  1. I went ahead and glued the BM's to the backing plate. I used JB Weld for the epoxy and some rather strong spring clamps to hold them in place. JB Weld takes 4 - 6 hours to set and a full 15 hours to cure. I'll sacrifice the time waiting because those BM's are going no where once the Weld sets up. One thing I did notice is that 4 out of the 6 BM's I was sent were labeled incorrectly as to how they should be placed on the back of the speaker. The "This Side Up" stickers were incorrect as they attracted to the speaker magnets when placed in this position. So, anyone who purchases BM's make sure that the magnets REPEL each other when you glue them together. By the way, the backing plate I referred to is not a shielding cup, it's a part of the speaker assembly. Klipsch doesn't have shielding cups for the KG 5.5's. I knew by looking at the plate there was no way to remove it without destroying the speaker. I've installed 2 woofers, ones that have fully cured, in the tower closest to the TV and it seems to have done the trick! I'm kind of anxious to install the rest of the speakers, once they cure, to see if I can detect a 1 decibel gain as I was told they would increase by. Thanks for the feedback!
  2. Just received my bucking magnets for my good ol' KG 5.5's. To those of you that have installed BM's on your speakers I would like to ask a question. When I read the instructions, supplied by Klipsch, it says to glue the magnets together. This is not difficult to understand, but the magnet on the speaker currently is seemingly held in to place with a silver backing plate. Do you simply glue the BM to the plate, or do you have to seperate the plate from the magnet, it seems as though you can't, and glue the magnets together and then reinstall the backing plate? I searched the forum for previous info. but I'm still leary of the correct way to do this. By the way, Greg in parts was a great help, and Tom in technical was very helpful as well. I just wish that I had discovered my dilemma before they closed for the weekend! Also, for those of you who care, Tom said that BM's will give your speakers a 1 decibel gain, it's not much but I'll take it! Thanks in advance for any feedback. Aaron N
  3. KV-3 center or an RC-3 center. Either one should do just fine. Some prefer the KV-3, I am part of these some, and some prefer the RC-3. I'm sure you'll get more replies on the subject.
  4. Just wondering how many people have real digital cable? I decided to get "digital" cable a month ago and was disappointed that there was no coax, opt, or rf3 out on the box. Does anyone else actually have these outputs with their digital cable? I've noticed that HBO has shown some movies in DD but I obviously couldn't hear it in DD. Hopefully, by what the cable guy said, there should be a unit coming in a year that will have true digital outputs. "Digital" music offered by the cable company is definitely not as clean as CD's like they advertise it to be. I feel the protrusion of a large L beginning to surface on my forehead.....
  5. Keith, I already have 5.5's and recently acquired a KV-3 center(thanks to Tom). I might look into the 2.5's, but I still want to consider the RS- 3's. Jefnel1, I'm using the Marantz SR 880 reciever. I love this receiver, but I wish it had DTS decoding. Your probably right about the salesman. My first clue should have been when he couldn't figure out the switcher. He must have tried 20 times to get a receiver to work. I was trying to get him to use a Denon receiver(they don't carry Marantz), but he ended up using the only one that he could get to work. He didn't like to "talk shop" either. I can't stand it when you talk to a salesman about home audio and they seem to care less about discusing it. As for them letting me take home a pair of RS 3's, I don't think they'll let me. It's a chain store, I said local because it's the only place I can buy Klipsch in my area, and there policies are probably different than a "locally owned" stereo shop. Tom, I've been meaning to e-mail you and ask how you like your newly acquired RC-3. The overall sound was muddy. The salesman played some scenes from the "Gladiator" DVD(I wasn't really interested in music because I don't use my surrounds for music, I might have to change my mind about this). He was using DTS and seemingly had no ear for good sound, even on a general level. The adjustments on the receiver the salesman was using were probably wrong. So, I'm not against the Reference series, I think I just had a bad experience. I was really looking forward to hearing the RS-3's, but came away disappointed. On a good note, I re-wired all of my speakers and the sound was definitely improved. Even my wife noticed a difference!! I switched from Monster Cable XPHP(center and mains) and XP(surrounds) to the standard Monster Cable(white casing with wires inside). I used 12 ga. for the front section and 14 ga. for the surrounds. What an improvement! As for the RS-3's, I think I'll have to do what you and the others have suggested. Also, I'm absolutely going to find a different salesperson. Thanks for the feedback!
  6. Sad, but true, I went to a local dealer and listened to the RC-3, RS-3's, and RF-3's and didn't like the way they sounded. I was shocked, I have a KV-3, KG 5.5's, and Infinity RS-425's as surrounds, so I thought for sure I would be impressed. I was thinking of switching to the RS-3's as surrounds, but now I'm thinking of going with a smaller set of the KG's. Question, those of you who have some or all of these speakers, what do you think about them? The problem could have been the way they were aimed, crappy receiver, or the salesman didn't know what he was doing. For those of you who purchased these speakers, especially the RS-3's, did you have a similiar experience in the store and buy them anyway? Did you discover, once you got them home, that they sounded better once you had them properly set-up? Just in case I decide to go with a smaller set of KG's, does anyone know where I can get some good information, pictures of this particular series? I'm want a set that has at least a 6 1/2" mid driver. I'm sure they all come with horns, but which, if any, of the them have a better tweet (similiar to the ones in my 5.5's)? Any and all information is appreciated.
  7. I'd love to put the Marantz SR-14 up against the 5800 in a back to back comparison, and see who comes out on top.
  8. Question, where do some of you set you sub crossover at when listening to HT? Reason why I'm asking, I have my mains set to large and the center and surrounds set to small. Being that my reciever cuts everything from 100hz down to the channels set to small, and my fronts are playing full range, where would you guys set your crossover (100-110, lower?)? It seems to me that setting it below 100hz would cause me to lose some range being sent to the sub from the center and surround channels. I've set the mains to small and turned the crossover to 100 but it just doesn't have the impact of running the mains set to large. I have kg 5.5's, KV-3, and Infinity RS-425's as surrounds (need to change). What would you guys do? With 2-channel there is no question, mains set to large and sub crossover set between 50-60hz.
  9. Oops! Somehow my reply was posted a few times. I guess I wanted someone to read what I wrote. Sorry about that!
  10. At the risk of sounding like a dork, I would use 36" - 40" speaker stands. One of those heights should put the RS-3's just above the listeners head, unless your sitting on barstools. This way you have more flexibility in positioning them, instead of holding them up and trying to decide where they sound best. You won't end up with 28 holes in the wall either. If stands just won't do, I would do what Tom said. Set them up temporarily until you find the right position and then mount them. I would try and find a wall stud as well. Nothing would make me more upset than to have the drywall give way and have the RS-3's come crashing down. Thinking about drilling holes in the cabinets of my Klipsch's makes me shudder.

  12. t-man, What talktoKeith is saying is to use the speaker level inputs of your sub with your center channel. In other words, run the speaker wire from your receiver to the sub, run another wire from the sub to the center, and set your center channel to large. What this will do is give you full range to your center channel output, let the sub play the low end, and your center channel will play the rest. Using another 5.5 is a good idea, but a 5.5 isn't going to sit comfortably on top of a t.v., unless it's a really big t.v. and the 5.5 has been shielded. So, a KV 3 or RC 3 will probably be the next best thing.
  13. t-man, The KV 3 is 8" high, 22" wide, and 7 1/2" deep. Just to be clear I had a KV 1 center, not a KV 2. I was saying in my previous post that the KV 2 is probably better than the KV 1, but the KV 3 is better than both of them. As for comparing the two centers, I didn't need to. I played the DVD "Gone In Sixty Seconds" and the sound was much more detailed. For instance, the car chase scenes were awesome, the sounds of the motors (midrange and some low end) were greatly enhanced by the KV 3. The overall sound and clarity were alot more impressive with the KV 3 at the healm compared to my KV 1. The KV 3 even has this cool little post on the back of it so you can aim it downward at the listener, if you need to. I don't think you will be disappointed if you went with one. Myram, I have Infinity RS-425's as surrounds. They use a ferrofluid polycell tweeter (dome), 6 1/2" woofer (as they call it), and 6 1/2" radiator. The sound that they emit, regardless of surround volume, don't match the sound of the Klipsch's. They don't blend well with the characteristics of the Klipsch's. I can't specifically say what differences there are, but to me it's very noticeable.
  14. Ray, You answered my question, but I was writing my reply as you posted yours. I think I'm going to go take a look at the website the Ayre machine is on.
  15. When I watch DVD's certain images appear to be "striped". For instance, during an opening shot consisting of flying over a city with numerous buildings the lines of the bulidings can appear to be striped. It seems to happen only with small, thin lines. Another example would be like the rails of a sailboat. The rails appear to be striped and as the boat moves up and down the stripes seem to move along the rails. I'm wondering if it's my DVD player. It's an entry level player, a Toshiba, and it may not be doing a good job at processing the picture. Do you guys think it's a fault with my DVD player or is it a natural characteristic of these devices? I hope Doug is right, if he is I'd like to find one of these players.
  16. Does anyone use or know about line doublers? I'm pretty sure they work for doubling the lines of video to make sure no characters are missed, but do they work for audio as well? How do they work? Do they simply record the input signal and replace any missing pieces upon outputing the signal? Lastly, how much are they and are they worth the money? Any input is appreciated.
  17. t-man, I understand the dilemma. I own a pair of 5.5's and was using a KV 1 center. Now, the KV 2 is better, but I recently, today as a matter of fact, acquired a KV 3 in mint condition. To me, the difference was amazing. It blends much better with the 5.5's. The only thing I noticed that wasn't good, was that my surrounds don't sonically match the rest of the setup. Time for some RS 3's!!
  18. Are the speakers sealed properly? If the speaker isn't sealed properly aginst the cabinet, I'm wondering if that would make the "buzz". Just as a note, I have to adjust the grilles of my KG 5.5's on occasion because they rattle sometimes. Didn't know if one of these things could be contributing.
  19. BobG2, Thank you for the great information. The RS-3s definitely sound the way to go. Now it's about the funds.....
  20. All of us have to remember that only a selected few can appreciate what we of this B.B. consider to be sane. It has taken me awhile to "break in the wife" with my love of clean sound. But, now that I have "forced" her to listen to the differences between a good system and a system that consists of common day garbage, she to can enjoy the clarity of a well desinged system that we, of this B.B., can only appreciate. I think we have to remember that most people are more wrapped up in the daily struggles of life and that most the enthusiasts of this B.B. have the luxury of obtaining our preferred setups. These people fail to realize what it is that we can so easily appreciate. So, don't be bothered by those of which who can't be as understanding of what we consider a necessity, for they are too narrow minded to give us the benefit of the doubt. If you come across these individuals don't mock them, simply smile and revel in the ideas of what you consider to be beneficial to your needs. They may not understand our appreciation, but if you do who cares?
  21. Thank you for your replies. I just sat through a variable range of all types of music this evening. I cannot descrbe the appreciation I have for my set-up. Granted, alot of the memebers of this B.B. have more of an extensive system than I, but I have to pat myself on the back for going with Klipsch. The clarity and detail of the playback sources is something that other users can only wish for. In light of my KV-3 arriving I can only imagine what this addition to my H.T. is going to do. The only reason I was asking about surrounds is that currently I have Infinity RS-425s as surrounds and I feel that the they are not an acceptible match for the front portion of my stereo. Eventually I will try and find a nice set of used Di-poles in the near future to enhance which I already have. At the current time though I only wish I had the funds in which to acquire these speakers, so that I may enjoy the advantages of a truly matched set of speakers. Although I can't complain about the current setup I'm running, I can see where there is always room for improvement. To all those who wish to have greater than they have I say to hell with those who oppose, for the art of sound reproduction is something only a true enthusiast can apprectiate. Be wise in your acquisitions, but don't deny the lust for what makes you happy. Signed, A Klipsch diehard
  22. Your telling me no one on this B.B. has a set of Di or tri-poles (I believe they exist?) to comment on? Again, any info. is appreciated!!
  23. Love Nascar, sucks about Earnhardt though. I just wish I could listen to it in DD instead of Dolby Pro.
  24. I know there's been quite a few posts about surrounds, but I have a question. I've seen the Di-pole surrounds but I don't know the model number, or is there many m.n.'s? I believe it was Boa 12 who was talking about both Di, and Tri-pole surrounds. So if it was Boa, please tell me what you think of them, I thought you said you had some. Another question, would anybody recommend them for H.T. with KG 5.5's and my soon to arrive KV-3 center? Last question, would I be better off using a smaller set of KG series speakers instead of the poles? Any input on the subject is appreciated.
  25. I'm using a Panasonic 31" tv. Unfortunately my left main has to be about 1' from it. It's the only position I can place it.
