  1. As you all know, my external xoxers have Goertz inductors w/ Jensen PIO caps and this sounds like magic. Do the inductors make a difference? I don't know. But, I am not changing anything. This is with 300B SET. I still love you Al K. If you have Heritage and tubes this WORKS!
  2. Why not put Dynamat UNDER another layer of Baltic Birch and use molding at the edges? And put some strips of Dynamat on the splines of the woofer basket. Now, somebody gimme a Corona with a lime wedge!
  3. Dave, I used a 4.7 and an 8.2 in parallel. Scroll down in the caps on the website and the aluminum foil in oil are below the copper. The aluminum are for crossovers. They are excellent.
  4. JW, www.welbornelabs.com in the parts section. I put 12.9uf on the squawker and the results are stunning. I have solen caps on the woofer as the cost of the Jensens would be too much for me. Use a single 3.3uf on the tweet and enjoy the magic.
  5. Ray, Huh? 6db slope, single 3.5uf cap on tweeter branch, stock AL3 values on rest of xover. Simple. Sounds wonderful with Jensen caps and SET. Stock on tweet was 18 or 24 db slope.
  6. I had an AL3 network and went with a 6 db slope on the tweeter. The notes come from dark space and disappear into a black hole.
  7. Here is the deal for Horn Heads with triodes. Build external crossovers with Al K's autoformer, use Goertz foil inductors on the woofer and squawker with Jensen aluminum foil in oil caps, these are expressly for xovers but shoud be external to eliminate microphonics, 12.9uf on squawker, 3.3uf on tweet and 136uf of Solen fast caps on woofer. Rewire internally with whatever you like, put on a diaper and see just how GREAT the Heritage series can be. Above values apply to La Scalas. Takes a couple hundred hours for them to really blossom and I promise you will be the envy of all audio heads. These blow the Hovlands away with SET, probably PP tubes too. It is ALL there, I have NEVER heard anything I can afford sound better. Just the facts folks. I will try to post a photo. PLLLEASE try it. This is the missing link to the Sonic Holy Grail with horns and SET. Don't blame me if you get fired cause you won't leave the sweet spot! Avantegarde at 15 to 30K, No way. This will cost right near $500 and it is the best upgrade/tweak you will ever do, along with horn damping. This is THE source of TRIODE CREAM! You can touch the performers. Add K43KP woofers and you will never sell your Scalas. CAP VALUES DEPEND ON YOU DRIVERS, EXCEPT TWEETER. ELIMINATE EVERYTHING IN THIS BRANCH AND USE ONLY A 3.3 CAP. NOW YOU KNOW WHAT TO SPEND YOUR TAX REFUND ON.
  8. I have a mess of these, 2(6.0uf) 2(7.0uf) 2(3.3uf) 4(2.0uf) that I will sell for half price. They have maybe 100 hours on them. I used Jensen aluminum foil in oil instead, which for me was the best choice for SET. others here like Hovland Musicaps in crossovers so here is a chance to get some cheap. E-mail me if interested.
  9. Very cool Bob, I will get someone to scan a photo of my homebrew crossovers and post them to the board. Les
  10. The xovers are cooking, the difference between stock and Goertz inductors, Hovland, and Solen caps is incredible. I will let them burn in for about 30 hours. I have Patricia Barber, Companion CD going. It is a live jazz album that has an excellent performance and exceptional sonics. You can see and fell as YOU ARE THERE. It was worth it. Removing the xover from the cabinet and isolating it from vibration along with the upgraded components equals sonic bliss. This is the way to find out how good your system sounds. You get goosebumps and do not want to go to work. I am finished. The point of diminishing returns has been reached. Yeah, the Sonic Finish Line for me! If you do this you will not be sorry.
  11. Peter, I will let you know soon. I removed the stock xover from the cabinet and placed them on sorbothane on top of the cabinet. The result was an immediate increase in detail and clarity. It is NOT SUBTLE,vibration inside the cabinet affects the sound. Listening is more accurate than theory.Do yourself a favor. Rewire your La Scalas with your favorite spaghetti, leave the wires long enough to set the xover on top of the speaker, isolate it from vibration, put on some adult pampers and see for yourself. It is like AMAZING!!!!!!! I am going to put mine in birch boxes. JUST DO IT!!!!!!! Not being super technical, the large slope on the tweet branch may emphasize the time alignment delta. Walt Koch went to a 3.5uf single cap on his Khorn tweet branch and loves it. I am picking up my xovers today.
  12. Peter, The xover will be the AL3, with the tweeter branch having only the 3.3uf cap. The squawker has a 5MH choke and 13uf caps, woofer 4MH choke and 68uf caps.
  13. Hi Peter, Filmofreddy said PWK had 'em like this for years. At 104dbw I seriously doubt I will puff a tweet. Also, I may put a very low uf paper in oil bypass cap on the tweet. It is supposed to be 3.5uf.
  14. I am starting this again as my new crossovers will be finished tomorrow. They are the AL3's with a single 3.3uf cap in the tweeter branch. The rest of the xover is stock and the autoformer was retained. The inductors are Goertz foil air core, all caps on tweet and mid are Hovland Musicaps, Solen fast caps on the woofer. 14AWG silver plated multistranded copper wire was used.I had a local guitar amp builder assemble them. I was not confident enough to do it. They are going to be placed outside the speaker enclosure in Baltic Birch boxes to minimize vibration. The rubber is about to meet the road. Hope I don't have a blow out! I would like to post a photo and need how to advice. Remember, I am using 8 watt amps and am willing to leave the tweeter 'unprotected'.
  15. Check out the Foreplay Preamp Kit at www.bottlehead.com for under $200 you can build a darn good unit. Parts quality and circuit design are here at a low price. JMHO
  16. Hi HMS, I am using Cary 300SE's flea powered 8 watts, Meridian 506 CD upgraded to 24 bit and a Joule Electra MKIII tube pre with 8db of gain and my system is dead quiet. This low gain with a 5751 tube is very nice with Klipsch. The gain is user changeable. The Joule MKIII is a VERY good tube pre. Check it out. JMHO, as they say, your mileage may vary. www.audiogon.com has lots of used high end gear. If you find a Joule MKII it can be upgraded to a MKIII. This is what I did. I've had this pre for 5 years. Do change the internal wiring of your speakers. It does lift a veil of 'fog'.
  17. The K43 woofers arrived yesterday. The basket needs to be filed a bit on the edges to fit in the woofer chamber. I will see how the new units sound and how the cabinets fare and consider additional damping.
  18. Walt, What are you driving your horns with? I have La Scalas an am getting ready to rewire them. Is the Cardas wire stranded or solid core? I think that this is another mod that is overlooked.
  19. The La Scala woofers are rear firing. Would it make sense to put some dynamat on the rear of the cabinet and cover the dmat with another piece of plywood? Any other ideas?
  20. Thanks Filmofreddy, I am omitting this from the crossover. It finally makes sense, thick scull. Had to send the pre amp off so the try out will have to wait. Hope it sounds good.
  21. Question for one who knows more than I. Bob G., is this elliptical filter merely the 125 inductor and a 2uf cap in the tweeter circuit? If so, I do not want to install it when I completed the new crossovers. Help!
  22. JW, That is it the kLip ckt. Say bye bye and you will smile. Looks like a short cigar with a diode and is on metal brackets.
  23. Sorry, It is in series with the caps. I should read these B4 I post.
  24. Guys, Look at the tweeter caps. There is an assembly, a diode etc. on the AL3, that is parallel with the caps. Desolder the end that is toward the front of the speaker and run it to the tweeter terminal on the rear of the barrier strip. There is a spade lug on this terminal that you move out of the way.It comes from the rear of the filter. It is a visual thing. Look at the caps and it becomes self evident. It is instantly reversable. The assembly is the tweet protection, elliptical filter? or whatever. The highs became better, less edgy on my system. If this does not help, it is time for Filmofreddy to step up to the plate.
  25. Hi all, The Dynamat and rope caulk made a very noticeable difference on my metal squawkers and tweets.I installed the latest tweets, mid drivers and AL3 x-overs some time ago. I bypassed the polyswitch on the tweeter and this was an immediate improvement. This was easy to do and as JWG sez, try it you will like it. The sound overall is much smoother and more detailed.
