  1. No, I don't usually buy stuff online... There is one site in Ottawa you can try, oemexpress.com, but I don't know if they ship, and they are not THAT cheap... I usually buy from local distributors cause it's cheaper. You might be able to find them in the yellow pages, also some computer stores have lower prices for resellers, which you can get if you have a vendor permit. ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.
  2. Actually I have a Creative TNT2.. Now that I think about it the message does come up when I run apps which use directx... PowerDVD, Geiss, etc. I will reinstall Dx8 Anyway I set up a dual boot with win2k last week to try it out... so far I like it so i'll probably reformat and switch. -------------------- Athlon 500 @ 770 FSB @110 Gigabyte 7IXE Bios F.4 (shitty mobo..) 256MB PC133 Creative TNT2 @ 160/180 Seagate Barracuda 18.1 SCSI on Adaptec AU2940 SoundBlaster Live! Value Pioneer 16X DVD IDE Ricoh 6X4X24 CDRW IDE 3Com EtherLink and of course... KLIPSCH PROMEDIA V2.400!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. On my live card the rear (purple) plugs into the black jack. It is the same jack as the digital out. I get that ddhelp error all the time in winme... must be a new windows feature. ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.
  4. I have a cheap Komodo and have tried all resolutions up to 1280X1024... I don't have the problem you describe. If I were you I would take it in to get look at, if its still under warranty. ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.
  5. The Princeton will be good for DVD's, but I think it will suck as a computer monitor. Personally I find 60Hz too low to be comfortable - you can see the screen flicker and its hard on the eyes. That means you will have to run it at 800x600.. I find this resolution too low even on my 17", let alone a 29"... Everything will be huge. I don't know how much you can get this monitor for, but looking at their webpage the suggested list price is around $1450. For that sum you could get a half decent 17" monitor, a video card or DVD decoder with a TV out, and a nice TV, (say, a 27" or 32" Sony Wega flat screen). ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.
  6. What software are you using on the DSL computer? I was running winroute pro a while back to share a connection, and this program had its own SMTP server, which in turn used my isp's smtp. In other words, all the connected PC's were using the gateway PC as a smtp server... maybe your software has to be set up to do this. Does your DSL use PPPoE? ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.
  7. I have the pioneer 16X DVD. It rocks Got it for $116 (CDN) after it first came out. Now its $160 hehe To buy parts, find a wholesale reseller near you, then get a vendor permit. I have a vendor permit in Ontario and I can buy from wholesalers and I'm PST exempt.. I don't know if Quebec has the same setup, but if you look into it, you can save a lot of cash. Also then you can sell parts to your friends. I can buy 128PC133 right now for $60 + GST... ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.
  8. Before you buy a burner, check how fast your CDROM drive can do digital audio extraction. Even a new (ex. 52X) cdrom can have a very low DAE speed. (I have a Pioneer 16X DVD which is a very fast CD reader, but the DAE speed is only 12X) A fast burner will be a waste of cash if your reader can't keep up - you will need to first copy the source CD to the hard drive, which will make it slow. Also with Adaptec (roxio) EZcreator 4 you don't need to convert mp3's before burning them, it will automatically convert them into audio tracks if you make an audio cd. ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.
  9. That's strange, I find that WinDVD glitches occasionally (misses frames). Doesn't happed often, but PowerDVD never glitches... I have an Athlon 500 @ 770, TNT2, 128PC133, same DVD drive you have...
  10. Does the AE output bass through all six outputs or only the sub output? Does the LFE go to all six outputs when doing AC3 decoding? ------------------ Caring is the first step toward disappointment.

    Monitors

I had a 19" sony trinitron monitor at work for a while and I did not like it that much... a nice flat screen from Viewsonic would be my choice. But then again you said you like your trinitron so to each his own! Honestly I think the 21" is only worth it if you watch DVD's on your PC. Especially those widescreen ones that only use half your monitor to begin with. ------------------ ---------- Caring is the first step toward disappointment. ----------

    Overclocking Tips

Also I bought a 84W peltier, with the intention of making a water cooling system. Just for the hell of it I tried the peltier with the golden orb... man I could have cooked steaks on the damn heatsink... It will have to wait until I have time to build the damn water cooler. ------------------ ---------- Caring is the first step toward disappointment. ----------

    Overclocking Tips

This is my setup... Athlon 500 on Gigabyte 7IXE (Garbage mobo...) Golden Orb Creative TNT2, with fan on heatsink 128 MB PC100, Seagate Barrascuda 18.1 SCSI etc etc... My athlon hits 770 with a 110mhz fsb. (1.95V) I can also run it at 748 with 115 fsb, but then it hangs during 3DMark testing... 770/110 tests fine. If I put a house fan blowing into my open case I can run everything at 748/115 and its stable. Vdeo card speed is 160core, 180memory. I did this with TNTCLK. Coolbits also works if you have fairly new nvidia drivers... 3.53 or higher i think. But this will only let you go to 160 clock. TNTCLK will let you go over 200 for both, and also adjust video memory settings... not that this card can run that fast. All I did for cooling is attach a small fan over the heatsink. I don't think this makes a lot of difference though, it runs fine at 160/180 without the fan as well. Also when I used the house fan it still wouldn't go any faster, so I don't think cooling is a big issue with this card. Raising the core speed makes a bigger difference than raising mem speed in my observations. Also Paragon is right, there is not much difference btw running my cpu at 500 and 770. My temp probe says 50 degs for cpu at 770/1.95V ------------------ ---------- Caring is the first step toward disappointment. ----------

  15. To eliminate a problem with your windoze configuration, boot your PC from a boot disk or into DOS mode (boot disk is probably better), then at the dos prompt type "dir > lpt1" assuming lpt1 is your printer port, you can also replace "dir" with any command that produces text output. See if that prints. I would also clear the bios. If that doesn't help its probably a hardware prob, call them and ***** until you get a new mobo. ------------------ ---------- Caring is the first step toward disappointment. ----------
  16. Email tech support directly about that. ------------------ ---------- Caring is the first step toward disappointment. ----------
  17. This may not be definitive since I don't have an AE, but my goal is to have one with a 6.2 setup like you want. So I'll throw in my 2 cents... From what I understand the AE splits its output into six discreet channels, R/L front, R/L rear, and center/sub. If you plug your 2.1 centers into the center/sub output, the speakers will be receiving a R/L signal, where one is the center, and the other is the sub. So you will get the center channel out of one speaker only, the other is just getting the sub signal, and the pros crossover will send that to the sub. So to get the center channel out of both your speakers you will need to: 1. Split the center/sub (stereo) output into one center (mono) channel, and one sub(mono) channel. To do this you will need a male stereo to 2X female mono adapter. 2. Find which one is the center channel and which one is the sub. Then split the center channel back to stereo with a male mono to female stereo adapter. You are in effect isolating the center channel signal, then upmixing it to stereo. If you plug the 2.1 system into this upmixed output, you'll get the center channel coming out of both speakers. Now for the sub output... The fact that the AE has a separate sub output actually makes life more difficult, because we want to have the pros handle the bass with their own crossover. I don't know if the AE has a crossover of its own (ie does it filter the bass out of all outputs other than the sub)but even if it doesn't, you still want the LFE output to go to both your promedia systems. To do that it will be necessary to mix the sub output into ALL the promedia inputs. To do this: 1. You have already split the center/sub into 2 mono channels; find the sub channel and split it into THREE mono channels (either use a one male to three female mono splitter, if one exists, or use 2X one male mono to two female mono splitters) 2. Mix each of these three into each promedia input (400 front and rear, and 2.1 front). Doing this will be a pain, you will need a male stereo + male mono -> female stereo adapter if one exists. If not you will have to split each of the 3 sub outputs into stereo first, then use 2 male stereo > one female stereo splitter, three times (once for every promedia input). I can post a schematic if this is hard to understand... I am wondering also if this will cause the outputs to 'leak' between speakers... let me know what you guys think. ------------------ ---------- Caring is the first step toward disappointment. ----------
