  1. Yeah, I can't be him becuase I am a Klipsch man and he's an Altec man! I bought a very rare and desirable Bozak DJ mixer from him a couple of years ago and I have been to his music shop (Acme Music), which is in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Oakland. He gets jazz oldtimers and young street kids together in the love of music; it is a noble cause. We still keep in touch via facebook where he told me about the amp. A simple google search landed me here where I read all of these accusations, and felt I should chime in. SO MUCH FOR CONSPIRICY THEORIES! I plan on checking out the amps soon but a trip to Europe next month has left me cash poor!
  2. So what if he set up some forrum accounts to sell a piece of gear. Not everyone has time or desire to be a forum regular. It's not his fault that he was attacked by the forum members. There is nothing wrong with picking up a piece of gear cheaply and selling it for a profit, we all do it at some point. He just wants to find a good home for the amp without putting it on ebay. What's wrong with that?
  3. I know him and I have bought gear from him before, he is legit. He is a British ex patriot and fine DJ who lives in Oakland. While his forum demeanor takes some time to get used to, his actual personality is great!
  4. I am in Vacaville which is about an hour and a half from you and you are welcome to hear 14 watt push pull Heathkit amps pushing my LaScalas. I think this amount of wattage is perfect for the LaScalas and the sweet sound of Mullard EL-84's definately do it for me. I get to very high levels with with this setup. It is loud enough for a dance party actually. I think 60 watts per channel would be too much.
  5. I am using a Bozak 10-2DL disco mixer as a preamp with them. The mixer sounds better than you might think. It has all Alps Black Beauties, Black Gate Caps and it is discrete. The amps were refirbished before I got them. They were also modded so that the volume pot and switch are out of the circuit. I did a little work to them. I installed 5 way binding posts and new insulated RCA jacks. I also shielded the inputs better. They are dead quiet at idle.
  6. Your wife has her own set of LaScalas? My wife doesn't have an audiophile bone in her body, but she is very understanding of my sonic needs. It seems that Kilpsch put grills on the top portion of Lascalas in the late 70's through the 90's. I think they were an option. Mine are from 80 and they have them. There is some beveled trim around them in what looks to be oak.I have black cloth, but I am lusting afer cane.
  7. For years I have been seeking the sound that I heard many years ago. I had a pair of Stephens TruSonic 15" coaxial drivers in some huge cabinets powered by some McIntosh MC30's. The were way too klunky, and at my ripe age of 21 I sold the amps on ebay (in 1998) for $650 and traded the speakers (gasp) for a pair of mint KLH model 17 because they were smaller. After a decade of regret, I finally have rebuilt a system that I really love. I have a pair of Heathkit AA-61 14 watt tube amps powering my LaScalas, and it is wonderful. The LaScalas don't hit as low as the TruSonics, so I have a sub. After 3 months of heavy listening, I think I am quite satisfied. The LaScalas have Crites tweeters and Sonicaps (in one I recently installed Sonicap II bypass caps to see if I hear a difference). Source is either Vinyl on a 1200 with a modified Rega arm or mp3's (gasp) from my computer and soundcard. Preamp is a Bozak disco mixer that I rebuilt with Black Gate capacitors. I used a Bryston 3B with these for a short period of time, but that is way too much power for these speakers. I have used some other amps with these too, but they are so sensitive, you need a very quiet amp. I think with the Heath's you gain a lot of sweetness and vivid detail. If you can find any of these amps, grab them. I would like to get another set if anyone has a pair available. And nothing bad about the KLHs. My dog ate my 17s and then they were burnt up in a fire, but I recently got KLH model 6's for my second system and I love them too.
  8. What happens when you put the old screw back?
  9. I did are re-cap and put in some Crites tweeters and they sound great. I have no advice on refinishing though. Mine have factory walnut stained birch cabinets and I gave them a rub down with Howards.
  10. Also, the rest of your equipment will make a big difference in the what you are not hearing. Try making the signal path as short as possible and keep the EQ flat.
  11. The big 15" speaker is not called a "sub" because it is a full range driver. Searching for a 15" sub can land you in some strange places.
  12. Man, major improvement with new caps. Seems like Donald Bryd is in my house! Good thing I changed them because on one, the 13uF cap for the squawker was leaking.
  13. Yeah, I am going to recap them. I had thought I was going to recap them before the tweeters came, but the tweeters came first. I recapped my Heresys a couple of months ago (with Sonicaps) and it was a big improvement. Anything else I should do to them?
  14. My speakers are from 1980. They are LS-BLSW/S which is birch walnut stain I think. For some reason I cant get pics to post
  15. I just put some Crites tweeters in my LaScalas. Man they sound great. The speakers sound very natural and horns have a little something special. The speakers sound way more open. I had planned to recap them first, but the tweeters came before the caps!
  16. FYI, this is what a Type E looks like stock and with sonicaps.
  17. I have it at about 7 feet up pointing across the middle of the room between a Heresy on top of a Stephens Trusonic P52FR in a front ported cab, and a Heresy on a stand, both in corners. I had to mess with placement a lot to get the room to sound full. It was sounding anemic before the current configuration. Here is the signal path: Technics SLP1200 CD player > Bozak 10 2DL mixer > Bryston powering Heresys > DBX 120XP > to sub amp and sub and Crown D75 to Trusonic and MMTM. Paryy is tomorrow, I can't wait! Tomorrow will be all vinyl.
  18. It's nice! It has a very good effect when it is pointed at a 45 degree angle with the wall.
  19. I haven't listened to it yet, I will hook it up tonight. I am going to work around with placement before the party. It will most likely be at ceiling level firing across the room and hitting a wall.
  20. Wow, I don't know what you are talking about, LaScalas dont have that horrizantal brace [] I will see how this thing goes at my party, It might be a little over the top so to speak. I did just get an active crossover just in case.
  21. Wow, looks like it is the same thing!
  22. I think he is talking about caps in the crossover, not caps in the amplifier.
