  1. DrWHO and TheEAR, Since I think both of your attention(s) are here, how would, say, the svs pb ultra 13, klipsch rsw-12, klipsch rw 12d, and any of the higher end velodynes compare to the likes of the two we have been talking about here? Having not actually hear the pb ultra 13, I am thinking it might do it for me simply because I prefer the ported sound a bit more. I really don't have the time for the diy route, or I would. Probably two commercially available subs is what I'll end up with. Speaking of the Realistic Minimus 7's, Without digging them out and looking at the front panel, I had a very good sounding 2-way speaker set that had the nameplate of acoustic designs, but the drivers and the back tag were branded realistic. 8" driver and small tweeter. Very tight sound.
  2. The BG 210 is a sealed design, but has the good characteristics of a ported design that I like. Namely the deep extension, but without the bloat or chuff. The opposing direction of the drivers is supposed to make placement much easier since it all but does away with wave cancellation. It really surprised me how well balanced it sounded, but still had authority. I will hold off on making a final verdict on it until I have it in my system in a couple of weeks for a trial and I'll give a full report. I would say it was similar the the JL in respect to loudness. A 12" version of this would be hard to top for an all around performer. Hmm, maybe klipsch could try this concept on their next reference subs?
  3. You are right TNrabbit, I am hard to please! [] I suppose the JL sub was such a letdown due to the price of the sub versus actual performance against other subs that I have heard first hand. I think the main thing that I did not like SQ-wise was the sealed design. I suppose I am a little biased towards a good ported design or similar, so I must confess that... don't hold that one against me! Ported sounds better to my ear. The JL, in my opinion, sounded very flat and thin. For instance, the kickdrum on Steely Dans 2AN dvd, was flat and did not give the same bottom end impact that I've heard from the other subs I have listed above. Output was there, it just sounded like an over-exursion of the cone trying to keep up. This was at low to moderate volume levels. We even went back and re-calibrated with audessey and without it. No difference. With my experience and the dealers, I don't think there was anything that was not set up properly. I am not sure what BG stands for. The dealer I visited has been carrying their line for 7 years. They are mainly into planar designed speakers, but have a few subs out as well. The room I was in with the subs had several of their LCR speakers. They sounded very good, but very laid back compared to klipsch. The one sub I want to hear, but haven't yet is the RT-12d.
  4. I finally auditioned the JL F113 with music that I'm familiar with, and in a pretty decent room. All I can say is, WHAT A BIG LETDOWN!! I am not sure how these subs are touted as being at the top of the pack, but I was VERY un-impressed! Yes, it was properly set up and calibrated. I have spent a lot of time listening to different subs, including the rsw-15, rw-12d, avs mfw-15, sub-12, and a few others, and they are without a doubt much better than the JL. Both in SQ and probably even or slightly better on output. For comparison's sake, there was another sub in the room made by BG which is an isobaric set-up. A design not used much anymore. It has two 10" drivers with a 500 watt rms amp. It was very impressive in output, depth, and tightness. Needless to say, it was leaps and bounds above the JL. I am going to have it in my set-up to audition it for awhile. Here is the link to it: http://bgcorp.com/PDFs/R-210i-literature.pdf

  6. I was watching an episode of Austin City Limits a few weeks ago when I came across the band Wilco. As I was watching, I started to DVR it since it seemed really good. I watched it the next day to make sure I just wasn't groggy hoping it to be good at 11 at night. It really was a great performance. Back in the late 90's I had bought their cd titled 'Being There'. After just a few plays, I dismissed it. Even though that album is still my least favorite after hearing most of the rest of them, I should've continued to listen. If you get a chance to see the ACL performance, do so. Their recently released dvd titled 'Ashes of American Flags' is superb. The way the whole idea of the film plays out is what most concert dvd's should look like. The audio is excellent, and the 'movie' style concert is also excellent. A must have!
  7. Yep. If you watch the rear of the cabinet during loud playing, you'll see it flex quite a bit.
  8. Yep, she is very impressive. The look of some of the audience members was priceless when they saw her take the stage!! The look turned to amazement after a few tunes though.
  9. The rw-12d is highly UNderated in my opinion. The size, performance, price, and finish of the rw-12d makes it really hard to beat. I have had a sub-12, mfw-15, and an rsw-15 in the exact same spot as the rw-12d, and none of the aforementioned were as good at every aspect of hi-fi/HT as the rw-12d. Yes, the rsw line will be more 'accurate' in bass response, but the output suffers due to the passive radiator. The rw would belt out <30hz stuff that could not even have been produced with the rsw. Of course, that is just my two cents...
  10. Don't forget the amount the rear of the RSW-15 cabinet flexes...
  11. ^^Uh, not exactly... Very good flic. It is a very dark movie, but a must see! I definitely wouldn't have any small kids around while watching.
  12. I picked this up on DVD the other day(Live at Ronnie Scotts) at BB. Well worth having!!
  13. I recently bought a set of RB-10's and I'm looking to wall mount them. What are the best mounts for the money to give me some flexibility to move them around to get the right angle once the mount is attatched to the wall?
  14. Los straitjackets definitely have a unique, cool sound. YouTube doesn't do them justice. I highly recommend the DVD concert which is also on iTunes. 'can you dig it' is one of my favorites. And who could resist dread zepp? Gotta love Tortelvis!
  15. VIVA LOS STRAITJACKETS!! Itchy chicken!? LOL!!
  16. I had an opportunity a few weeks ago to see Southern Culture on the Skids and Los Straitjackets was the opener. What a surprise!! These guys played for over an hour and sounded amazing essentially stealing the show imo. They have been around for a lot of years and have made a well deserved name for themselves. If you get a chance, check out their concert dvd. The surf sound is really addictive!
  17. I figured I would dig up this old thread and update instead of starting over... When work picked up, I lost interest in getting into vinyl. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I replaced the belt on my old jvc and bought a couple of new albums. I figured it would be something to play with in the garage system which uses an older pioneer sx receiver. I have to say, maybe I really forgot how good an lp could sound, but wow! The bug has bit on wanting to hear a good to great turtable on my main system. I am a little torn between buying an older vintage table, and a new one such as a rega, or similar. A few of the older tables I have looked at are: pioneer pl-530, thorens, b&o, technics, and others. I suppose I am looking for a comparison of a few different models. Garymd, how would you describe the sound of your turntable setup over your cd's? What types of music do you listen to?
  18. congrats wuzzer! this thread is helping my motivation.
  19. costco and sams club. mostly for less useful items! i take a stroll through both of them atleast once a month. you never know what you might find that you didn't know you needed in either one!
  20. if you click on the main web page, you can see under accomodations. i believe they have a dedicated area just for camping. widespread panic is most always great. i am really looking forward to ZPZ!
  21. i have a stash of late 80's and early 90's cds. some good, some bad of both. some of the best sounding recordings i've heard are either fairly recent, or on dvd in dolby/dts. you must be listening to the wrong type of music roman!! isn't it all good as long as you enjoy the music?
  22. This should be quite an interesting weekend... http://forecastlefest.com/index.php
