  1. I'd called him when he had them listed at $300 and he wouldn't come down, he states in his ad that he will part them in a couple of days if he can't get the $265 for them.  I kinda doubt he'll go $200.  I may call him up and take a look at them.  Funny you mention them as garage speakers, that is one of the applications I had in mind.

Id offer two Bones and call-em garage speakers.

  2. There are a pair of KP-301's on Craigslist for $265 dollars, one of them needs a new mid diaphragm (under $50) The owner of these has them in a storage locker, and has no way to hook them up for me to test before I buy.  He had them at $300 but just dropped them to $265 today.  Would I be crazy to buy these without being able to first test them?

    Awesome photo…..

Thanks I think I am suspecting sarcasm maybe or not??

No sarcasm at all. Those subs look great in your room, all that copper looks distinctive. I'll bet it sounds excellent….congrats man, I think you made a great decision on the Klipsch.

Well thank you very much. That was one of the main reasons for even looking at them was all the semi matching copper cones. Plus I have had good luck with all my other klipsch speakers for the last 15 years. I am hoping it will sound awesome. Not sure how my neighbors in my apartment are gonna feel about this. Lol but what do you da,sorry neighbors.

Did you just place the subs next to your speakers and call it good, or did you check for other better placement options throughout the room?  Rarely do subs sound best where they look best :D

  4. The topping t-60 does 80 watts a channel, so each CF-4 would be seeing about 160 watts. A 98db sensitive speaker needs about 100 watts to hit 90dbs at 15 feet. Seems like insane volume levels would be easy to hit even if judging skeptically/conservatively the amplifier output (80 watts into 2 channels) and the CF-4 sensitivity (102 db). I would also be crossing over the CF-4's at 50 hertz.

  5. I'm looking at separate amplifiers for my CF-4's. I love the efficiency of class T amplifiers and really like the Topping TP60. The only issue is that most T amps can't be bridged so I would simply biamp each CF-4 with a TP-60.

The CF-4's are supposedly 102db sensitive, but even if you drop the sensitivity to a more likely ~98db a TP60 should easily be able to power a CF-4 to insane levels.

Is there a reason I wouldn't do this?

CLARIFICATION: I would use two of the TP60's, one for each CF-4.

  6. the problem was one of defective aadhesive used to bond only the front and rear baffles. The baffles are laminated with a nice textured black Melamine finish. The adhesive used is a hot melt adhesive which was designed to bond to the Melamine. The ashesive maker had problems Klipsch had to sue them in the end. The real problem is that just about nothing bonds well to Melamine though some things can stick pretty well like the hotmelt that was custome designed to do so. Please dont think that you can go to the hardware store and buy some hot melt that will stick you can' and it won't. I cannot point you to one single adhesive which has been used by owners or which is on the market which is intended for use on Melamine. So the simple way to deal with this is just remove the baffles clean off all the hot melt (scrape with a sharpe edge) and then uses a Dremel tool (I used the drum sander attachment) and sand off the Melamine wherever there will be a glue joint. The laminate of Melamine is very thin and sands off easily and is fairly short order. Then you can re assemble with carpenters yellow or white glue and be 100% assured that the glue joint will be stronger than the wood. This sounds like a PITA but it is not bad and it is a lot better than using some or any adhesive which is not designed to bond Melamine and then having it fail and having to clean up that mess.

I am sure that you will hear stories of how I did this and I used this and mine are ok. So if you want to believe that then that's up to you but if you want a true 100% fix then you can either do what I have done on two sets of KLF or you can actually try and find an adhesive which is designed as a structural adhesive to be used on Melamine which I can say will be just about impossible for you to find. Please don't tell me about some glue youu found if it is not specified as a structural adhesive on Melamine. White glue and yellow glue will (if you remove the Melamine) provide a fast easy and structural joint that will last longer than you will.

If you think that you have found a suitable adhesive or if someone convinces you that such and such a glue is is fine for the job I would strongly suggest that you test that adhesive on Melamine laminats as close to those used on the KLF baffles. Test them Melamine to Melamine and follow the directions and then see how they hold up. If you by chance happen to find some adhesive that is structural to Melamine and does not cost an arm and a leg and is not highly tocix to use please post about it. As for everything else that I have found on line regarding this issue I have only found patches and what I did is a 100% fix. I have no interests in patches just fixes. I hope this helps and I hope it makes sense. Best regards Moray James.

When I owned klf-30's I used pl premium gooped into the interior corners where it was coming undone. It seemed to work great. I just did a Google search for "pl premium melamine" and found many links to wood workers and cabinet makers saying that PL Premium works great for bonding melamine. On an unrelated note, over the last couple of years I have been using pl premium for many odd jobs, even patching a leaking gas tank on my van and it has yet to have a bonding failure. A truly amazing adhesive!
  7. p>The previous owner had the same problem with this receiver. I took it to the factory authorized Denon Supercenter in Carson CA for repairs figuring they could solve the problem, but its still happening. They have it again right now, but the lady at the counter insists its my speakers. I still can't understand why a decent amp like the 3803 works and the audiophile quality 4806 is so finicky. I'm going to try it out on my other system when I get it back and see what happens.

The Denon techs have you on a wild goose chase. They can't figure out the problem, so in their eyes it must be your speakers.
  8. I'm leaning towards the Alto apx1000. It is class D, ultra powerful, no crazy bells and whistles, sleek look (amplifiers will be displayed on top of each CF-4) and they have removable rack ears. The only downside is that I'll have to use an unbalanced to balanced conversion plug until I switch to the balanced output preamp. Reviews on this amplifier look good. Here's a link to the amplifier http://altoproaudio.com/products/apx1000

I don't know anything about the Alto amp. How much is it? If it were me I would go for the XPA-2 over this. The XPA-2 puts out 300+ watts a channel and has been used by enough people to know that it's a solid performer. I know the XPA-2 is rated as the same 32db gain as the XPA-5 but for some reason it does not produce as much hiss as the XPA-5. I can also vouch for the Acurus. I heard one matched to RF-7's. I know pro amps can sound good, my QSC sounds great - I just have never heard of the Alto. It may be a wonderful amp and if you've heard it then great. If you're going out on a limb, I would go with one of the other recommendations.
Thanks for the input. The Alto amplifier is $200 which is definitely very friendly. I'm seeking info from alto about these amplifiers (concerning fan noise) if it feels like too much of a gamble I'll just hold off until I can afford something better. I would love to get into a couple of class D, G, or H amplification.
  9. they would benefit from a pair of monoblock amplifiers. Here's the catch, the receiver/preamp that I will be using in the future has balanced outputs which are XLR. So I am looking for a pair of monoblock amplifiers that have both balanced and unbalanced inputs. I am looking for any suggestions that would be in the 200-300 watt into 8 ohms range and under 500 dollars each, I prefer used since there is typically much better value to be found. Any suggestions?

These would fit your post to a tee. They are also on the list of sale items that started today.

    XPA100

That is right in line with what I am looking for! Thanks for the recommendation!

  10. The acurus doesn't have balanced inputs, but the emotiva does. Thanks Youthman!

Sorry about that, I read the first few sentences and the last few and missed the part about needing balanced inputs.

    No problem.
