  1. wIllland,

At mid to quiet listening volume it will fill in that low end nicely. However, with your Forte's the sub may fall behind if you listen at loud levels. I think $250 is a little high in my opinion. From what I've read the SW12 internal amps were prone to some problems(more than others, all relative). The SW12 II has a better record with their amps.

I had an SW12 and gave it to my brother. Bought it for $80 a couple years ago. It needed repair - in the active woofer, the spider came unglued from the woofer cone. After gluing it worked fine (check my avatar pic). I used it with my KG 3.5s for a time and it pounded nicely. Then my brother was subless and I gave it to him.

Hope this helps and good luck. Maybe you can haggle him down.

  2. It's probably worth mentioning the garage needs to be well ventilated to remove the humidity in the space. Otherwise you could end up with condensation forming on the walls. You don't want a mold problem.

    dbspl

Thanks dBspl, that is a concern. This is to be a small piano shop and in doing that I need climate control. I hope to have a dehumidifier and air conditioner in there once the work is done. That should tame the humidity. Once I have a heater, air conditioner, and humidifier in there I think I'll be out of room!

I've been rebuilding pianos using a friend's shop space, but I'd like to get my garage turned into a good small shop for the littler jobs.

  3. my desk does not have the space to accomodate the subwoofer

Don't know if you need everything to be within your computer desk, but you can set the sub just outside your desk on the floor. I've seen setups like that more than once and it looks fine. I'm using an SW8 sub and it serves as a nice stand for the left speaker and a lamp.

  4. Unless the slab is insulated underneath and has a thermal break all the way around the slab to the foundation as well as properly insulated walls, any heat you put out there will be like trying to heat an aluminum beer can in the cold. It will be expensive no matter what to heat, even if you want to keep it at a relatively cool 60-65 degrees.

House was built in '68. Don't know if they insulated underneath cement foundations back then. I thought of the cold cement floor, but didn't think it would influence the air temperature as much as you are saying. Do you think a few rugs layed down would help? Or maybe carpet squares? I could get fancy with the color scheme with those [:P].

The roll-up door is newer ('01) and insulated. The back outside door will get replaced with an insulated one.

Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. Anyone else who has ideas please be heard....I'm a sponge.

  5. rivernuggets let us know how it turns out..

Got it today around 10 am. It's the HK 3480, same model but different unit than the one I returned. They replaced it with another refurbished. Opened it up and let it get to room temperature (hour or so). Fired it up and.....I'll have to send it back. Music cut in and out whenever it wanted. Didn't matter what source was used or which speaker set (A or B). The symptom worsened over 10 minutes where the silence was 80% of the time. My understanding of refurbished is it has been tested the same as a new one and should work like new. Weird to get two bad ones in a row.

Maybe this means that I've filled my quota in the 'returns' category for a few years to come. Glad to get that out of the way, whew!

  6. The garage needs to be properly insulated also. Plan to work on it when it's a little warmer. Just thinking about heating solutions lately. It's an attached garage so I am only concerned about three sides. The ceiling is drywall finished with blown-in insulation in the attic, so that's ok.

Wasn't thinking of baseboard-type heat. It that a good way to go? Is it expensive? Garage has cement flooring, so would there be a floor put it over it?

You can tell I know LOTS about this stuff [:|].

  7. Sometime this year I hope to install a heater in my one car garage. Looking for power vented natural gas models, but if someone has other things in mind please let me know. I've wandered around the big box stores and am a little overwhelmed. Hoping to keep the cost to $500 or less if possible. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  8. Welcome to the Forum dad311. If your MP3 player plays Vorbis files (.ogg files), those provide better sound quality than a file of the same size in MP3. Here's more info: Link. If you are indeed interested in better quality, consider using a cd or dvd player and enjoy uncompressed music. I know the random button won't be as cool, but the music will.

  9. I personally like the 3-way sound of the Forte compared to the 2-way of the Reference series. I owned a pair of RF-7s, found a great deal on a pair of Forte IIs and sold the RF-7s. Fortes have an incredible midrange and tons of bass.

Bought a pair of Forte IIs last month and have been listening to my stuff all over again. Been A/B-ing my RF3s with Forte IIs and have been loving the mids in the Forte. That midrange horn shows what the RF3s are lacking. Don't get me wrong, love the RF3s and what they can do given their size. Maybe it's apples to oranges, as each pair was designed with a different goal.

  10. I've been using the Sennheiser HD280 pro phones and am very pleased. A little weak in the bass, but I haven't tried a seperate amp.

Hope I don't get thrown out here, but I've been using Radio Shack's Optimus Pro35's for over ten years with my cd walkman, minidisc, and now MP3 player, and they are suprisingly good (in the mobile audio application). Gone through three sets of pads over the years.

  11. I bought a refurbished HK 3480 a month ago ($140 - Craigslist) and it had problems. Warranty was still good, the seller was very cool and arranged the return, so HK is sending me a new one. HK even paid the return shipping.

OK, here's what I'm getting at. I read somewhere in the past that they sometimes upgrade the replacement receiver to the next model. Don't know if they are doing this with me, but I'll let you know. Scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

All this to say.....I don't know!

  12. Welcome to the Forum Shahab.

Sorry to hear about the RB-81s that did not deliver what you anticipated. You described the bass so awful, I started to think if the the binding posts in back were properly connected. The two red binding posts should be connected by a metal clip; same with the black pair. If they are not, it's possible you were hearing only the tweeters. Just a thought...they were probably hooked up right.

If you want to stay with the Reference line, one bookshelf speaker to look for would be the RB-75's. They were made to have a similar sound to the RF-7's (amazing floorstanding pair). The RB-75's are discontinued though - don't know how the used market is for you there.

I own a pair of 81s and enjoy them very much with an NAD 705 stereo receiver. Bass is adequate. My only complaint would be a small midrange gap.

You mentioned trying to find a good AV receiver. I've been using a Harman Kardon AVR525 since 2002. It lacks the punch and headroom of a higher powered amp, but it's given me no problems and has warmth to its sound. Too old for HDMI, but it does have multiple optical and coaxial inputs. I'd love to upgrade but I keep buying speakers [:D] .

Good luck in your bookshelf speaker search!

  13. p.s Still try to find how to upload the image. That should help for you guys to picture the layout etc.

After you click 'write a new post', click 'options', then 'add/update', browse for your file, then slide the horizontal bar to the right and click 'save'. Make sure to have something written in the 'compose' part of your post, even if it's a '1'. Hope this isn't too run-on sentence like.

    Welcome to the Forum, Chris9809!

  14. FWIW Decorator Heresys were intended to be customized.

Thanks for the encouragement and how you did your grilles. I need to get my brain used to the idea of modding these. Keep double guessing, like it would be graffiti-ing vintage beauties, even though they are rough right now. Gotta save some $ and figure out the plan start to finish, then I'll be mentally ready.

  15. I haven't even started updating them yet (here's the thread http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/129439.aspx) but there are black Heresy grilles on Ebay and I'm thinking of getting them for my Heresy I Decorators. Decorators are to be naked and drooled over, but I know my young son will not leave them be. Those woofers will be like a bullseye to him. Thinking about veneering over the Heresys and installing disc magnets where velcro spots normally are, in the speaker and the grilles.

Here are my questions. Should I even go the grille route with these? If so, the grilles will protrude off the front of the motorboard without a wood border - think it would look ugly?

edit: Should have said I hope to have the magnets under the veneer, out of view. That way I can remove the grilles and have the Decorator in all its beauty. It all works so well in your head before the project, doesn't it?

  16. Why veneer is it cause the wood is so damaged you have to fill then it looks ugly. So you just go over it with veneer, how bad is bad berfore you decide to veneer.

Yes, when repairs aren't good enough, in comes the veneer. When to veneer is up to you. You can always try whatever kind of repair knowing it can be hidden under new veneer. How bad is bad? Depends on where the speaker is going to be and how good you want it to look in that location. In some situations dings and scrapes are ok, like a garage pair.

I want these Heresys I just bought to look sweet. There are quarter-sized chips on each speaker in a couple places (on the sides, near bottom), too ugly for me and I think a repair of mine will be noticed. Also the idea of veneering and making these look like new again really tickles the brain. So far it's been real fun looking through different kinds of veneer. BTW, thanks for the veneer seller suggestions all.
