  1. I think its pretty simple really. How many concerts have you been to where the music is coming from behind you?

I'm an old school guy. I started listening to music in the late 60's/early 70's. Back then music was played back in 2 channels. Analog (radio, records and tapes) was all that was available to you, and its what my ears got used to. I like the convenience of popping in a cd in my car, or hooking up my ipod, but when I am at home I only listend to vinyl, and only in 2-ch. When the system has great synergy it is absolutely magical!

  2. I replaced a pair of Epic CF-2's that I bought brand new in 1995 with a pair of minty black Chorus I's in late 2001 ($750). I loved that pair of Chorus I's and used them as my mains until 2004. In 2002 I bought some Chorus II's to be my mains, but actually preferred the Chorus I's, and the II's ended up doing surround duty. In 2004 I bought some La Scala's (now owned by CECAA850) which relegated my Chorus I's to the rear, and sold off the Chorus II's. In 2010 I bought some Cornwall II's to be my rears and sold the Chorus I's to Clermont Cop, but to be honest I preferred the Chorus I's and still miss them today. In 2011 I sold the Cornwall II's and replaced them with Tineo Heresy's (now in the bedroom) to match my Khorns until I bought jhoaks Cornscalas. In 2009 I replaced the La Scala mains with what is still there today, my beloved Khorns, restored beautifully by Greg Roberts.

The Chorus I's are a great speaker, and was my first introduction to the Heritage arena. I know, they are not technically known as Heritage speakers, but after hearing them I knew right then and there that was the kind of sound I was looking for. Since owning them I have gone on to buy (and sell) many different pairs of Heritage speakers, and they rank right below the Khorns and La Scala's in the pecking order.

  3. Thanks, I've got one already. If you're in D/FW, drop by.

What table/arm/cart are you using? I see no sources in your profile.

Perhaps if you list the last 10 records that you've listened to (real life), we can discover why you might have a different opinion: my music preferences are in my profile, arranged by most preferred genres first.

Not sure that matters when pretty much all of my remastered vinyl sounds better than any of my CD's/SACD's, but I'll play along. Here is a list of lp's that I have had in rotation of late:

Rickie Lee Jones - Pop Pop (Alto AA008)

Paul Simon - Graceland (Legacy 180 gm)

Hugh Masekela - Hope (Analogue Productions 45)

Richie Cole and... - Return to Alto Acres (Palo Alto Records)

Miles Davis Sextet - Someday my Prince Will Come (Analogue Productions 45)

Rickie Lee Jones - it's like this (Analogue Productions 45)

Rimsky-Korsakoff's Scheherazade - Reiner Chicago Symphony (Classic Records 200 gm)

Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow (Original Epic pressing)

Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker - I've got the Music in me (Sheffield Labs)

All of it sounds amazing, btw!

  4. Most of the audiophile albums being remastered today sound miles better than any redbook CD or SACD that I own, as well as remastered CD's

We must listen to different music. I'll agree to disagree. CDs have always sounded better to me. That's the reason given why the CD format survived (much better sound) and thrived in the 80s when virtually all the big record execs were trying to kill the format:

see http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1416552154/, chapter 1 for a better discussion.

    Chris

I need no discussion to know which sounds better. If you're ever in the Central Florida area look me up. Bring your best digital recordings with you. For that matter bring your source as well. You'll get a chance to see what a very good, well setup vinyl rig can sound like. You might even like it. ;-)

  5. To my ears its not even close!

I have had some very good digital sources in my system over the years, including some very good DAC's, as well as very good redbook CD players (Naim CD5x comes to mind), and they don't even come close to my vinyl rig, which is basically comprised of 30 - 50 year old equipment (turntable, tonearm and cartridge).

Most of the audiophile albums being remastered today sound miles better than any redbook CD or SACD that I own, as well as remastered CD's (XRCD, Mofi, etc), of which I own many. DVD-Audio gets very close, but all of the other formats are lacking in clarity, detail and dynamics, and most of all realism!

This is just one mans opinion of course (since we're all sharing that), but on my system it is quite apparent which format outshines the other.

  6. Mike!, I ordered this from Amazon along with a few others and I truly believe this is the best sounding Blu-Ray I have ever heard. I love how everything sounds ie drums vs guitars etc. I am truly able to push my RF-7s and let the 400x7 Sunfire amp put in some good work lol. Thanks for mentioing this!!!

I assume you are referring to the Toto "Falling in Between Live" Blu-Ray? If so, in total agreement. I own most of the others mentioned here, Eagles Live in Melbourne BR, Eagles HFO DVD, Dave Matthews BR, HOF BR, Gilmour, Waters, yada, yada, yada. This one kicks it up a notch imho!

  7. Mike that is not the way it was . I only 2 people that got THE price and the first guy bailed because he wanted me to hold them for 2 months without paying for them . The second guy bought them .

Not a problem. I guess I just feel if you are selling something here, you know what you want for them and that's the price you ask for in the ad. If it doesn't sell then you might reduce your price or you wait for the market to turn around.

Regardless, no big deal. If the price was right I would have probably jumped on them.

  8. Just stopped in boys because I could feel the love in the airWink Did you ever say (tell Mike) how much those 402's wereSurprise LOL

Nope! I was interested for a possible future project, but really didn't want to do the deal thru PM. I wasn't aware that you didn't have to post a price with a for sale ad on this forum. For some reason I thought you had to. Regardless, I will only deal with items that have a posted price. Otherwise, you might as well list it on eBay and sell it to the highest bidder.

  9. No update since November. Where are you with this? Like Hollow, I use the Dayton SA-1000 in my bedroom Heresy system, driving a Tuba HTLP. Talk about overkill! That amp/sub is sick!

  10. You are in for a great experience with the SB-13 Ultra from SVS. I received mine the last week of December, and my first response after setting them up was WOW! Even my wife was pleased with the improvement they brought to our Music and Home Theater. The gentleman at SVS were a pleasure to work with prior and after the sale.

I have never owned a sub woofer before, and was concern that they would be similiar to the expierence of stting in traffic, and having a car three or so away shaking my car. As well as just being loud, plus unable to distinguish the words or instruments in the song. Jack walked me through that fear and explained the difference of what I was purchasing. I am at the stage in life that I didn't want to play with different subs, rather wanted to attempt to get the right one the first time. Jack did originally suggest a less expense option for me, but after reading reviews, and asking a few members on the Klipsch Forum. I decided to spend more than I had originally budgeted, and i am glad that I did.

The sound they added to my system exceed all expectations. Whether it was Blu-Ray, Netflix down streamig, Cable/TV, to my music collection. Everything sounded richer and more life like. I do admit I am rewatching several movies as they have been suggested to have great bass effects. Open to all suggestions of what folks have enjoyed. BTW my room is 14' X 23' and I only bought one subwoofer, I feel more than one would be over the top for this size room, SVS agreed.

Must admit I was playing a little louder than I normally do, and my wife had gone to bed earlier. She came running in at one point and asked if I had checked to see if the tree she thought she heard fall had hit the house. And when had the storm begin, note it was a clear, quiet night, except for our new sub woofer.

Lastly the SB-13 Ultra, is smaller, which made it eaiser for us to fit into our room. Enjoy, you've made a great decision. All the best, Jeff

    Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. My room is smaller than yours by the way (18' x 15' but opens on one side to the kitchen), but I wanted 2 subs to smooth out the room response, as well as provide the same level of output with 1/2 the effort. I'm surprised SVS said you didn't need a 2nd sub for that size of room.

  11. Any experience with the new SB-13 Ultra? I am considering getting a pair of these for my room, to be shared by both my HT and 2-ch systems. I listen to music about 75% of the time in this room and wanted something that could handle both applications well. The reviews are very strong on this sub. The size is perfect, as I have about 20" of width on both sides of my 6' rack, and they are beautiful subs as well in gloss black. They are also about half the cost of the JL Audio Fathom F-113, which is what I was considering previously.

    Mike

    Hey Mike,

I don't have any experience with the SB13-Ultra. The PC13-Ultra is my first sub from them. All I can say is that you won't be disappointed with that driver or amp.

    Scott

I have a 20-39 CSi that I bought 12 years ago and power it with a Samson amp. Back in the day it was a pretty good sub, but it doesn't compete with today's subs. I got a great deal with a local dealer on a pair of the SB-13 Ultra's so went ahead and ordered them. Will update after I get them setup and dialed in.

  13. If you are looking for amazing sound, look no further than Toto's "Falling In Between Live" Blue-ray. You won't be too familiar with half of the music (from the same titled LP) but it will blow you away! Steve Lukather has to be one of the most underrated guitarists on the planet, and Simon Phillips on drums is other worldly on this Blue-ray.

I won't steer you wrong on this one boys...
