrigue me and wondered if any of the other Klipschters have seen these or something similar and how they perform. Thanks.

  7. And while we are talking about pilgrimages, don't forget the one the following spring for Mr. Paul's book signing. I was bummed that I couldn't make the 2001 Hope visit, so I made it a point to be there for the book signing. There weren't as many of the forum members there, and I think I traveled the farthest, coming from CT. But I did get to meet both Mr. Paul and Miss Valerie, as well as Tony Reed (I still owe him a dinner!) and Trey and Steve Phillips. The Klipsch's were very wonderful hosts and I learned a great deal on that trip. The next year, after listening to Mr. Paul's own Klipschorns, I got my set.

  8. Jeff-

Ok, thanks for the heads-up. Interesting that he has a tuner, as I'm thinking about getting one if I sell my Scott 333. Both the 2105 and 2505 look pretty sharp from pics I found on the net. Not too far a drive for me, though I'll be out of town for the next several days. Maybe I'll ring him after I get back. Thanks.

  9. If it's not too late, I'll throw a few thoughts in. I would have to agree with everyone who has mentioned timbre-matching. It's an amazing thing that you don't really grasp until you try it out. I started out with Forte II/KV-3/KG 1.2 in a ProLogic system and was very pleased. Went to a DD receiver and "upgraded" to a KV-4 and then to the Academy. Never looked back on the center channel from there. I did a big review of those three center channel speakers several years ago, and you may still be able to find in in the HT forum, titled "Center channel shootout" or something to that effect. Academy/Forte II is a great match. If you can't find an Academy, a KV-3 will do pretty good, and these are up on eBay with some regularity.

Now that I've got Chorus II/Academy/Forte II/KG 1.2 in a 7.1 system, I'm very pleased. Next up to try is a Chorus II center which I hope to do over the summer. I think that three of those monsters across the front sound stage will be incredible. You have the start of a nice system. Enjoy!

  10. Ok, so I know this is the 2-ch forum, but I seem to recall a number of you having Klipsch attached to your computers. My computer speakers took a dump and I'm ready to add Klipsch to another room in the house. I'm torn between the GMX 2.1 (refurbed) and the "regular" ProMedia 2.1. I don't have a ton of desk space for the speakers but want good quality sound. Any advice out there? Thanks.

  11. Ok, all you valve fans out there, how do you go about comparing different types of tubes in your amps? I have my 299B and have been using the Sovtek 7189s that Craig put in, but I still have the original set of 7189 Telefunkens that I'm thinking about rolling in there to see how they sound. Trouble is with the 299B, you have to wait about 30 min to bias the tubes after you put them in. Granted, listening to them while they warm up is probably pretty close to how they will sound, but it's not an optimum solution. I guess you could run one speaker with the Sovteks and one with the Teles.

Since my music "memory" isn't all that long, I'd really like to be able to swap tubes on the fly, but I don't think it's advisable to pull tubes out once they are hot. So you wait 3-5 min for them to cool, then swap out, and start the music over again...not the best way to test. I suppose the easiest is to have monoblocks and then set up each with different tubes, then just see how they sound. What do other folks do?

Also, I know Mullard is a great NOS tube, but I'm seeing some new Mullard tubes out there, so I was wondering how they compare to the old ones? I'm specifically looking at the EL34 tubes, wanting to compare how the Mullard, JJ Tesla, and some of the other brands sound, say EI, Sovtek, etc. I know each amp can sound different, but in general, are certain tube brands better than others? Mike Sanders at Quicksilver really likes the JJ Tesla in his amps, but those Mullards are intriguing. Thanks.

  12. Well, it's been quite an eventful 2005. As many of you know, I got back from Xmas vacation and found our basement was flooded thanks to a broken pipe. Fortunately, the insurance company was easy to work with and we didn't lose much in terms of personal property. While I wasn't totally pleased with the way the reconstruction company handled things, the basement is back up and running, though I still need to do the final audio/video tweaks to get it back where it was. But we've got the HT back up and operational, so that's nice.

Work has kept me off the forum since early Jan, as I've been working 60-70hr weeks on a proposal for NASA, so, in a way, it wasn't too bad that the HT was down during this time, as I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it anyways. I did get to enjoy a bit of listening time on the K-horns/299B, so that was nice.

Much as I have enjoyed the 299B, and the work that Craig put into it, I've been thinking about separates. In a bit of my spare time, I was researching what would be good to replace it. I looked at many different manufacturers, and settled on Quicksilver Audio, thanks, in part, to a nice conversation with owner Mike Sanders. He recommended the Horn Monos, as he has used them with Klipschorns in the past. So, what do I see pop up on A-gon last week, but a very nice set of Horn Monos. The seller and I settled on a price, and they'll be on their way here in a few weeks. I'm excited about trying them out and seeing what separates can do for 2-ch.

So, now I need to raise a bit of cash to help pay for these chrome beauties. Funny that there has been a great deal of talk about the H/K 430/730 lately, as I have one I'd like to sell. I bought this one for my dad off eBay for his basement system. It's in very good shape, and I did the HDBR Builder-recommended clean-up. All the pots were cleaned up with contact cleaner so they work like new, no stickiness here. I also cleaned all the knobs, so they shine bright and replaced the two non-factory ones the seller had put on. Under the hood, I checked all the fuses and replaced any that needed it as well as gave the unit a good cleaning to clear out the dust. Plugged the unit in and was rewarded with the great sound these units are known for.

I'm selling this one because I recently found another H/K 730 with the factory walnut sides that better matches my dad's decor, so this one should find a new home. Why am I not keeping it? Well, I already have one mated up with a pair of Heresys for my daughter's bedroom system, and I'm out of speakers! I'd like to get $125 plus shipping. I wanted to offer it here first, before going back to eBay. I have plenty of pics if anyone wants to see them. There are no scratches in the glass, and only a few minor marks around the volume knob.

I'm also thinking about selling my Scott 333 AM/FM stereo tuner. I bought it about a year ago, it's in excellent condition, all knobs are intact, and the tuning wheels are perfect. Tubes are in great shape, with most being original. Chasis is in very good condition as well. Pulls in a strong FM and AM signal, and the ferrite AM antenna is still there.

I just haven't used it as much as I thought I would, so I'm thinking about letting it go. It did not have a cabinet when I bought it, but right now, it has the factory Scott walnut cabinet that came with my 299B, but I'm not sure if I want to sell with the cabinet. The 299B has one of Alan's custom cabinets, also in walnut, which looks sharp. I'm in the 333 for about $475, so I'd like to get about $400 or so. I don't have any pics yet on this unit, as I'm not completely sure I want to sell it, but if someone is interested in adding a vintage AM/FM unit to their collection, I might be convinced to give it up.

Hope all is well here on the forum, and I'll try to catch up on all the topics I've missed. Shoot me an email if anyone is interested in the gear.
