  1. For these forum members, 213 Miles is Nothing. Let me know what happens guys (even Woodsman) I am going to a Cubs game on Aug 30th, staying at a downtown hotel. I would be willing to Pick Them up here in Fort Wayne and take them as far as Chicago. Time for me to Pay it Forward since SpeakerFritz brought a pair in from New York for me. KAK
  2. Plummer, I think the drivers will fit, I don't think the Horns will fit. The Horns and Drivers are actually 2 different things. Can someone please correct me here, but didn't the Heresy's and the La Scala's use the same drivers for a number of years? Also, I apologize about the La Scala's. I had read La Scala somewhere and thought that is what you were trying to get at. IndyKlipsch has almost done exactly what I recommended except he used Split La Scala's and just sat the base section to the side. And this next part is for TREY. I think this discussion goes to show that there is indeed a large use of Heritage series speakers in HT. I think it is time that Klipsch came up with some marketable center channel options for its users outside of buying the third speaker or doing the Ultimate La Scala HT (IndyKlipschFan) as some people do not have the room, or the resources to buy 5 to 7 La Scala's, but want to keep the good 2 Channel Sound for Music and not degrade the HT experience enough. Currently I run a seperate 2 Channel System with my La Scala's and would build an Matching Half Center if I were to put it into HT use, but I use Paradigm Studio Series for HT because I can match them all the way around the room. Give me and many other users a vialbe alternative and I bet that the HT only set-ups would be hitting the Bay and the "Gon faster than IndyKlipschFan could get the popcorn ready. KAK
  3. Colter, They are just roller carts. They don't need to be perfect, I was just agreeing with Fritz that yes, Plywood does suck up a lot of paint. KAK
  4. I have had my La Scala's for a weekend now. I have played them with and without a sub. For most music, I turned the sub off, but when listening to more roch and roll type music, I did add the sub back in. I am using a Paradigm PS-1200 Sub that has an upgraded Driver (I forget what I put into it, but it reaches down to 12HZ). I have my crossover on the sub set at 55HZ so there is very little overlap with the Scala's. All i gain is the really low end by having the sub. Most older music doesn't even touch the sub, some newer recordings...anything into the 90's or that has been digitally remastered will touch those frequencies below 55hz. My Vote is La Scala's. KAK
  5. Plummer, I have my fair share of "toys" and have auditioned a lot, but still prefer my DSP-A3090 to run HT. It has the 6 Channel Input Upgrade from MSB. For 6 Channel or Even 8 Channel HT, the Center Channel, even in DTS, DD, DD-HD, or DTS-HD is primarily for Dialogue. I will agree that changes if you are listening to 5.1 Channel Audio but for HT, the primary role of Front Speaker is Dialogue while the focus of the L.R is to widen the soundfield. DD-HD is still a far cry from true theatre sound as they use as many as 13 channels. A typical set-up is 13 (and that includes the LFE) as they do not run a center speaker. Now the fact that you are running a Sunfire, it is possible (as is with my Yammy) that Post Processing is done to the 5 Channels. I get a much different sound when my Yammy does the DD processing, than when my DV-s733a DVD player does the processing. This can be attributed to two things...Post Processing by the Yamaha and or different DAC's. The DVD player uses 24/196 while the DSP-A3090 is using 20 bit DACs. Regardless, we have given a plethora of Ideas outside of just adding an identicle front speaker across your soundstage. It seems to me that you are wanting an identicle soundstage without being willing to put the identicle "third" speaker in the center. Your request is impossible for the type of speakers you are trying to match. You can't take a La Scala, put the components in a different box and expect it sound the same. My final 2 recommendations are this. Build a replica of the top half of a La Scala, put the X-ver and mid/tweet drivers in it. Then find yourself a La Scala bass driver and build a seperate downfiring enclosure for it and set it next to the "center" you just built. You will be able to set in front of you television and should get close to the same range. #2. Take a heresy, replace the drivers with La Scala drivers and move on. There is no perfect solution to your situation outside of a Third La Scala or Horn.
  6. Fritz, If you had room for all those other speakers, you should have room for these LOL.... :-) Maybe your Church needs to 2 Pair......... KAK
  7. I went to Menards. Part of my Honey Do list was repairing a cabinet as well so I was only looking at Cabinet grade materials. They did have particle board there as well...it was dirt cheap (I want to say $7 or $8 a sheet) A lot of contractors use it for subflooring...especially in Attics. I have used it my garage as a backing for slot board I put up to hang yard tools from. I was able to use the scrap of 3/4 Birch that I bought to make the repair and my roller cart for the speakers...with enough left over for the top of the center cabinet I want to make. It is easy to tell the diference between MDF and Particle board. The first is weight. MDF is heavy as sin and you can usually get it already veneered. KAK
  8. Plummer, Might I suggest using your Academy and changing the setting to Large Speaker. The Academey is by most standards a full range speaker. When you set a speaker to small, depending on the Pre/Pro or Receiver that you are using, you are setting your cut-off as high as 120HZ. Most manufacturers use a range of somewhere between 80 and 120 Hz for their small speaker setting. You are not even using your Current Academy to its potential which is 63HZ. Also unless you are using the Center for 5 Channel Stereo, you should not need much bass response below 63hz which is what the Academy is capable of as the Center Channel only produces Dialogue. KAK
  9. The Small vs Large setting is less dependant on the size of the Woofer and more dependant on its range. The RC-62's reach down to 57hz, while La Scala's only go down to 53 Hz. This is a matter of selecting the correct Bass Driver to use, not its actual size 6.5, 8,10,12,15 or whatever. By selecting an 8 inch Bass driver that would reach down to 53hz and building the cabinet to produce it would produce the desired results you are looking for. Building the cabinet, insterting the drivers and crossover is not a problem, tuning the Cabinet to get the desired bass result (53hz basement) is.
  10. There is nothing saying you can't use the mid and tweeter from the Khorn/LaScala... The box would need to be a little bit bigger. I just measured my La Scala's. If you used Mid/Tweet from La Scala's including horn, you could then use 2 8 Inch Woofers on the "outsides" of the Mid/Tweet/Horn. The box would measure approximatly 42 Inches Wide, 11 Inches High and 25 Inches Deep. (could actually use it as a stand for Plasma/DLP tv's up to 54 inches and my TV stand for my 52 Inch DLP measure 44 x 24 (lol). Wonder if these would sell LOL. The reason I mentioned using the Heresy Mids/Tweet/Horn and 6 inch Bass drivers was too keep the box considerably smaller... About 35 x 9 x 14 which would be close to the same size as the Current RC-64 Center Channel which is considered a large center channel speaker by my standards. KAK
  11. I sent Ebay a message about the listings. I have seen this happen before. In the last month, a lot of high end audio items have come up with a starting bid of $0.04. My bet is it is the same guy doing the scamming. He gets one or two takers in the scam...gets a few hundred bucks, then hi-jacks the person who just paids' User ID and then starts the whole process over again. He only needs to get two or three takers to send him some cash and can make a quick $2000 or $3000. KAK
  12. Fritz, I can attest to the paint thing. I also built a set of Roller Platforms to put the LS1's on. I bought a sheet of the pricey Cab Grade Birch Plywood, they had a damaged piece so it only cost me $20.00. I have used almost a pint of black paint and it is just soaking through. I haven't hit the Lacquer yet. I may just not use Lacquer since they are only going to be "wheels" anyways to save the floors. When I get around to building the Center, I will let you know. My thought is to take the readily available plans for LS boxes from the internet and cut the Hieght in half since I will not be using the low end anyways. That should leave enough room for my DVD player, dish box and integrated Amp to fit in the opening. I will leave the back open to improve airflow. Question to you is, where do I aquire the Horn, Midrange Drive, Tweeter and crossover? Should I attach anything for the low-end such as a passive sub off to the side? I have 2 twelve inch passive sub boxes sitting in the attic. Any thoughts? KAK
  13. Here is my thought on this whole Heritage Center Channel thing, IN HT set-ups, most systems send the bass below a certain frequency to the Sub and or Subs. I think klipsch should produce a Heritage Center Channel and Call it the Heritage Center..... In my mind this could be done using the Mids and High ends from a Heresy and smaller low end drivers (maybe two 6 inch) This would allow for a wider footprint, limited low end and would meet the needs of present HT set-ups. In fact, I would even be willing to make a prototype for them LOL, though I am sure Trey would have much more fun LOL. The Tweeter and Mid range would be placed in the middle with the two 6 Inch Drivers to the outside. The cabinet would probably be about 36 inches wide, but I don't think that is much wider than some of the current Reference CC's now. KAK
  14. Well, I know this debate may never be solved, but I had the ever present "Honey Do' list that was growing out of hand. I won 4 tickets to todays Cubs vs Reds game in Cincinnati so I sent my wife and her 3 sisters to the game. That allowed me to nail down the Honey Do list and crank the La Scala's... Anyways, I was looking at building a "matching" LS looking box to hold my components and possibly place a Mid and Tweeter in to use a Center Channel. So after readin the threads about MDF vs Birch, I was curious what to use and the costs. The arguements that I have heard are that MDF sounds better on the low end while the detractors have responded with Klipsch only made the change to save money. Well after my "price research" I can guarantee that Klipsch is indeed saving money by using MDF. One poster earlier commented that MDF is almost as much as plywood. That post was correct...accept that is only for construction grade plywood. When you step up to B2 Grade Birch Core Plywood (cabinet grade), its costs over $45.00 for a 3/4 x 4 x 8 sheet. Grade C2 (general core) with a Birch Veneer Runs $32.00. A 1 inch x 4 x 8 sheet of MDF runs only 14.00 while a 1 inch by 4 x 8 sheet of MDF with Birch Veneer runs 21.00. As you can see, Klipsh is indeed saving over 50% on the "base section of the LS2's compared to using Birch Plywood. That said, the 3/4 inch Birch Plywood did not have the strength rating that the 1 inch MDF did, but the 3/4 inch MDF and 3/4 inch Birch plywood were almost identicle. 1 Inch Birch Plywood is not readily available and is quite expensive when I inquired about Special Order...and it must be ordered by the Flat. So thats my comparison...at least based on Cost. Hope this sheds some light...and let the argument...begin again. LOL BTW...The Cubs won, I got nearly half the list done and plenty of time to enjoy some music. KAK
  15. Those look life pro series LS1's. I have to agree and put my money on SpeakerFritz making the short drive from NYC to pick those up....He should have the room, he is a pair short after selling me his 04's. That would give him 2 sets of Pro Series...not to shabby HE could run a DJ service when he's not driving around the country fulfilling all of OUR Audiophile dreams. Thanks for the Delivery Fritz...they sound Great. KAK
  16. The serial number listings are above. As I have encounted on a couple of occasions, that 185607 serial number is probably actually 18S607. These speakers were most likely made a couple of years apart but still close enough that they have same crossovers and drivers. Welcome to the fun, you'll be glad you joined. I know I AM. KAK
  17. indy, Thanks for the heads-up. That is a heck of deal. Let us know what you think of them when they arrive. I think the RSX-3 Satellites alone go for $300/pair if you need to order them separate to complete a 7.1 system. KAK
  18. X-Man, SpeakerFritz told me the upgrade kit was selling for $1000 new for a pair of speakers. Hopefully that means $500 for one in your case. I would start a new thread stating you are looking for the above components and see if you get a reply. Someone might have the parts sitting around. KAK
  19. Ward, Will be connected to 2004 La Scala's stock (AL-4 x-overs) KAK
  20. Wardsweb, The one in the pawnshop has the gold front. I checked out the Manley website and read the reviews. I called the pawnshop (I have purchased most of my wifes jewelry there and they know me well) and they have pulled it off the floor. I think it is very wierd looking, but the sound is what I care about LOL. And on top of that, the wife thinks its retro and likes it. KAK
  21. Not that it really matters, but are you running 5.1 or 7.1 System. I don't recall if the 950 is 6 or 8 Channel Pre-Pro as I have only really investigated the 990. Based on my knowledge of an HT set-up. I use all Paradigm Studio Series, I would go with the Matched Heresy's. I have to agree with IndyKlipschFan's assessment that timbre matching does matter. All my Studio Series speaker have matched x-overs, tweeters and midrange drivers. The only difference is the Low End where the fronts have a greater range. I have tried "plugging" in better musical sounding speakers in the front, and don't like the change it makes...it allows you to pick out the different speakers...at least to my ears. Just my thoughts... KAK
  22. Is anyone on the board using one of these or has auditioned one. I received a call today that there was one of these in town at a Pawn Shop for $700.00. It is in an Integrated Tube Amp at 50 WPC. I was able to stop by the Pawn Shop and Listen to it, but it was being played through some old Advent Speakers with an old Rotel CD player and generic interconnects. Not an ideal test situation. I know these are selling new for $2250/ I know it is older than 2005 model because it does not have the subwoofor out option. I would appreciate any feedback from the Forum Of course these are going to be attached to 2004 LS1's and a Pioneer DV-s733a DVD-Audio/SACD player. KAK
  23. Guess we have something too keep an eye out for. I didn't even look at who the winner was, but yes $1200 is too much. You can get new ones delivered for that price. Mystique or not, I don't think used heresy's are worth more than about $600 in pristine condition and in the last week, three pair on Ebay have eclipsed that mark.... KAK
  24. Buck, It was a no brainer for me....$1800 for 3 year old La Scala's or $1200 for 23 old Heresy's...let me thank about that one for a second...ok I didn't take even a second...La Scala's baby. Maybe the purchaser of the Heresy's will grace us with a post and "how they sound". KAK
