  1. Hi, it's been awhile!

Looking at some Klipschorns, having trouble deciphering this particular serial number: 025493993 I'm told it was manufactured late 80s, early 90s.

And also wondering about this serial number: 90679 It's probably incomplete, but I think it was manufactured in 1990. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe T.

  3. Craig, C37 electrolytic capacitor, 40-40-20ufd/350-350-400vdc. It's the 3 capacitor in one can job. I replaced every capacitor in the HF-81, with the exception of the caps in the phono section and figured, might as well replace this one too. I've just had no luck finding one. Thanks in advance.

  4. James I thought that was you, the Doug McCall thing threw me.

    Creative writing #1

    Editor:

Congratulations on the hiring of Art

Dudley. In his very first column, in January,

he mocked "poor people." In the second,

    after casually insulting first "creationists,"

then political conservatives, he manages to

fill about three pages with what basically

amounts to a promo for Avantgarde horn

loudspeakers. Three pages on horns, with

nary a mention of Paul Klipsch or his

speakers? Now that is my idea of "creative

    writing."

  5. Thanks for the replies!

Tom, did you get around to changing the power transformer on your HF-81? I have a similar problem, the power x'former vibrates, there's some wax residue on the bottom plate and a noticeable hum through speakers. I found the power supply resistor R63 measuring 479 ohms, it should be 360 ohms, plus or minus 10%, hope it solves the problem. I'll probally pick up a x'former from Heyboer Transformers, just to have around.

Craig, thanks for the lead on the photos, I actually found them using the forum search function and bookmarked. It was your post: "HF-81 Kiwame resistors and Auricaps". I won't have to bother Chris now.

Dean, I've heard about the long break in period. It will be a good test for me to hear if I can tell a difference before and after break in. If I can, maybe down the road, I'll pick up some decent speaker wire.

  6. I'm getting ready to swap out the coupling caps on my EICO HF-81. I picked up some Auricaps and Hovland Musicaps and noticed the leads are color coded: black-red (Auricap) and green-red (Hovland Musicap). From what I understand the black lead is the "in" and the red lead is the "out". To give an example the driver stage is coupled to the output stage, so the red lead is connected to the driver stage "out" and the black lead would be connected to the output stage "in" is this correct? Does it really matter? If it does matter, I would really be interested in knowing why. Thanks in advance.

  7. Don't you get it it's a revenge thing! I'm shocked Iraq's not a done deal by now and Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, North Korea or any other country thats deemed a threat isn't being pounded by now. The USA is gotta be the most reluctant empire in the history of the world. Thats what has to be remembered America is an empire. The decline of the American empire was advanced by the attacks of 09/11/01. So what to do, surely to do nothing would be perceived as weakness and would encourage further attacks. Thats just the way it is. Take on the Taliban, not a big enough statement. So Washington vacilates, tries to gain support of the rest of the world including enemies and looks foolish. America does have WOMD, why not pick a countries name out of the hat and unleash a WOMD. No significant American casualties would be incurred, it would make a statement and maybe America wouldn't suffer the same fate as the Romans, Spanish, French, British, Eygptian and Greek empires, to mention a few. The other choice is to be really nice to everybody, mend broken fences, apologize for blunders and the errors of our ways, but I don't think that'll work. Hey revenge may not be a bad thing, especially as I remember "the smell of souls" on 09/11/01. One thing thats been bothering me and correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Colin Powell mention at the UN and show satellite photos of a terroist base in Northern Iraq with links to bin laden, why hasn't it been eliminated? That's my rant.

  8. Sure about a blown fuse, from what I understood of Weikman's post he indicated the LED is always red. Wouldn't the LED not be lit at all if the subs fuse is blown? Just for curiosity I pulled the fuse out of my KSW-12, the LED went from red to not lit.

  9. Too bad your not looking to pick up anything now. The discontinued Lincoln Continental is going for about 28k in my area(N.Y.). There must be a large inventory of them around, the cars best feature is a 32 valve, 4 cam V8 rated at 275 horsepower. Definetly not a great handler but a good highway car.

  10. Colin, if its possible, try and get your hands on some tickets for Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall. Last time I was at those venues they weren't using any sound renforcement systems. Its nice to hear music not pumped through any kind of sound system. You can also try Saint Ignatius church on Park Avenue and 84th. street, there's an incredible organ there.

  11. NOS440, have about .5 inches clearance between top of the 7591's and top cover. None of the 7591's are rubbing against any other component (plenty of room) except one of them is a tight fit and that 7591 has about .25 inches clearance between it and the power x'former. I was worried about that, but once I normalized the rectifier circuit (removed 2 diodes and installed the 5AR4 rectifier tube) the unit runs alot cooler, but I'll keep an eye on it. I haven't done any serious listening yet, it's pushing a pair of Klipsch KSB 1.1's right now, just want to put some hours on it before I try it with my Cornwalls. One thing that stands out, its very quiet as far as background noise goes, no hum.
