From what I just saw in Dave's post, I would have to agree with you Dean. I don't have the skills to take on such a project and I would bet that since Dave is building this for himself vs. Tim's "for profit" build (which he sure has taken some heat for in the DIY communite), I am sure Dave's will be a nicer machine. But for the 400 or so bucks that I paid, it is hard to complain about my F5. Once you have yours dialed in to your satisfaction Dave, it would be interesting to compare it with Nelson's "Real Mccoy"

Great looking build Dave!!! I am not surprised you are liking the sound of the F5. I picked a used Rawson F5 up 3 or 4 months ago to try on my Cornscalas and I was also pleasently surprised. Swapping in the F5 for my main amp (Almarro A205A EL84 single-ended-pentode) is different flavor, and one that I enjoy. Several years ago I briefly tried a Rawson F3 with my then KHorns and it did not impress me as much as this F5 is. More pics , please!

Same here Carl, My kitchen renovation has been stealing all my spare time. I should have the kitchen cabinets installed in about 3 weeks and then back to my builds... 1 tapped horn assembled and the 2nd one has been laying in pieces for about a month

Best I ever heard my previous KHorns was with a Jolida CD into a JM Peach II into a pair of Welborne DRD 45s! Too bad Mr. Welborne lost his way, his amps were pretty special. I have been tempted to buy the plans for a pair of Starcheif 45s and try to find somebody to build them for me (I can put together things with wood, but do not have the talent to build anything electronic ) But with Ron's tatered reputation, I am not sure I want to fork over even $10 to him knowing that he has people still waiting for things that were paid for but not delivered.

bracurrie, Congrats on the new amp!!! I have been eying Justin's new offerings and would be very interested to hear your comparisons to your other tube amps, and especially your loner "Little Ben". I am driving my Cornscalas with an Almarro a205a mkii (5wpc EL84, SEP) with a Transcendent Sound Grounded Grid Preamp. This combo sounds GREAT to my ears and has more than enough for my CSs in my treated 15' x 20' room. This fall I built a pair of Frugal Horns (single driver, full range with the Alpair 7.3) and when I drop them into the system I find they could use a little more power than the 5 watts from the Almarro. Hmmm, maybe the Stereo15 would cover both bases for me.

Hey Emil, My room is in the basement and is just a little larger than yours, at 15' x 20', speakers on the long wall, appox. 10'-11' apart forming an equilateral triangle to the main listening spot. I run my Cornscalas with 2 different amplifiers. For extended, non critical listening sessions while I am doing other things I usually use my HK930 receiver which is vintage 60wpc SS power. There is no shortage of power with the HK and can fill the main floor of my side split house from the basement, great while doing other chores through out the house! For serious listening, I use my Almarro A205a mkII amp which is an EL84, 4.8 watt SEP integrated. This amp sounds better to my ears that the Vintage SS and has surprising output. It will not quite fill the whole house (but very close) like the HK930 does but has more than enough to look after the times that I get the "Led out" IMHO, a 8wpc 300B would have more than enough output for any situation! When I first got into Klipsch, my 1st pair where a nice pair of 86 Cornwalls and I drove them with a pair of Quicksilver Mid Monos (EL34 @ 40wpc). This was a fantastic combo that I have thought about revisiting with my CSs... tons of power and I think you can roll in KT88s for a different tube flavor. I briefly tried a Rawson F3 clone with a pair of KHorns, it was not bad but did not blow me away. I would like to try another First Watt (a real one this time) but would probable lean towards a F5, J2, Aleph J, or maybe an older Pass Aleph amp. Congrats on the new speaks!!!

Hey Carl, I adjusted that back chamber measurement to accommodate the extra thick baffle... what's 1/4" among friends

Sorry for the reverse chronological order... The Baltic Birch was cut on my table saw, speaker holes cut with router, dry fitted with Kreg Pocket screws and then final glue with PL Premium. The exterior panels were cut with a slight (1/8") rebate and the routed with a flush cut bit to make nice corners at final size.


Layout drawn on 1/2" Baltic Birch, as per drawing (adjusted for 3/4" thick baffle)...

6" hole cut with router and homemade circle jig...

Woofer attached via T-Nuts with a couple drops of Gorilla glue to keep them locked in there....

I decided to use some left over 3/4" BB for the baffle, plan was adjusted by 1/4"...

Dry fitted with pocket screws...

Not sure if it was needed but I filled the pocket screw holes with calking.

Carl, I am sure Erich's "kit" would make life easy with this build but for those that don't have access to the flatpak , or would rather try the scratch build like I did, should not have too much trouble with going that route. Even with moderate wood working shills and basic tools, this is a great project to tackle! Thanks again for spotlighting another cool sub.

Marked for future reference... I think I will finish my pair with a similar round over and a top coat of DuraTex. I have 1 built and the 2nd one awaiting the 2nd side to be glued on to complete the cabinet. Stupid Kitchen renovation is getting in my way and not allowing me hobby time

Me to! I drove down to Niagara Falls, NY (where I have my mail order stuff sent to) and picked up my two, 4ohm Anarchy woofs. I will be doing my cabinets from a scratch build. Erich should be giving CECAA850 a commission on these It was hard for me to visualize the size of these woofer until actually having them in my hands. In Carl's build thread I lost the size prospective while reading, it will be very interesting to see how these little guys work. With that said, I am astonished at the amount of sound and fidelity that comes out of the little 4" drivers that are in my Frugal Horns.

I ordered a couple 4 ohm Anarchy woofers on Thursday, mine should also arrive in a day or two. I will be initially trying my tapped horns with my new Frugal Horns in my smaller 2 channel set-up, just looking to fill out the bottom a bit, no "reference" levels needed here.
