  1. I have a set of the Chorus IIs and try to run them with a Marantz receiver rated at 125w per channel. It could not bring out what the speakers have to offer. As bill stated the woofer is a monster. The mids and highs were just fine but the bass did not keep up. An extermnal amp made a hugh improvement. $400 does sound like a great deal if they are in good condition.
  2. I am looking for an education of what determines a mid freq responce. I know that the crossover will limit the freq that the mid will see but am curious on what determines the mids limits. I have a set of quartets that I will be updating the caps and tweeter diaphrams and am curious about doing the mids diaphrams at the same time. Bob Crites and Klipsch sell thier versions and those are the options that I would consider. The Q's mid runs from 650-7k hz. Does the diaphram have any impact on the frequency range of the mid? How does the horn play into freq responce? Does the diaphram have any impact on the sensitivity of the driver? Thanks
  3. Marshall, Thanks for the links. The refinishes are nothing short of incredible! I do not think my Q's are at the same starting point(I beleive they are in better condition). I hope to pull off the risers this weekend and experiment with prep and stain. The risers will not be going back on so I feel comfortable with testing. I greatly appreciate your offer and depending how things go I may ask for your guidance. I have been out to visit the "Wall of VooDoo before". I came out when Bill(Willland) was in town with his family and purchased a set of H IIs, walnut from you. Only about an hours drive. Thanks again, Mike
  4. Hello All, I have two sets of Quartets both in the oiled oak. The grains are very mismatched and I am not a fan of the original finish. I have considered reveneering but would like to try to restain them first. I would like them to come out on the dark side. I hope that hides the grain mismatch and I prefer the look of the walnuts, mahoganys and even deep reds that I have seen on other manufactures speakers, specifically Zu Audio. They offer a finish I beleive that is called sangria red. Any tips of preping the cabinets including removing the oil and type of stain, etc to use? A semi gloss looking finish is the desired result. Thanks!
  5. DrWho, thanks for the responce. I will certainly read the rane article. I was poking around on the web and found and article on time alignment on the ChorusI (I have the ChorusII, but would expect the same results). It discusses time alignment with the Chorus with measurements and sound. It seems the sound was preferred stock but it measured poorly VS being aligned to measure well with less pleasing sound. I guess it is just all an experiment. The link to the article: http://www.nutshellhifi.com/MLS/MLS3.html As always thanks for the education.
  6. You can also see if they have any B-stock or refurbished. I purchased one from them that way and the savings was good, product was like brand new.
  7. My preamp/processor is a Marantz avr(8500) I use the pre outs into an Emotiva XPA-5(5 ch) amp. The amp has rca and xlr inputs. My thoughts were an rca to xlr conversion on the input to the crossover and xlr to xlr - crossover to amp. As far as the dbx being an anolog unit vs digital, what does that mean to the end result? Is time alignment actually an adjustment to bring all the drivers voice coils in vertical alignment? I will say my main interest is to see the effect on the bass without the passive crossover. I have some experience in the car audio world with passives being replaced by active and I can say the difference was significant in that enviorment. The thought of triamping is a little intimidating at this point but in time... Thanks for all the input and education.
  8. I have been researching active crossover online and at local music shops and one that has been recomended was a dbx unit, 233xl. It is a 2 way unit, appears very simplistic(a plus for me!) and comes in well under $200. It has xlr ins and outs that should match well with my amps inputs. Any opinions on this unit? Also as some of you out there use pro amps and related equipment, how about pro speakers? Do they not blend well into a home enviroment soundwise, waf, etc?
  9. I can not speak of the Chorus or Forte I's, I have had the series 2 of both and preferred the Chorus. I have played around with both sets before selling the Fortes. What I might expect to be a plus for the Chorus 1s is the absence of the passive radiator making placement less picky. What I would say about the Quartets is the wonderful mids and the tractix horn. The bass is certainly no slouch either and can be padded with a sub if needed.
  10. Thanks for the input guys. Other than using the crossover as a crossover, what other uses(time alignment?) should I look for? If a car audio product were avalable, any reason not to use it?
  11. Hello all, I have several questions concerning active bi-amping. My current system is Chorus II's with crossover upgrades and the mid/highs seperated from the bass. They are driven my an Emotiva 5 channel amp, 2 channels for the lows and 2 channels for the mid/highs. The upper end has been attenuated with a f-mod on the input of the high channels of the amp. Based on everything I have read this is passive bi-amping. I would like to experiment with active so here are my questions. If I bi-amp the active crossover goes between the preamp and amp. The entire lowpass crossover(inductor and bypass cap) come out. Correct? For the upper end the passive crossover stays in the circuit. Correct? The active crossover will completely control the lowend, while the upper end does what? I am guessing that you would set it at or maybe an octave down from the passive cross over point to remove the low freqs. In my experience in car audio crossing over for the sub is best with a steeper filter like a 24 db. The Chorus II cross over at 600hz, what type of slope is suggested for the low pass and high pass? What active crossovers has anyone used that allows for different slopes and uses rca ins and outs? Any input and education on this subject is appreaciated!
  12. The Sherwood Newcastle arrived today, brand new in the box at $140. Pretty nice line of features. Zone 1 & 2 with a seperate amp for both zones allowing independent volume control, rf LCD remote, bluetooth, phono input and pre-outs. Stereo only and can be stacked with like units for more zones. I need to run the wires, hopefully operational by next weekend. No stick with rubber tip!
  13. I recently ordered a Sherwood Newcastle 773. No preouts but actually has 2 stereo amps inside independant of each other so it is rated a 100x4 for what that is worth. It also has an rf remote which will be good for a 2nd zone. I will actually run a gameroom(zone 2) and patio(zone 3). off of it. UPS tracking still has it about 3 days from delivery. I found mine for $140 as an open box, I've seen several under $300.
  14. I use Chorus II fronts with an Academy center and for the rears due to space constrants I went with Reference in ceilings. It is not my favorite set up by far, but I feel that it is due to the ceiling location, not the series miss match. I had in a previous system RS-3s with the KLF series up front and loved it for surround. I added a HSU sub as well and am greatly enjoying that addition. My concern for your set up is just be sure of location of the surrounds before cutting into the walls. Location will be very important to effect.
  15. Thanks for the info! I do have a photo printer, but 8.5x11 is its max size. Maybe a trip to Kinkos.
  16. BigStewMan, I did see a few web sites with pictures and like your idea of printing them. Who or what did you use to print a quality 12x12 ? Thanks.
  17. I have given that some thought but since I need to purchase a receiver also I thought I would try to consolidate. After scanning I have not come up with many options. There is a sherwood out there that comes with an rf remote but I could only find it for 300 + shipping. More than I was hoping to spend.
  18. Helo all, I am putting together a game room and am looking for some album sleaves for wall art. I do not have a turntable and do not have any intrest in the albums themselves. I am looking for stuff I grew up listening to such as Van Halen, Eagles, SRV, AC/DC. Does anyone have a source for these? Thanks
  19. Hello all, I am setting up a 2 ch rig in an adjacent room to the main and am looking for a receiver that has an rf remote to control volume, etc. It will be powering a set of KSB 1.1s. Nothing fancy. Any recomendations?
  20. Bill, I can understand you not wanting to let them go. Where my Chorus IIs sound bigger, I am amazed at the full range that comes out of such a small box. No issue with power as each is driven from a seperate channel of the XPA-5. I was sooo close to finally having the ht dialed in...... then I had to have some fun!
  21. After waiting for some Quartets to come available in my neck of the woods for approx 2 years a set finally poped up. I had visions of turning one into a center channel between my Chorus IIs and keeping the second for parts etc. Two days later a second set came up locally and I jumped on those also. I moved the Chorus out of the way and listened to the Qs for two channel, nice results. I decided for some unknown reason to stack the second(inverted) set and just play around. I can say what I heard was quite pleasing. The sound stage is a little higher, imaging is very comparable to the CIIs, and the bass is a little tighter. I have been listening to this config for about two weeks and expect I will for a little while longer. Just having some fun!
  22. Well I am going with the sub, I ordered a HSU VTF Mk4. Alot of good reviews(on the Mk 3) and it is very tunable with the plugable ports. One of my favorite subs in the past was a M&K with a sealed design. Clean, tight and punchy. I currently run a set of JL Audio in the car, sealed and love the sound-feel. This sub offers a design with the ports on one side and the woofer located on the panel 90 degree to the side, offering a clean look in the corner. I will first try locating very nearfield, aprox 5' away. I will also have the option to put it directly behind my seating position with the sub firing directly into the couch. The sub does come with rubber feet, although HSU does ship there down fiing subs with spikes. I have a marble tile floor so the rubber feet are prefered. If it does transfer to much energy to the floor/neighbors the "subdude" may be the way to go. My quick thoughts on rubber feet or spikes would be spikes for music, maybe a tighter sound. The rubber feet could transfer more vibration to the ground for more of the room shaking effect for ht. Thanks for all the input!

    diy sub

I am considering a sub for ht and have been thinking about a diy. I currently have a Emotiva XPA-2 that could be used for the amplifiction but would not be against say a Parts Express plate amp. I am in a town house and have been anti sub for the good neighbor issue but have some thoughts and questions. My room has very limited space on the front wall so if I place it there it would have to be in a down fireing configuration with a maximum size of approx 12"H x 48"W x 20" D. It would be placed directly between the fronts, below the center. Second thought, my couch is wide open to the rear of the room, I could build something up to a similar size speced above, but with the woofer(s) firing directly into the back of the couch, for possible maximum feel at a minimal level for the neighbors sake. I would consider using a JL Audio woofer(s) for the project as I use them in my car and have been blown away by their sound quality and they provide very detailed box specs and output specs for their designs. Are there any known issues for using a car sub in a home situation? My mains are Chorus IIs, Academy center driven by an Emotiva XPA-5. My ht listening volume levels are much lower than in the theater so max spl is probably not an issue. Thanks for the input and advise!
