  1. I would normally suggest looking at the Yamaha CX-A5100, but the latest receiver release adds bass management down to 15 hz as well as a few other items. I would look at pairing the Yamaha RX-A3060 with an Emotiva XPA-5.
  2. Im having a bit of a problem getting the EQ on my UMC-1 properly setup. I know everyone has their own preference but would really like to know how you may have yours. From left to right my EQ settings are 5,5,5,5,5,4,4,3,3,4,4. If you currently have a UMC-1 please share how you currently have your system setup. Thanks!!!
  3. Im not sure what you mean by dancing around as I answered your question in the first two sentences in the above post.
  4. Thats a compounded question which I'm sure your well aware. As far as the direct pickup of video service you would be correct. But keep in mind the location is in an area where interference can be controlled. Can the typical residence be controlled in the same manner? In one word NO and I'm willing to bet you already knew this. Now let me ask you a question. Out of everything I have stated why is it that you keep going around the facts? My comments are in no way my own opinion. I am simply stating the facts of the industry. There are many homes that subscribe to both Cable and Satellite. I am glad they both exist as everyone wins. Cable has changed over the past 10 years and they know if they don't stay competitive it will be the end for them. They no longer have the mind set that there the only game in town. I can at least say that for my company. Millions of dollars have been invested and there gloves are on. Cable knows they need to offer every service there customers expect. Not to many company's can say that. If you read my post the point I was trying to make is Cable offers Video, Phone and Internet. How many company's can say that? Calling Cable outdated when they offer more services then the competition doesn't sound right to me.
  5. Phone over cable will still function as normal if your house loses power for up to 8 hrs. If the hard line loses power service will still function for up to 4 hrs. As far as all future services being wireless, I'm not so sure of that. One of the biggest issues with wireless is interference. The service is susceptible to everything else thats also being transmitted. Since Cable is a closed system it has less issues with interference. Cable can control whats getting into its system by having an active signal leakage program. The fault where foreign signal is getting in can be found and corrected. How can satellite control another source thats causing problems? We experienced a spike in our installs directly after our last snowstorm because of this very reason. Many customers said they were tired of losing service due to the weather. We didn't have one weather related outage during the entire storm. A closed system is also more secure than one thats wireless. Ask your local bank if they communicate over wireless or if its a secured connection. I know the answer as Banks are one of our largest customers. As far as VOD, DirectTv's own website states to connect the converter to either a wired or wireless internet connection. Connecting a phone line will do nothing to make VOD operate. I completely understand how both technologies work and know this as being a fact.
  6. I cant understand why anyone would think cable is outdated. Let me give a few examples on why I say this. When I order VOD over cable with in seconds my video of choice is playing. Since cable is a 2-way system all request come in and out over the same line. Satellite on the other hand requires broadband service (a separate fee and should be factored in as part of the total cost) for VOD to function and is only available on their high end boxes. In my area the slowest internet speeds offered through cable is 6MB but with speed boost consistently averages 15-19MB. Speeds then range all the way up to 100MB and has the capacity to go well beyond that. What internet speeds does your Satellite company offer? When compared to Phone, the highest DSL speeds in my area is 10MB, no comparison. Phone service over Cable has no long distance charges and includes all call features for one set fee. How much is phone through Satellite? Does your phone company charge long distance fees or extra for call features? Again these are only a few examples but I could easily continue on.
  7. Here are a few things to think about. 1. The next time you head off to work try counting how many poles you pass during your drive. For each pole cable is attached a yearly pole permit must be paid. In my system that is close to $10 per pole. 2. It currently cost close to $15,000 to build one mile of cable plant. Plant extensions are being built every day. Most are only a few pole spans but when there all added together the mileage adds up. 3. Active devices on the hard line require commercial power in order to operate. Do you groan when you pay your power bill? Now imagine paying the bill to power an average 2,000 mile cable plant. 4. We all like to have the latest and greatest as far as services go right? Cable has spent untold amounts of money upgrading there systems with fiber and new actives to increase bandwidth (most are now running 750MHz-1G). 5. When you call up your local cable company, what is the cost to get a truck into your driveway? That cost is currently $76 and is before anythings taken off the truck to install or service your residence. 6. Programming cost. ESPN for example charges $3 per subscriber and thats for 1 channel! 7. Customer Premise Equipment (CPE). DVR's, HD's, Digital boxes, Cable Cards, Modems, Gateways, HN cards,NIC cards(I'm sure I'm missing many more) are very expensive. To make a very long story short, there is a lot more to running a cable company then a lot of folks realize. I cant write in one paragraph everything that drives your bill up but as I stated before the profit per customer in no where near as high as a lot of folks believe.
  8. jacksonbart, I believe if you read over your original post you stated nothing directly against TW thus I have no reason to defend them. I am on the other hand disagreeing that after 4 months the box rental fees are strictly profit. You are entitled to your own opinion just remember if they differ from a known fact you tend to loose credibility. In this case I know your comment was incorrect as I work in the industry and deal with equipment cost on a daily basis. I also fully understand how cable company's make there profit. Most people are totally amazed when they are presented with facts of the industry. Profit per customer isn't nearly as great as you may think. But when you add the profit made from all paying customers together it starts to sound much better.
  9. jacksonbart, that simply is not a true statement. Many DVR's cost cable companys $5-600. There money is not made off the rental fee of the box, its made from the many advanced services there capable of offering.
  10. This is a great opportunity for someone to jump on a great sounding hard to come by processor. I absolutely love the UMC-1 mated to my RF-83's.
  11. Youthman, I was finally able to watch this late last night. All I can say is wow! Less than 5 minutes into the movie my wife looked over at me with a huge grin on her face. None of my 3 kids budged from there seats during the entire movie. If anyone is on the fence its definitely worth watching.
  12. My vote goes to the Emotiva UMC-1 and XPA-5. The question I kept asking myself was why go with a receiver when you can have seperates for the same price. You would also have enough power to really make the 83's shine.
  13. Youthman were on the same page! Hotel California is the very first song I listen to any time I get new gear. I will pick up "This Is It" on blueray tomorrow and will let you know what I think. Thanks man, now I'm not going to sleep very well as I'll be patiently waiting for morning to come lol!
  14. I was in your same situation just a few weeks ago. I was able to listen to the RF-63's but none of the dealers in my area had the RF-83's in stock. All though I really enjoyed the 63's I couldn't help but feel they were lacking on bass. I was however very impressed with there wide open sound stage and relatively small foot print. I came very close in making a purchase thinking I would simply add a sub to compliment them. Until 3 years ago I had a complete RF-7 HT system. I sold them to my brother in law due to buying a house and it needing many renovations. Ever since I sold them I always felt like there was something missing in my home. They played loud, they played hard and were excellent for both HT and music. Every time I thought about my old system I couldn't help but wonder what the RF-83's sounded like. I thought it over for a few days and decided I would order the 83's even though never hearing them. They are in one word AMAZING!! They are IMHO better then both the RF-7 and 63's. They sound incredible. The highs are a little laid back when compared to the 7's and have the bass I was looking for that the 63's were lacking. There is absolutely no need for a stand alone sub for music listening. I had rotel separates with my last system and planned to for this one as well. But during my research I kept coming across Emotiva. I only came across a few negative comments but read post after post of people being very pleased with there quality and cost. Many Klipsch owners feel Emotiva is "Klipsch friendly" so I decided to give them a try. I now have a UMC-1 paired with an XPA-5. This combination has me grinning ear to ear and I honestly think I will be content for many years to come (which is saying something all in its self). So If I were you and could afford the 83's I would with out hesitation go for them. You will not be disappointed.
