  1. Thanks to all. I actually was unaware that the polarity switch is labled "0 180". I did know it showed 180 as one position. Never had enough brains to check out the other parts of the labeling. We now did four trials, changing who was listening and who was switching, and in each instance the best bass was with the switch set at 0. So, this part of the process is complete. Ok, BigBloato is now going to "lurking" to learn more from youse guys and to keep ole Bloato from making himself even more stupid. Thanks all, I'll be listening with my eyes.
  2. Ok, but it has a 180 toggle switch. How would I set it to 0? The room does have issues for sure. Nevertheless, I hope to get it as good as it can be. BB
  3. Had some great help already from forum members with process to get the sub in phase with the mains. What I do not have is a source of bass which can be easily used to to a/b the 180. I have albums with great bass however there is so much spiking that I can't be sure of my a/b result. I think I have it set now, but I can not be sure....even with the cheery help of my wife. May I ask some of you to recommend a cd which will give me predictible solid base for a long enough note to make my judgement be a bit more solid. Thanks BigBloato
  4. Got help from the wife of BB tonight. Used "Bolero" to AB the sub with the mains. That is not a great piece to work with but I believe we are in phase for sure now. Sub was about 8" away from the rear wall and abt 2" from the long side wall adjacent to it. Moved it forward about 2 " and then also about 3" from the side wall adjacent to it. Lost nearly all the boomingness that I was hearing. Many thanks Ear, DrWho and others incl the detls wife, grandma, nephew and the big dtel.
  5. Ya gotta feel good when you get consensual wisdom from dtel or ms dtel, Dr.Who, ob and The EAR. So, I managed to get it in the corner (the only place it likely could perform in that room) and behind the entertainment center. Lucky guess on my part, I did "sense" that maybe the port ought to not be smacked up against wall behind. My entertainment center is just a bit longer than 5". I pulled the right end out so that it creates a gap 20" wide tween the backside back end and wall. The sw then has an entrance of 20" to get its voice out into the room. It also has a decent amt. of hardwood floor to push out into the triangle formed by the ent. center having been pulled away from the rear wall. My gut tells me that I have found the best place to put the sw. Listened to it last night and it did indeed sound a bit boomy. So now I am going to pull it a couple inches away from the side wall adjacent to it. I sincerely thank all you who have contributed to my knowledge and thus, my pleasure. You are all good people unlike many of the members on a couple other forums I subscribe to.
  6. Thanks for the advice, Ear! I am playing around with it in different spots and different values on the frequency as well as gain. I have not gone with the highest frequency but I will now due to your input. I am not certain I have it in phase with the mains yet. I need to get my wife acquainted with the 180 on a bassy source so I can stand in the best listening spot to hear the phase change. I am using single hook up from the mono jack on the back of the receiver. I was wondering about the duct in that back of the cabinet with regards to distance from the wall in back. Could you please pass over your thoughts on that? The Klispch material shows a couple of ways to place the Sub w, but that is the only guidance. There is no question with me whatsoever that this is the sub I should have bought and DrWho played a strong part in the decision. I am pleased to hear from you with regard to this newest piece of old BigBloat's equipment.
  7. Indeed, old BigBloato is happy to have the Sub 12. This old boy has not experienced "bliss" for quite a few years so he is looking forward to the coming of bliss. We have our non speaker stuff in an entertainment center which is the hypotenues (sp) of the two sides coming together to form a corner. The one leg would be about 4' and the other would be about 3' with the back side of the center completing the triangle. What if the sub w was placed behind the ent.center? Would the sound be muffled or distored? Otherwise it would have to be placed over an oriental rug. Would that be bad?:
  8. Oldbuckster, see my new sig. line for what I am using for running those Heresies et.al. Denon is SS of course and I am tired of this particular receiver. so after I find my Forte lls, I will replace my Polk rears which are el cheapo and then decide what to do regarding tubes or ss. I replied to you earlier this pm but I cannot even find my reply. Its hell being the oldest one on this forum. Old people like me screw up everything to do with computers.
  9. Wo ho ho, no one warned BigBloato about the lousy blue paint on the Sub 12 Box!! Got the box on my shirt and my white shirt now has Klipsch blue highlights. BB took the plunge and came out of Best Buy with the Sub 12 a short time ago. Not hooked up yet because I have not quite made up my mind where to put it. Any general or specific opinions from you guys...and gals...will be welcome. I think I might have some major skooching of heavy things ahead of me. A Happy BigBloato
  10. Your suggestion is certainly on the table. I believe DrWho recommended the Sub 12 a week or so back. My Heresies are first generation new purchased in 1980. Working space can be an issue in our TV room which is HT and 2 channel. Best Buy had the Sub 12 at $476.00 a couple weeks back. I might go that way if I can find a bit better price. Big Bloato
  11. Yes, maybe I can help you! The AR 2-ax was a further developement off the AR 2a. The difference was a slightly improved treble speaker/crossover. I owned a pair puchased new in 1966. If my memory is correct they have a 10" woofer and a crossover adjustment located on the back panel. The user could adjust the speaker for the room by use of the rotary control on the back. The cabinets were hermetically sealed and as such they were very inefficent, which does not neccesarily make them bad speakers. The bass was not boomy at all. It was a solid thud. The only problem in those days was to power them with a relatively strong amplifier. I had a HK receiver, in fact it was the first transistorised HK receiver. I don't recall the power rating anymore but the HK was working real hard at anything more than a loud sound level. During my time of owning these I had to get into the back inside and pull the rotary controls out and clean them because they became corroded and the higher frequency sounds all but disappeared.(sp). It was a job I only wanted to do once, but it was do-able. With your situation you probably can just open it up on the backed side and get to the controls that way. You will find that the cabinet is stuffed with dampening material much like house insulation. It should be ok. There should be small brass emblems on the front grill work which have a large 2 and a smaller ax. The grill cloth was a very light tan/gray color. Hope this helps Big Bloato
  12. Yeah, that is a problem at least for now. Maybe there is a forum member thinking about coming this direction. But I can't blame him for not wanting to ship them. I might feel the same way.......Oh Yeah, I've got you by 9 years. I am 68 going on 69 soon. Funny thing, I am supposed to be dead now according to my Cardiologist a couple years back...fooled him and all the heart care people. Bob G. can tell you I am still very much alive Well, lets keep those black ones in mind and if a good soul who can be trusted is coming this way........maybe so.! Big Bloato
  13. OB, now its becoming clearer to this old hack. Can you post a couple pics to me. I am interested definitely. BB What would be the shipping cost in your opinion? For that matter from where in upstate NY. My (my wife's) preference is a wood color. But that is another battle. I hate myself for getting back into this stuff. I remember the terrific headaches I used to get back in the 50s & early 60s a/b speakers manuf. by AR & Wharfdale & Electrovoice powered by Bogen, Fisher, Mac,. Well, not really Mac. Too high $$$ for a young man in those days.
  14. OB huh, guess I should have been smart enuff to pick up on that. Not so sure I am completely following this, because I am old, probably older than you, but anyway I am looking for the Forte II and if I have this all straight you might be da man. Got bucks and desire to get those Forte s if the price is reasonable....not too cheap but not too high BigBloato
  15. dtels wife, Thank you for the wanting to help note! I will keep an eye out on ebay for sure. I appreciate your opinion of a reasonable price range. I thought I had a good deal going locally here in the Indy area. I don't know who OB is. Can you point the way to him for me please. BB
