  1. Music only, windows XP

you do know XP is a dead OS? Is it feasible for you to go to Win7? If not, let me know your configuration (soundcard, how you are outputting to your amp or receiver, etc). I'll help you make this work ;)
  2. Has anyone else had this issue with J-River? I installed it, it keeps freezing up, and when re-installed keeps "skipping".

Never had an issue under Windows 7.  What OS are you using and what are your latency settings?  Are  you using it for video and music or just music?

  3. Replaced ALK's Universal with Dean's SuperX.

Alk's xover is no slouch and at $320 a nice upgrade from Crite's but the SuperX is in another league.True it cost twice as much but parts are not parts. Dean uses Clarity and Mundorf and the extra cost shows.

    Selenium D405 replaced with B&C DCM50

    Nice work, Dean

What did you do with your ALK's?  Are they the Cornscala-wall's?

  4.

Your music would be better served with no equalizer at all. I know I am going to be crucified for suggesting such a thing in this forum, but I stand by it. Focus more on ancillaries such as good equipment, speaker/listener position and room treatment. This will reap dividends in good sound that is free of electronic artifacts that more processing adds.

Not from me. Im in total agreement as well.  Im not going to say someone can't manually EQ a system to sound better to their ears or get a flatter room response on paper, I am saying I cant do it with AydysseyXT32 or a manual EQ without smearing details and altering the original content to be something it never was in the beginning.  I don't believe in modifying the music with boosts, cuts and time mods from reverb or echo with digital filters.   Preserve the original content like it was intended, just correct your listening room..... panels and traps work!

I agree that panels and traps work, however DSP works as well. I've performed some room correction using REW and JRiver and came out with excellent results (I concentrate EQ in the bass regions - I find if you fix the bass - everything else just kinda straightens out).  Here's a peak at my current measured bass response in my room - using an 80hz crossover - thinking about going to 60hz).

  5. What's your opinion.....

I had JRiver versions 17, 18 and 19 and I didn't really hear any improvement in sound quality over WMP. I liked it but it would lock up frequently so eventually I dumped it.

I'm thinking of checking it out again...strickly for two-channel listening. Anybody having problems with it locking up? I had Windows Vista at the time and now I have 8.1.

What are the biggest advantages it has over the others? Also, I wouldn't be using any type of mobile device with it, only a laptop.

    Thanks,

    -Scott

If you are going to take advantage of JRiver - you must use its EQ functions. I hear Vista had a hard time with Jriver - but I've been using Win 7 and I have it on a Beta Win10 laptop with no issues.

  6.

IMHO yes there is, plus the added benefits when it comes to not dealing with APPLE and Itunes

I will not pontificate on SQ differences except to say I am MUCH happier with J-River  :D

     I agree with Joe !

There are many features that come in handy as well. It can be used as a crossover, an equalizer, room correction , and so much more .

I dont really need the master license but if I can figure out swinging it I think I will get it as I am seriously considering Linux

I have a box at home that's crying for me to put Linux Mint on it!!!! I was thinking about purchasing the Master license as well.  $20 now or $25 later - they are both worth it. I haven't shown you guys my subwoofer plot using REW and JRiver PEQ.... here it is

Not bad if I say so myself! I've never had JRiver crash (except once back during 16). This program is reason I use my PC as a prepro now.

  7. Jim

It is 1 time for the current version J-river 20....................As I understand it you can use version 20 forever with no further fees or you may choose to upgrade when a new version is released at a special price

That is what I have read on there forums

Joe - You are correct :)

  8. I stand corrected $1800.00 on ebay.

Link from alert I posted a week and a half ago or so,

    John

He's an audio collector if I can put it at best. He actually has a pair of Klipschorns up front and he had his Shinalls in the rear.  He tends to have a lot of Klipsch stuff, Bose, and Def Tech...he also has quite a few old school power amps (a few of the old Onkyo power amps with the big analog meters).  His prices are generally not solid...he will negotiate (but don't look for a free lunch either :) ).  Pretty good guy to deal with and an excellent guy to talk to.

  9. This is a PSA and I know that many will have read my concerns before.  If you haven’t then I hope this resonates with you.

We’ve recently lost Boxx and as of today, looks like Wake Junkie was given a scare with a second chance.

I think we all know intellectually that nobody is guaranteed ‘tomorrow’.  Hopefully, this will kick-start everyone into some reviews of your affairs and get things in order.

Do you have a checking or savings account that is in your name alone?

Do you have a brokerage account (non-IRA) that is in your name alone?

Do you have any of the above that are in joint name with a parent or spouse?

Do you have beneficiaries on ALL your accounts, INCLUDING your 401K?

In all the above examples (and for sake of keeping this post short, I’ll not (yet) get into any details…..if the thread withers away, it withers away.  If it creates another round of discussion then I’ll carry on as I’ve done in the past (or you can maybe search and read my old comments)

EVERYONE should go to your bank and put a “POD” (Pay on death) designation on EVERY account at your bank.

“Oh, but Richard, I have a WILL that takes care of that”

Bunk.  You are living with false confidence. (though technically, the statement is correct)

The Will simply says who gets it and that’s all.  The Will (for lack of better word) actually DICTATES that your things go through probate prior to your children getting them.  If you put a POD on your checking account, it will bypass probate and go MUCH quicker and much easier to your loved one(s).

Brokerage account(s)….  Put a “TOD” or Transfer on Death designation on them.  Again, a TOD (like POD) supersedes your will and allows the asset to totally bypass the probate process.

Oh, but I have my 40 year old daughter as my joint owner.  BAD BAD BAD idea.  Why?

Suppose she’s involved in a car accident or something in life (divorce?) where she gets sued.  All of “her” assets (1/2 of your account) can be attacked…..  do you want to have YOUR account involved in HER situation?  NO.  The way around it is make her POD/TOD beneficiary, give her power of attorney and be done with it.  You are now totally protected from her creating an issue.

I doubt that Boxx had any remote fear of anything being an immediate threat to him.  I doubt Wake Junkie expected his stroke.  Fortunately for Wake Junkie, he’ll read this and his light bulb will go off as to the wisdom of this thread.  Everyone understands and jumps to do these things once they've been awakened.

I'm just trying to wake you up prior to a more serious event waking you up (or perhaps, not waking you as in the case of Boxx)

Everyone (and I mean 100% everyone) needs to do something like this.  If you love your family, why would you choose to do something that will make their life that much more complicated when, at the stroke of a pen, you can simplify it for them?  (NOT having a TOD/POD on your accounts is every bit as much of a choice as having them)

I challenge everyone to contact your broker, contact your banker…..ask about a TOD or POD and get the forms.

Just remember, POD is done at the bank and TOD is done at the brokerage firm.

I challenge anyone who actually DOES this to report back to the thread!!!

The gauntlet has been dropped.  Guys, (gals?) show your family that you love them enough to take care of some of the little details.

    excellent advise indeed!
  10. I guess this question is directed more to Heritage owners and Khorn in particular and I value any and all opinions. A friend of mine has a near mint, restored pr. of '81 Khorn's. Included will be the Dave Harris Fastlane top hat horn mods, squaker and tweet, and the ALK slope networks. Nothing original is included so I cannot return to the OE top hat configuration. Is this a plus or minus not only for listening pleasure but should I ever, resale. Do these mods scrae you off? And yes they were professionally installed. These are not a hack job. As of now I WILL purchase them this weekend unless too many red flags are waived from those of you with more knowledge than me. And these will be my first Khorns and only Heritage I have not owned.

Later this evening I will give a short double thumbs up to my "new" '78 LaScalla's. In short - just like I remeber when I bought my first factory pair in the late '70's, maybe better with todays superior electronics.

    Thanks  all -

    Those are good mods!!!!!

  11. thanks for the link and advice.  i'll probably just wait until after i build the subs to do anything.  $450 is a bit more than i'd like to spend but it might be worth it if it makes a big difference.

Definitely wait until after you build the subs - because that's the most important part of EQ - the bass region. Get the bass issues straight - everything else has a way of just falling in line (in most cases ;) ).

  12. Sorry - Didn't get my donation out last night. I had to attend a wake last night for a co-worker's parent.  Just sent my donation.  R.I.P. Boxx and condolences to the family.

  13. I don't think he is a forum member but i know him well. Bought my lascala's from him. You can buy with confidence from this guy,he is a fellow Klipsch lover and a good guy. Lives about 45 minutes from me in robertsdale al. I'm in Pensacola

Hey Nitro - I'm about 15 minutes from you!!!
