  1. Derek, I have agreed that stereo mode is far superior, but I recently got a Denon, and that 5.1 stereo mode is pretty awesome. I like it BETTER than 2 channel stereo. T-man
  2. BobG, That is very interesting information. It helps to explain a few things. Is that "flattened" curve also true of the KSW-12's crossover, or just the denon? Are you saying to set the crossover as high as possible on the sub where it doesn't annoy me? Also, I'm a bit confused about the LFE comment you left, as this is an area of deep (no punn) concern for me. If I set the subs crossover at say...80-90 hz, will I be missing something in the .1 LFE channel, or will it be routed in some way to the mains? I have all speaks set to "small". Thanks, T-man
  3. The KSW-15 has a different connection than KSW-12, so you really can't compare them. As far as my connection, I have a sub cable with the mono end plugged into the sub-out of the reciever. The cable then splites into a y, and I have both hooked up to the line level inputs on my sub. Everything sounds great, but I want to make sure I'm not missing info by not cranking my subs crossever to 120. I don't like amplifying high bass at the same volume as the lower stuff. Thanks, T-man
  4. Just got my system upgraded from Pro-Logic. Now have the following: Denon AVR-1601/681 KG 3.2 (mains) KV-2 (center) KG 1 (rears) KSW-12 Now I've read every post on this bass management issue, and searched the web and denon's tech support. They (denon) STRONGLY recommend setting all speaks to "small", unless you have HUGE mains. I've been tweeking for days, and figure this to be the best sound as well with my KG 3.2s - despite what others are recommending on this site - including denon's owners manual. My question is that if the reciever supposedly cuts off the frequencies under 80hz to the sub only (nowhere does is this mentioned "explicitly" in the manual. One can only guess based on their statement about speaks being able to handle below 80 htz), and the rest of the frequencies are handled by the speakers, how do I set my crossover on the sub? I don't want to lose LFE, but I don't want to have high frequency muddy bass that sounds terrible when I turn up the sub. I'd like to set it around 80 and leave it, as I get the best sound for music, but am I possibly missing something by not cranking it to 120 for HT, namely LFE data? In theory, the reciever's crossover should not put frequencies greater than 80 hz into the sub, but when I play with the subs crossover dial, I get more higher, annoying bass as I turn the dial past 80, all the way to 120. This doesn't seem right?? I have it hooked up via the sub RCA out and y spliter. No speaker wires into the sub, b/c I want to control the sub from the remote. Why is my sub still getting Bass above 80hz? Thanks, T-man

  6. My woofer recently starting making "farting" sounds when played at higher volumes. When I examined it, it appears that air is leaking through a small portion between the dustcap and the cone where it is possible that some glue gave way. Is this possible? Would a gap in this area affect the air sound, or do I also likely have a leak somewhere else, like probably near the voice coil. The speaker still works, just at higher volumes causes the problem. Is this repairable, or do I just have to cough up the $80 and order a new one? Thanks, T-man
  7. Boa12, Interesting you should ask, and phrase it so. Considering you have a Sony, you sure seem to want a Denon. I still have that Sony 1011S, but just put it on Ebay. I originally picked up the Sony STr-de845, but the same day I hooked it up the distortion melted the glue around the voice coil and popped the woofer on my 3.2s. I was so pissed. Probably a fluke, but be carefull when watch Stargate DVD, particularly the alien space-ship landing sceen. I since swore off the Sony line and got that Denon for a cheaper price ($300 at Sears. It's actually the avr-681, but that's just the "specialty nameplate" for the 1601, or so I was told by the tech at Denon. I figure that this is a much better set-up for my efficient Klipsch system. I should recieve the Sub later this week (which was I was wondering how to set it up), as well as a matched center speaker (KV2) early next week thanks to "Talktokeith". Later, T-man
  8. Boa12, Thanks so much for your feedback. I appreciate your time. I'll post back to let you all know in a few days. Troy
  9. Only the LFE? When I watch a movie, I want more than just the LFE to be sent to the sub. Will I have to select small for my mains in order to do that? On the other hand, will my sub then be responsible for all the BASS all by itself? That's not ideal, really either, as I would like my sub to complement my main's, rather than take over all the tough duty.
  10. Boa12 Thanks for the reply. That is what I thought. It's just that there has been so much discussion about people not getting proper bass when using 2 channel stereo and pro-logic when hooked up without the high level inputs. I guess their recievers must be different. My one questions is that if I set my front speakers to "large", won't the sub only handle information going to the center and rear only, leaving my mains toting all the responsibility of handling the front channel Bass that's not included in the LFE.
  11. I've been reading all the past posts on how to properly connect a subwoofer to an HT reciever, and I've never been more confused in my life: Here's my setup: Denon AVR-1601 (has a sub out) KG 3.2 mains KSW-12 non-important center and rears What's the best way to hook up the sub to maximize home theater AND stereo music? I think all I need to do is hook up a RCA interconnect from the reciever's sub-out to the KSW-12's input via a Y-adapter. What advantage would there be in using the high-level inputs? Would I not get any subwoofer use in pro-logic and/or stereo CD without using the high-level inputs. Shouldn't my reciever manage this automatically? Is there a way to bypass or shut-off the subwoofers built in filter/crossover, so that it doesn't conflict with that of the reciever? I'm so confused.... Thanks for any help, Troy
  12. I think I need a KV1 or KV2 center to match up with my KG 3.2 mains. Any available for sale out there? Med oak finish would be better than black, but either is OK. I got my eyes on Ebay... Thanks, T-Man
  13. anybody know the difference between the KV1 and KV2? I noticed the tweeter was different , but how does this affect power and sound? I have KG 3.2s for mains. Could I go with the KV1? They sure seem to be cheaper than the going rate for a KV2. Anybody out there tried the SC-1 with a KG 3.2 or 3.5? I'd be interested in your comments. Thanks! Troy
  14. mdeneen, I don't know anybody who has that type of equip. The closest I could come would be a low powered Denon. In any event, how do you compare equip, if the stats don't indicate anything. Do you have to actually physically listen to each amp with your personal speakers? Forgive me, I'm no audiophile, and I'm new to this forum. I just want to know if this is a decent amp to keep, or if it's only worth 100-200 dollars to somebody who appreciates decent (not perfect) sound. Thanks, Troy
  15. I have been using a sony str-d1011s sony reciever with my KG 3.2s for 7 years now with great results. I recently upgraded to DD for my HT, but all the recievers out there under $1K had crappy THD specs. Here's what my manual says: 8-ohm load, 20-20K Hz, 120 WPC min RMS with no more than 0.04% THD from 250 milliwats. Now, is that kick-a** or what? I can't seem to touch those specs with a reciever today. I was going to sell this thing for $150, but it appears to me that I should consider keeping it as a designated STEREO amplifier. I've seen no display prettier than this 1011S, as it has very cool parametric EQ graphics. Too bad it has cheapo clip-type speaker terminals. My question is....Is this a good amp, or are these numbers rather misleading. Should I keep it, or try and sell it? It's MINT, without a scratch. BTW, I never had to get it to the half way mark before becomming frightened to death that the windows would break with my punny 3.2s. They rock!
  16. MM, I checked all those setting on the DVD player, and it's working correctly as you described. I'm curious as to what you had before you bought the SS-1's. How much of a difference did it really make. I'm forced to have my rears right next to the couch where I sit, b/c the couch is on the wall. I aim the speakers with a toe-in (aimed just about right at the front of my head. They are only about 2-4 feet from my face at times, so I can't really jack up the volume, or it's too much. That's why I'm wondering what benefit I would get from a speaker upgrade.
  17. PhilH, Thanks for your reply. My reciever is a Sony STR-de845. IT's all hooked up correctly, and I'm using coaxial connection as well as RCA to hook up my Toshiba 3109 DVD player. Does this help? I just don't see why I would need a large rear speaker set up, when all the bass can be transfered to the mains and/or sub. Why wouldn't I want to transfer the low frequencies, as they are non-directional anyway. Might as well let the biggest drivers take care of it. Incidently, I blew out (sort of) one of my 3.2s 2 days after hooking up the Sony. The glue came loose between the voice coil and cone on the active woofer, and was letting a gap of air in resulting in a farting sound. I can't believe this happened. The bass was not even bottoming out or clipping. Be carefull when playing the alien ship landing from Stargate (: I'm considering exchaning my reciever.
  18. Great forum. Just discovered, and well done! I have KG 3.2, SC-1 center, and not Klipsch rears I just upgraded to 5.1 DD, and still can't seem to figure out why my rear channel amp has 100W x 2. When I turn my mains off, I can hear my center and rears in isolation. There just doesn't seem to be much info going to the rears, even with DTS and DD DVDs. I got new monster cable, and have currently some Infinity SL10s back there (6 ohm). These speakers sound just fine as mains, relative to their size. However, they seem like overkill in the rear. These are small speakers. Why should I get $400 SS-1s, when it doesn't seem that much info is going back there. I've read how many of you have huge rear speaker set-ups, and I dont' understand the point of all this. Am I missing something??? Thanks for setting me straight, in advance.
