  1. I've had a Denon DCM-370 5-disk for the past 3 years and it has served me well. They were $300 new when I purchased mine, I believe now Denon sells the DCM-380 which appears to be essentially the same unit with integrated mp3 decoding. It supports HDCD. With the onset of the SACD(2)/DVD-A war I don't think HDCD is going anywhere, but anecdotally some of my HDCD compatible disks sound really good, others sound less impressive than well recorded redbook disks. I don't have experience with many different units like some people here, but I do know I've been fully satisfied with mine.
  2. I have an older denon receiver. I'm thinking of starting a piece-by-piece upgrade process by purchasing a pre-amp/processor. The issue is I've had problems with some of the various inputs on the unit not working. Is there a quick and dirty way for testing the functionality of the Main Inputs? Thanks
  3. I only mentioned the volume issue because it is my understanding that SS amplifiers function better when they operate closer to their rated output. The point being that if I'm only using 3-5 watts out of my 130wpc 95% of the time, perhaps I would get better performance from an amplifier more at home in a lower wattage region. budget is <$500 And its not that I'm unhappy with my denon's sound, I think it sounds great. Its simply that I, as I would suspect most people here, get as much pleasure learning about and tinkering with my audio gear as I do using it.
  4. I've currently got a denon dra-1035R 130wpc monster powering my RB-5's w/ M&K V-2B sub. I live in an apartment complex so I feel as though my denon is barely stretching it's legs before I'm blown out of the (small) room or the neighbors are knocking on my door. As such, I don't think I'm getting to hear what my speakers (or my receiver, for that matter) can really do. The times I've cranked them they sound great... I'm looking for a budget priced integrated that will make my RB-5's sing without hurting my hearing or my standing with my landlord. I prefer to buy used and am not looking to spend over $500. I was raised on SS, but I have no aversion to trying tubes. I've seen some used creek 4330's at prices I like, but thats the only one on my shopping list as of now. Any other suggestions?
  5. This is straight out of my childhood, anybody else who remembers PBS' "square one TV" should be able to crack this one. does anybody else remember "it all comes back to 9"? if you look at the array of symbols every multiple of 9 has the same symbol. Their little game of picking two digit numbers and subtracting the sum of the two numbers will always net a multiple of 9. Thus the psychic is perfect. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Live and let rock! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6. I own a Denon DRA-1035R stereo receiver and I recently became aware of a disturbing performance difference between the two channels. The left channel is crystal clear, no noise, hiss, just fine, what I would expect. By comparison, however, the right channel has an audible hiss even with the volume at 0, and is noticebly muffled and lagging behind by a few dBs in spl. I've swapped cables and sources etc, etc, and isolated the amp as the source of the problem. Any ideas as to the cause of this phenomena, and if so any easy fixes? Or is it time to start cruising audiogon for a replacement?
  7. I've been running my RB-5s through denon equipment for about 15 months and I'm itching to see what my speaks will do with some smoother amplification. The denon is clean, loud and clear, but I'm more in the market for those intangibles. I'm a starving college student, so money is a big consideration, I figure my dollar will go a lot farther with used gear, these are what I've been eyeing (~<$500, cheaper is better): NAD 3400, C350 or C370 Creek 4330 Musical Fidelity X-A2 Rotel RA-971, RA-985 Listening is 60% classic rock, 40% Jazz, classical, folk. With that in mind, an authoritative bassline and smooth mids/his would be nice. Any comments on the current contender, or other reccomendations in this price range would be much appreciated. ------------- Klipsch RB-5 M&K V-2B sub Denon DRA-1035R Denon DCM-370
  8. ok guys, the RB-5's frequency response drops off at 48Hz. Logic would suggest setting the crossover at 50Hz (the lowest possible). Any reason to set it anywhere else? What are some of you with RB-5/sub setups running your x-over at?
  9. yes, the Denon DRA-1035R is a stereo receiver. 130wpc class-A optical. Sweet unit IMO, makes my RB-5's sing.
  10. ignore this post... I'm pretty sure my receiver has bumm pre-amp outs, I have it running out of the tape-rec outs and it sounds fine...
  11. I've been trying to get my new sub working, and I haven't been able to get a signal to it with the pre-outs on my Denon DRA-1035. To isolate the problem, I plugged the sub into the RCA outs on my CD player, worked like a dream. So, the question is: What could I be doing wrong in my receiver setup thats preventing the pre-outs from communicating the signal?
  12. Anybody out there have any knowledge or experience with the older line of M&K subs that included the V-1B, V-2B, and V-3B. I have an opportunity to get one used at a good price, so any information or opinions would be appreciated.
  13. thanks for the info guys, it still boggles my mind, but I guess I can buy it. The point of the whole thing kind of eludes me, my RB-5s soon to be mated to an M&K sub is plenty of volume for me.
  14. I've heard car stereo guys bragging about their systems, and seen advertisements on ebay and such that claim figures for their systems between 140-150dB of output. How in the world do they get these absurd numbers? With my understanding of SPL those numbers go way past the threshold of pain and are flirting with perforation of the ear drums. Any thoughts?
