  1. Hi All,

I 'm hoping to draw on the group's experience.

I've been accumulating spreakers with the aim of having an all Heritage 7.1 system. So far I have a pair each of Belles (mains) Cornwalls (surrounds) Heresys (rears) and 2 subs. What I'm obviously missing is a center channel. I'm getting by with a phantom center for now but I am looking at moving and one "must have" for the new house is a larger listening room with a 20'-ish long wall where a center speaker will become a necessity. Ideally, I'd like to have another Belle but they're pretty rare on the used market so I've been looking for LaScalas thinking that, in addition to being more plentiful, the bigger K400 horn would be a plus. I've been looking within a couple of hours driving radius on Craig's etc for a few months but as yet, no luck.

Anyway, I recently came across some Altec Valencias. I went and listened to them and it's obvious they need some work. They're very shrill--even to a horn guy--and the treble attenuator control doesn't seem to do anything on either speaker so apparently the crossovers need work. From what I've read, the Altecs, when working properly, are in the same league with Klipsch Heritage however, I'm guessing they have, for lack of a better term, a different flavor sound than my Klipsch.

So my question to those with experiece with both brands, could one of these work well as a center channel in my system?

Thanks in advance for the help.

  2. I don't want you think I'm trying to to low-ball you and "steal" these but if you exhaust other possibilities, I'm will to pay $400 or so depending upon what they look like in the flesh. One plus is I'm close by in Rochester and would pick them up so you wouldn't have to mess with boxing and shipping.

So, if you can't get more for them elsewhere and want to unload them, let me know.

Like what someone else said, they're pretty good sounding speakers. You should consider keeping them if you've got room for them.

  3. It would be straightforward to record TV on DVR and radio on computer and stagger the playback times (if one's willing to significantly time shift viewing) but I think the biggest problem is that the delay is not consistant (i.e, different pauses for commericals and station identification). My guess is you'd have to keep making sync adjustments as you go.

I'm basing my assumption of the varied delay time on my experience with the similar situation of listening to local Steeler radio coverage while following the game on NFL.com

  4. Bob,

This is an intereting read. I understand the difficulty of trying to quantify the improvement and appreciate the effort to do so. I notice you distinguish this as a non-heritage hypothesis. Obviously the original post is regardings Fortes but the implication is that the hypothesis would differ with a heritage crossover. Would you please venture a heritage hypothesis as well?

    Many thanks,

    Mike

  5. Yes, and to me, it's a very significant improvement.

For music, I'm running a Paradigm PS1000. After a lot of experientation, I'm running a full range signal to both the Belle's and the sub with the sub's crossover at 100hz. The sub output level is quite low but I vary it a bit based on source material.

For HT, I send a full range signal to the Belles and I have a Klipsch SW-12 feeding off the LFE channel crossing over at 60hz.

To be honest, individual tastes and rooms vary so much I doubt this kind of feedback is of much use but I expect most would agree that Belles (and LaScalas) benefit greatly from a little help on the low end.

  6. My perspective, having owned one for about 6 years, had most of the problems, read all the threads, is that the only real solution, and probably least expensive in the long run in terms of time and money, is to get away from the amp and it's issues. As someone told me once, "You can't polish a turd".

I've recently, with a little dealing, bought a new Yamaha RX-V365 receiver and Paradigm PDR-8 sub for $330. It sounds significantly better than the original system and hopefully I will continue to enjoy Klipsch satellites for many years to come.

Having said that, best of luck to your efforts and this thread.

  7. Hi Mark,

I was hoping to hear these and try for fit before I buy but my local Klipsch dealer doesn't have them.Confidence is high anyway based on reviews and all my past experience with Klipsch products (except that Bash amp). Do you know when they'll be available again online?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  8. Your mention of Stereo Review brings back memories--spent many an hour pouring over my dad's copies back in the late 60's - early 70s, getting some education and lusting after this and that in the mag.

I started out with some hand-me-down EVs. The first speakers I bought myself were Advents when I was about 15. I stumbled accross some Cornwall demos ($800 in RB) when I was around 20 ('75). Heard 'em, bought 'em. I just replaced them with Belles a few months ago. Interestingly, the Bells were $800 too--well $900 with the SW12. [:D]
