    Music Industry Woes

quote user="mas" The fundamental problem that seems to be missed is the market share that wants to "finally get back" is a small niche, not some imagined majority! And it is fragmented by format divisions! that is the point i was making. atleast in lamen's terms!! even though 'we' are the 'small niche', there is enough demand for the good music to still get through. and that sure is not an imagined majority! if that is imaginary, then explain how the bonnaroo shows have been such a success? those shows were predicted to be a huge mistake and yet practically sold out. that is just a for instance of something not being mainstream but still being wanted enough to be profitable and successful. now i'm not debating media formats here. like you said, that is wishful thinking. but i do hope some form of a superior quality WILL exist. what i am saying is that if good artist's and good music have a good outlet, they will be heard. and whether it is from selling their music on some format, or selling tickets for a live show, the money will follow. i'll say it again, what radiohead did puts my idea in concrete. you can post all of the articles you want, but you cannot dispute real numbers put up by real people. downloaded in fact. by the way, hannah montana is a pretty decent talent. i have watched her only because i have a 7 year old girlie girl. so far, she seems to have a head on her shoulders.

    Music Industry Woes

i think it it comes down to very simple terms. look, us who care about quality, both musically and recording wise, want something tangent that we can put our hands on physically and say we own. for now, cd, or for some, vinyl is the best format there is to offer. as for the rest of the population...... well, they don't give two s**ts about owning anything other than another file on their computer or mp3 player. drastically two different types of consumers. unfortunately, the latter is the greater percentage of the buyers. and of course the record companies are all looking to that. the profit that is. whether or not the 'record' industry is up or down, there will always be a market for many types of great music. not that i'm a fan, but has anyone here heard what radiohead did to release their last album?? definitely something to look up if you don't already know. that said, when there finally is a digital format that can offer superior quality audio, i'm all for it. i believe when this type of technology becomes mainstream, it will be much easier for really great bands to skip the whole traditional record industry bs, and be heard for what they are. not a re-hashed, minced, dumbed down radio version that so many records execs want. then, maybe, we can get back to really good music............
  3. buddy- glad you liked the moe dvd! the two bonus songs on that one are my favorites. what did you think of the dts sound? 'the conch' is a great album indeed. 'wormwood' is also great. trust me, if you are into the guitar driven rock, then after a few times of listening to these albums, you will be hooked. their lyrics are sometimes quirky, but i usually find myself singing along anyway... now if ob would give these guys some serious play........................
  4. gotta have your r and b thebes! it is not too new, but david gilmour's 'live at royal albert hall' is a must have. sure you say, how many times can old dave and the boys re-hash old floyd tunes?! this one is much more music and much less theatric's of the floyd days, which i also like. this time around gilmour plays his newest album entirely. then he does several older tunes. the version of 'echoes' and 'fat old sun' are very good. cheers to a guy who's voice is never tiresome and seems to get better with age. not to mention a guitar style of his own. david bowie had to crash the party at the end of the show, but he seems to make a couple of old tunes his own. whether you like him or not, he IS david bowie you know!!
  5. from what i have seen of phish, no. although i have not really listened to phish. what i have heard of them i didn't much care for. they almost sound like a beautiful sunny day and bob weir got to sing all of the dead songs! what moe and panic both are good at is that they have a bright side with sort of a dark overtone. the high and the low if you will.
  6. thereugobuddy-- with the bands you have mentioned you like, moe should really be down your alley. i don't think i have ever heard a band so intent on the tone of their guitar's. the fillmore dvd is a must have and would be great for a first timer to moe. the widespread panic dvd audio disc's i picked up from acoustic sounds are pretty good. the album 'don't tell the band' is the best in that format. now i know why all the vinyl guys are into their thing. this album on dvd-a sounds the way it was intended to sound, but without all the popping and cracking of vinyl. they do however, offer most of their albums on vinyl. oldbuckster-- being from the same area moe is from, you gotta try them out for home team's sake!! let me know if you give them a listen. don't forget about wp as well....
  7. believe it or not, but joe perry is married to a girl from my rinky dink town!
  8. thanks for the welcome! you are never too old to rock n' roll! believe me, i know some cats who are older than i, 34, but who have really turned me onto alot of older stuff that i actually grew up with. i just forgot how great some of those older bands actually were. i remember many nights listening to boston, the cars, creedence, and so many more on 8 track with some monster headphones!! i recently have been listening mostly to older pink floyd stuff, primarily david gilmour. he truly has a feel for the music. not just another guitar player. i also have been listening to grand funk railroad. those guys can whoop some arse on many of their albums. i have seen widespread panic something like 10 times. i first saw them in '93 at auburn university where they played a sold out show in the main arena on campus. that was great considering nobody up north had ever heard of them. that was probably the best show i have seen of them. on the flipside, i saw them just one year later in louisville at a small bar for $12... they raised the roof on that rinky dink place! their original guitar player, mike houser, died a few years back and the albums have never been the same. they recently added jimmy herring to their lineup when i saw them in indy back in the fall. they were once again having a good time on stage and it came across like that. they have such a big warm sound that really makes you 'want' to listen. they have several dvd concerts available, all of which are good. i am awaiting 2 dvd audio discs they have out. i will let you know how those are. 'til the medicine takes' is a great album like you stated above. the 'everyday' album and 'uber cobra' are really great as well. the 'uber cobra' is a live and somewhat acoustic album that has a really unique sound. moe. well, moe is in a category all of their own. i have seen them twice in the past couple of years. let me say oldbuckster, if you like the guitar driven sound of the 70's, this band may just be your ticket into the new millenium!! they truly are a really great band. you have to get their dvd 'live at the fillmore'. it is in dts and the sound quality for a concert dvd is superb. the only thing better than one guitarist, is having two equally talented guitarist in the same band. that said, they each have their own distinctive style, but complement each other beyond belief. all of their albums are top notch music wise. the cream of the crop is probably the wormwood album. if they can only be talked into releasing some albums on sacd, that would be unbelievable. believe me, i will rant on about these guys until you give them a good listen. or rather, i will just rant on about them anyhow!! it's all about the music for me as well. just listening to it on really good gear makes it so enjoyable. with all of the concert dvd's out, i'm not sure why i even have cable. if it wasn't for austin city limits and the weather channel it would probably get ditched. speaking of austin city limits, did anyone catch john mayer a few weeks back? i have listened to his stuff off and on, but he really put on a good live show.
  9. finally a place where everyone talks about their enthusiasm about what music 'they' like!! if never a better realm to learn and listen to new music you have not yet heard. oldbuckster, have you ever listened to widespread panic? they have that diry south sound with a bit of psychadelic flavor. i have listened to them since '92 and have seen them on many occassions. moe is another truly great band that has never seen much of a limelight. both bands are more in the jam band variety, but both are very 'musically inclined'.
  10. i couldn't agree more that the old orion stuff is still some of the best around, if not 'the' best. it was amazing that the hcca amps could be loaded down to 1/2 ohm and really unleash their power potential. there are occassionally some on ebay. i remember hearing about the 'cloaked' electronics in r. clarks grand national. i believe that system only consisted of a total of six drivers? not only is that my favorite car of all time, he had a then, state of the art audio system in it. back in the day, 1990.... cough....!, when i was building boxes, orion used to put out designs and dimensions on bandpass and dual bandpass boxes. i built quite a few of them using the xtr 15. i have never heard anything since a dual bandpass, be able to play like it did at or below 20 hz. ok, i will stop reminiscing now........................
  11. oh yeah, orion xtr's!! that was the day, for sure!! remember the red hcca amps?? i had two orion xtr 12 dvc's in a huge ported box that would rock your world and still sound very tight. i powered my whole system with a 250 sx amp with orions old tri way crossover. although, that was 15 years ago. the stuff they put out now is so downhill from back 'in the day', that i just want to gag. speaking of this brings back really good memories. Frzninvt, had you ever listened to richard clark's grand national? i almost forgot about madisound. i once had a pair of vifa 6.5 mids that were very nice.
  12. this may sound cheesy, but the best bang for the buck co-axials are the infinity reference. the have a soft dome(silk) tweeter which takes away the harshness of most of the metal tweeters widely used. obviously the metal domes handle more power, but just how much power do you plan on using is the question? i have used these in 3 different cars, my brothers boat, and my semi. you will have to put atleast a small amp behind them to make them sound right. but that would be the case for any choice. the head unit won't come close to powering them effectively. if this sparks any interest, i can give you the links to where i've been buying them.
  13. are you looking for the best bang for the buck, or do you not mind spending a little more?
  14. one last thing. has anyone played the oppo 980 and the denon 2900 head to head? i had found several denon's relatively inexpensive as well. it is coming down to either $169 for a new piece, or $250-300 for a used denon. thx.
  15. thanks for the thread referral! i do believe my mind has been made up to buy the oppo.
  16. i will be using the component outputs since my tv is somewhat dated. therefore i would be using the regular audio outputs of the player directly to my receiver. i have considered the oppo 980h or the cambridge audio dvd89. i know the oppo has very good video quality, but will it rival with say a denon when it comes to playing a sacd or dvd audio?
  17. i was looking to purchase an all in one dvd player. meaning that it could play sacd's, dvd audio, and dvd's. up-converting would be nice too. i know the oppo has one of the better reputations for video quality, but what about the audio quality? which player has the best audio along with video quality among lower to mid priced players? i'm looking for the best bang for the buck. any info would be nice.
