  1. I was trying to get an impression of the corner to reproduce, but it fell through. I started to work on a Google Sketch rendering to take to a machine shop. I had talked to them informally and had the impression that they could be reproduced at a price that would be affordable and resellable. They didn't flinch at the price per that I suggested, so I was hopeful. Life just caught up and I've been busy at other ventures. Someday, someone will put it all together.

  2. Playing "keep up with the Jones' " can be dangerous[:D] I think you were looking at the Quintets if I got to the right page you were referencing. I have them in my kitchen/family room and with a sub-woofer (absolutely get one), I'm pretty happy with them in that setting (I'm lucky to have a dedicated HT also). The back of the room (I assume the kitchen) is not as critical as the front. You also do not have a dedicated theater, so concede that it won't meet your brother's criteria. Many times the breakup of the waves in the rear is welcome. Just go with it.

Find a receiver/amp, disk player first is my recommendation. Buy quality, but last year's model and save a bundle. If a TV is in that budget then I really recommend finding the Quintets on ebay used. I got mine there and they were less than 1/2 retail. For a family room setting, I think $1500 will still get you a room that you will enjoy. The Quintets will always re-sale, so you can re-engage the neighbor arms race at a convenient time.

  3. That idea got rejected by the future Wifey....... Surprise

That's how it starts. Pretty soon you'll have those cute little cubes in your living room instead of those big ugly speakersStick out tongue

Too funny. That's how I ended up with Quintet IIIs upstairs.[8-)] Fortunately the Lascalas live downstairs in the HT now.[:D]

  4. I actually regretted having to bid early, but I'm generally commutting about the time the three ended. As it turned out I was just getting home as it ended and I doubt if my bid would have been much different.

I didn't think of screwing a forum member out of a decent price, so you have a good point there. It's just the nature of ebay.

Good luck on your project. I'm sure you'll keep us posted.

  5. It would have been good to somehow communicate and save one of us some money[H] I posted my maximum bid and I guess you slowly walked your way up. I've got a pair of Lascala tops that I want to build bottoms for, but from what you're saying the 44s may not be the best solution. Thanks for the reply.

  6. After you guys hooplahhing the vinyl all these years I played some recently and it really sucked big time bad. 12 db of bass missing, high frequency transients missing, multiple clicks, scratches, pops, wow and flutter, high frequency hiss at loud levels, and sounds like a Bose system.

Are you sure you didn't have a dbx recording without using a dbx decoder???[;)]
  7. ME!!!. Still use my Technics TT and just re-acquired a DBX pre-amp for the dozen or so DBX recorded albums I have. Also, I'm in the finishing stages of my HT and built 3 new shelves to house my records. Most had been in storage for 12 or more years. What's old is new again.

  8. Anybody remember the short lived series "Space: Above and Beyond". Maybe it was mentioned. It was real graphic in the depiction of battlefield death and dying. I remember just having been married and both my new wife and her mother were appalled by how painful it was to watch. Pretty hard stuff for TV.

  9. "what we really want is the pounding action and violence of a teeth-gritting war movie. We want “can’t take your eyes away” portrayals of glory, courage, pain and gore. We want sub-woofers to thump our chairs like mortar shells on Omaha beach, shake our walls like a firing range. We want to watch war movies. Here are my favorite, all-time best, “make no apologies, war is about killing” movies"

Based on the OP quote, there are many movies suggested here that don't make that grade.

  10. watching HBO's "Band of Brothers," which is interesting, but this movie is not in the top notch league...

Really??? I'd be interested in your criteria. I think that the character development was excellent, the detailed look at particular situations such as the artillary barrage, and the unique film style of the action scenes all made for an excellent series.

I would argue that some of the 'war movies' mentioned are borderline as far as 'war' goes. But scifi action is very engaging and I guess does meet some minimum criteria. The OP inclusion of The Postman comes to mind. This is more a post apocalyptic movie. Spy movies are also somewhat borderline in my opinion. YMMV.
