I've tried this today, on the right-hand wall: the speakers lie on their sides, at the junction between wall and floor. But I don't have klipsch woofers to try, the only "free" woofers i have home are the TESLA bass-guitar drivers that where in my scalas when i bought them. As those speakers don't reach low frequencies, it's difficult to say if it's working or not. I should try it with klipsch woofers (but i don't like to open my scalas...) or at least with woofers designed to do similar job. It's interesting from a visual point anyway...even if it takes some floor space Frans

Gil Well, Gil, i had to translate this joke from french to english, wich wasn't easy...maybe i forgot something in the process?? I don't think so, but...please guys, if this joke is not being understood let me know. Maybe I have to take some more english lessons... frans

I'm like a Tareyton smoker (showing my age here) I'd rather FIGHT than switch! Klipsch uber alles! Bose are for weenies Whatever happens, just don't sell the klipsch. Maybe it's time to think about a new appartment, why not a big flat in an industrial, empty construction (that's what I'm dreaming off: 100 square meters of solid cement floor, my klipsch scala, and a few modern paintings on the white walls...)?? Until you move, try pointing the speakers to the external wall, as someone told me horns speakers can easily "fire trough the walls". So your neighbours complaint is maybe not only about the bass... Try to seal hermetically your door too, with some rubber tape (don't forget to open the window from time to time). Good luck, Frans
  4. quote: Originally posted by KGeist: Shock-Late, There is nothing necessarily wrong with the LF horns arranged as you have them. You have essentially replaced a wall with another loudspeaker...a fairly even trade. One concern worth noting is that the subwoofer, as shown in your drawing, is located in the center of the room. This isn't the most ideal position for a subwoofer. Another option would be to place the two subwoofers laterally (stage monitor like) at the junction of the floor and back wall. We have used the LF horn in this position with good results. BTW, a corner has two different functions as applied to the Klipschorn. First, it provides a surface that is required to complete the low frequency horn itself. This is basically what is being provided with a false corner. And second, a corner provides the most efficient means to radiate sound, and is the boundary condition in which the Klipschorn was designed around in order to maximize its operation. You don't have to put it in a corner if maximum performance isn't desired, but it is essential that the LF horn is complete through the use of a false corner (or equivalent). Kerry So according to what you say, the real corner loading is not only lowering the cut-off, but also boosts the bass level relative to the high/mids level, am i right? So assuming these subs would be driven in active operation with their own sub amp and level knob, the "boosting" action of the real horn isn't absolutely necessary, only the lowering of the cut-off by adding backs is necessary in this application? Heuh, sorry for the "strange" english, I'm usually speaking french... Frans
  5. quote: Originally posted by Randy Bey: Hole in the middle? Gee, I don't hear it. My Khorns are easily 20' apart, and I have a soundstage as wide as the Sahara desert... It depends on how far you're sitting from your speakers while listening; if you're sitting a distance shorter than the distance between the speakers, you generally get a hole in the middle of the soundstage. Generally... Frans

  8. quote: Originally posted by sunnysal: I agree with my other klipsch friends, save and buy the finished unit from Al, unless you really, really will ENJOY the process of making them yourself...Al knows how to put these together...regards, Tony In fact i would enjoy using something made by myself; and crossovers seem to be the easiest way to do that, as I'm not a woodworker and I don't have either the know-how to buid, for example, a tube-amp kit. I suspect that with crossovers, as long as you've got the right components and the right sheme, you don't have to do as much measurements. You put them together just following the plans and, as long as you're Ok with using a solder-iron, it doesn't require much more know-how, or does it??? Also, i don't know how much it would COST me to ship those crossovers from US to Belgium, but I suspect it isn't cheap, alas.. Regards, frans
  9. Anyway, I don't like the idea of using a center channel speaker in a stereo set-up. First, it mixes informations from the left and right channels that shouldn't be mixed together: theorically, only the informations that are COMMON TO BOTH CHANNELS should be mixed together in a center channel (wich is what a proper pro-logic or DD processor does). If you have, say, a high-hat localized on the right channel, you don't want it to be on the center channel... What's more, you loose the "magic" of having a singer's voice localized center-stage, between the two speakers, just like coming out of the wall...with a center channel you just say "well, that's normal, there's a center speaker". Just my thoughts anyway Frans
  10. quote: Originally posted by sunnysal: I seem to rememeber that a lot of vintage McIntosh preamp and integrated amp equipment is equipped to derive this signal and send it to a center speaker...someone else will have to ring in on the Klipsch gizmo....regards, tony I have an old little kenwood amp wich has a "mono out" socket, controlled by the volume control (not sure about that tough...should verify). I suspect is could be used for that...

So it could work!!! THANKS JOHN!!! Now i know i can buy some woofers to put in it...low bass problem solved... Frans

  13. quote: Originally posted by BobG: Not a great idea. The K-horn uses the corner as the large end of the LF horn. In the above diagram, you not only lose one solid wall on each speaker, but they are cross feeding and modulating each other. Not a great setup, but I've heard other 'unconventional' positions which made people happy. If you do give this a try, please post your findings. I can see the ad now "KLIPSCH INTORDUCES NEW MIDWALLHORN MODEL" Well, if it works, you'll have to call it the "Frans G. Janssen Midwallhorn" ! A bit too long maybe. Frans

  15. I'd like to use my klipschorn-like cornerhorns as subwoofers with my scalas. But I can't place those cornerhorns in the corners...(i know, i know...)SO i was thinking about trying this (see the pict). Could it work? I know the cornerhorns are designed to be used in corners but I tought that maybe the fact they're side-by-side acts as they were in corners (coupling). Anyone ever tried this?? I cannot try for the moments 'cause i don't have woofers in the cornerhorns for the moment... frans
  16. Huh...yep but the great thing with buiding them myself is that I can buy the caps one week, then the month after the tranformers, ...it could take a while to build them but at least i'm OK with my budget wich is very tight. If I had the money i would buy a set built by Al... regards, Frans
  17. Al, having laScalas with the AA network and K55V midrange, I'd like to build myself a set of ALK cross-overs. BUT as I'm student, and i have not much money, i first need to know what's the cost of the parts; I already downloaded all the shematics and partlist from your website. How much would cost a pair of crossovers if i build them myself?? Also, as i'm in Belgium, i'm not sure about the availability of the brands you use, be it solen, hovland and even less for the tranformer wich seem to be very specific. Maybe I'll have to pick up those from my Klipsch crossovers...but I wouldn't like to do it, since: 1: they're old 2: I'd like to keep the standard cross-over intact. Do you know some other components makers that could offer me the same quality as the one you mention??? Also, what would happen to the sound if i used cheaper components? still better than the standard AA??? And, last but not least, are the components glued to the baseboard? wich glue should I use??? and also wich wire??? Many thanks Al, I'm sure it's not the first time you answer to those question... Frans

  19. Her name was Sarah, boa. It was my girlfriend then. When I saw you both together i tried to drive on you with my hired car but you survived. Amazing you still don't remember that! Frans PS seriously now: Antwerp girls are great. Really
  20. I think Klipsch can sell you two logos. Ask them. Actually they could even give them to you, since it might well be ridiculously cheap. I have to find some for my scalas too, but i believe here in belgium I'll have to wait a bit longer to get them. I'd better ask klipsch US to send them by mail! frans

Yes, it might be considered mild by some standards, but is still not necessary. 2. This bbs might seem like a small, semi-private circle. But it is not. Through the magic of the internet, it is world wide. You don't know who you might be offending. 3. It puts our hosts, the Klipsch organization, in a very bad position. This is important regardless of anyone's private taste in humor. They are being put into a position of being a forum for humor of questionable taste, or censoring things. I'm sure they don't want to do either. So, let me suggest that we stick to the subject of audio and music. Regards, Gil Allright allright, it was the first time and the last time i posted a joke on here. Sorry. Mea Culpa. I apologize. Don't take it too bad either: my intentions were not to hurt anyone, as I know quite a lot of blond women who like that joke. But if i DID hurt someone, sorry. It was just a joke, as there are jokes about french people, black people, belgian people, gay people, old people, tall people, short people.. next time I'll talk only klipsch, I promess. What's that karma-rating by the way? Frans
  22. Well, i have a stupid joke about blond women i'd like to share with you guys (why here? because there are only a few women reading this of course)...Sorry i'm french-speaking so my english will be bad! Ok so it's about a blond woman who is fed up of always being regarded as a stupid girl because of her hair colour. so she decides to change her colour to brown. That done, she's so happy about her new colour that she decides to have a little trip in the country. She 's driving her Corvette and then, suddenly, she finds herself facing a flock of sheeps. She's so in a good mood she says to the sheep-fold: "Hey old man, I've got a deal...If I tell you exactly how much cheeps you have then you let me take one away with me." "138" she says, and by a mere chance, it's the exact number. So she picks up the cutest lamb and goes back in her car. But before she has the time to fire the motor up, she hears the sheep-fold screaming to her: "wait, i've got another deal for you: give me my dog back and i'll tell you what's your natural hair colour!!" dumb but actually i rather like it
  23. quote: Originally posted by Al Klappenberger: Frans, The pictures of Marks's new squawker horn reminded me of the Altec speakers I had years ago. They are long gone now though. They had a smaller horn and different driver. After thinking about it a while I realized the difference. The new horn and driver Mark has will operate over the same range as the Klipsch drivers and are the same impedance, so no mods were required to my network except changing the taps. Al K. I knew about your first error, Al, i was just asking if a 288 altec could be use with an AlK x-over and also if a 500Hz horn could go down to 400Hz...anyway, you answered to both. Thanks
