  1. Yeah ok. I was thinking something like that might happen. After I posted this, I got to thinking. Speakers don't emit perfect waves; perfect being defined as waves that will position to one point. I figured the sound waves not traveling in the "perfect" direction would run into each other. My only question after that would have been whether or not waves hitting from the sides would cancel. But that was answered by my swimming pool. If you make two different waves with your hands and push them diagonally towards each other, they still cancel out. But, yeah, anyways, question answered. Thanks Jim. 2. Yeah huh. Sure DwK... and when you get that much money, let me know. Oh you who are jealous of my soon to be RF3s...
  3. I'm curious. I was talking to DwK the other day about a new setup he designed. He said someone told him having 4 subs in a square room wouldn't be good because the sound waves each projected would cancel each other out, which makes a ton of sense. However, my question is, if you're sitting in the very center of the room and the subs are hypothetically positioned perfectly towards you, then why wouldn't the sound waves be hitting you for the most part before depleating each other? Wouldn't the depleation (if any?) take place after you heard the sound? Maybe I'm just odd... This message has been edited by Jo-Jo on 07-12-2001 at 01:14 PM
  4. I'm going to laugh now if no one replys to this. I'm just going to say that personally, I'm an RF3 gal. I heard the RF5s and I didn't see that much difference worth spending the extra cash. I heard the RF7s last weekend, and I wasn't real thrilled either. Sure, they're better speakers, but I'm all about hearing good sound for cheaper expenses. Maybe after they've been out a while and don't cost as much... This message has been edited by Jo-Jo on 07-12-2001 at 01:05 PM
  5. Yeah, RF3s would definately be my choice- personal favorite. Not really sure what to tell you about centers and recievers cause I'm still a newbie, but I highly recommend Velodyne subs, if you don't have much of a budget. Tool would sound really awesome with one of the HGS series.
  6. Yeah... My name is Jo-Jo, and I'm a Klipsch-a-holic. Heh, yeah, I'm a recent convert. My dad thought Fishers were good way back when, but at least he knows that Bose suck! That's a plus, right? I think my friend that DwK was talking about is just being overprotective. His daddy got his system discount b/c he had a friend that was like CEO of Tweeter or something, I dunno. He's also proud of his little 12' sub. It's funny, but it's cute. It reminds me of a little kid saying "look at my toy!"
  7. Tom, you give some very good advice. I have no intention on going out and purchasing all the top-of the line equipment. 1) I don't have the money, 2) That'd be somewhat silly at this point I think. Just questions for future reference. I'm going to wait on the reciever anyways. When I do upgrade, I don't want to be one of those suckers that go into stores, ask what's good, and end up going home with Bose ("Ice cube trays" as DwK would say). I actually have enough to buy my RF3s off SoundDistributors.com, the only question is do I buy now, or later? HornEd, I'm glad I sparked some interest, I'm into odd science, so I imagine there's more to come. You could say I'm self-determined in many ways; that would be accurate. When it comes to Klipsch, I'm just amazed. I've been a music lover for so long, I just had no idea that the sound I was hearing was so distorted until I did some comparisons. I've heard Fishers, Paradigms, etc. even the electrostatics DwK was talking about at one point (Martin Logans?). But the Klipsch sound is so full and clear- just what I want in a speaker. My horizons have been brightened I guess you could say. And all I can say to DwK is that yeah ok, I've been asimilated into the Klipsch family or whatever, but you're still crazy... I'm not the one that wants to spend $25,000 on their system. No thanks. Besides, if that ever really does happen, I'll just come over and listen at your house for free!

Well, I'm not sure how much money you'll have left after your speakers to spend, or whether or not these are even available, but might I suggest a Velodyne subwoofer? I'm all about Klipsch, but a small Velodyne could probably match the sound of a larger Klipsch, if you're having a space issue. Check out the HGS series at www.velodyne.com
  9. My opinion would be the one typically given to me since I joined. Listen to them. See which sounds better to you, regardless of the price. Personally, I'm a fan of the RF3s. I heard the RF7s today, and I'd save the money. The RF3s are good speakers; if you bought them you'd have the extra cash- probably enought to buy another decent set of speakers on ebay or something.
  10. Wow! maxg- Let me know how the Belle/marble stuff works out. Any hypothesis as to whether or not different kinds of marble would insulate better? Maybe I'm adding more complicated questions... HornEd- You're great. That was a funny story about the girl and the Greek village, but did it really happen? the borg- I think the RF3s are what I'm going to go for right now, but thanks for the link. You may have offered me a means to my first Klipsch! This message has been edited by Jo-Jo on 07-08-2001 at 12:19 AM
  11. I think DwK liked it cause of the showgirls... DwK>> He he. I didn't mind the movie so much after it got started, but I think the whole book/"writing our story" thing was kinda cheesy.
  12. I just saw the movie on the fourth of July. While I thought the general story line was kinda interesting, might I inquire about what made you think it was so great?
  13. djk: You said these Radio Shack speakers sounded different, and had "tremendous amounts of intermodulation." Did they sound bad? How long ago was this?
  14. If anyone knows of theaters that use Klipsch speakers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I'd be interested to know. I'd be curious to watch a good action movie and see the difference. As far as I know, none of the theaters around here use Klipsch.
  15. Well, I'm definitely going to look into better equipment down the road; that's a given. I was just curious as to whether or not RF3s would work, or if my sterio was too weak to power them or something. I'm going to build up my system over time because even though I'm getting a second job, there are always inevitable bills to pay and whatnot. No Home Theater connection was mentioned because there is none/no reason. I threw away my old TV, and I've found that I really didn't use it all that much. Without a TV, there is no point of a VCR, and I need to upgrade my second computer that's in my room, before I do anything else with it. I guess this only leaves two other quesitons. 1) Who makes the most decent recievers, and 2) Why is maxg "sheathing" his speakers in Grecian marble? 16. Alright... last Saturday I paid a visit to a Hillcrest audio store with DwK (as posted somewhere else). I listened to some Klipsch there as well as some ?Paradigms?... Looking at smaller speakers to go with my room and lacking sterio system, I listened to the SB3s and the RF3s... I fell in love with the RF3s, personally, so now I want to know, if I can get my hands on a cheap pair of RF3s, do I need to look into a reciever too, or will they work alright for easy listening on my RCA system?
  17. What do average electrostatics go for?
  18. To tell the truth, I'm not much interested in the plasma speakers... lots of downsides as many have pointed out already. Yesterday, DwK pointed out some electrostatic speakers after hearing the Velodyne subwoofer and the RF3s, but it was on our way out. I'd really like to know more about the actual flame speakers, and the electrostatics. Downsides to them? I find it odd that only "apocryphal tales" have been told of these speakers if they're so old...
  19. I don't get it... Bose sucks right? This guy admitted this to our faces... my first question is why do people buy these things just cause they here about them on the radio and whatnot... why don't they want to look for something better? Secondly, what's with the cube thing anyways? "Look, I'm going to buy these cute little speakers that suck, why? ...because they're Bose... I know their name." That's like saying that clouds are made out of marshmellows just because your kindergarden teacher had to make up something that a 6 year-old mind could handle. Sooner or later you have to grow up. Down with "ice cube trays!" This message has been edited by Jo-Jo on 06-30-2001 at 11:10 PM
  20. He speaks the truth... I was there. While I haven't been into speakers very long, I LOVED bass for awhile, and these were very nice quality- very clear- no distortion- again, very nice. Anyone wanna sell one for cheap? Heh, no, I doubt you're THAT kind...
  21. By the way, DwK... In case you were wondering, I did finally fix the dang thing today- after a few hours spent last night, and dismantling the whole thing. When it fell, one of the gears came out of alignment.
  22. Okay, this is sorta a mixed reply... I took my better pair of crappy speakers (they're "all frequency" speakers) to DwK's house last night. We compared them to his Hereseys and then to a pair of small Fishers he had. Mine beat out the Fishers, but I was in awe, I guess, of the Klipsch. Very nice... (as if I didn't know that...) My speakers are the typical generalized kind- they came with my sterio. Any speakers I have are going to be hooked up to it until I replace it as well. It's a 120V system, but it's actually pretty decent for what I want. Music... depends, I don't listen to a whole lot of heavy stuff anymore, but I guess to give you an idea, I listen to stuff anywhere from Metallica to The Beatles. Also, before you doubt my sterio and all, I'm looking for sound quality- clear sound, not something to annoy my neighbors with. I don't really like insanely loud music unless I'm moving around the house. My room is approx. 12x12, give or take a few inches.
  23. Ok Ray, I'm getting back to all the questions you had earlier... Sorry it took awhile, but I had to translate first I'm going to go line-by-line. 1) "isn't there a problem with the phase conherence of the wavefront propagation as the flame rises above the combustion nexus?" Assuming you mean frequencies that would bounce back and forth to cause interference, what would they bounce off of? The ion charges push the air to produce the sound- just like an electrostatic speaker. 2) "I mean, it would seem intuitively obvious that as the flame cools, and the ion / electron clouds begin to coalesce into a neutral diatomic or molecular state (depending upon the gas used, I suppose), the force applied to the flamefront, and hence the acceleration of the charged gas, will be non-linear and tend towards a chaotic distribution, which would impair the system's (otherwise excellent) minumum phase amplitude response." What I'm told is that it is non-linear: it's audio which means acoustic in the general sense. 3) "This, in turn, would result in "time-smearing" of the signal" Basically... huh? It doesn't matter. The signal drives the flame, and it takes a bit before you hear it anyway. What physics book did you get "time-smearing" from? 4) "...the degree of smearing, of course, being in direct proportion to the point density of the gas in the expansion chamber's throat cavity. I think. How'd he avoid that?" The point density is irrelevant as the frequencies modulate the entire envelope of the gas as one discrete multiple frequency signal that varies as determined by the complexity of the music. 5) "Oh, also, are they UL-approved for use in the US of A?" Actually, that's a question I'd like the answer to as well. They were mostly available between 1960 and 1970.
  24. Okay, I'm starting my second job soon, so I'm going to have some extra cash... I want to buy a pair of decent speakers (turning to Klipsch here). I don't want to spend a whole lot... say... not much over $1000- preferably a couple hundred. I know I can probably buy some off ebay cheap, but I'm not sure what to look for. I'd prefer floorstanding, but I'm open-minded. I don't really care about bass so much as I do just having a clear, full sound, and I don't care what they look like (size, shape, etc.) That could probably describe a lot, but I was hoping for some input, so I don't have to look at every single speaker this site offers. Suggestions? Favorites? This message has been edited by Jo-Jo on 06-26-2001 at 11:33 PM
  25. Doug... DwK... you monkeez... I actually would take Italian if it was offered, but who needs to take the class when you can find online translators, huh Doug? Ray, I'm just learning about these speakers too, but I'm working on a response. Something else I found out, going back to the plasma speakers... some people actually believe that the 'burning bush' was highly ionized plasma which was modulated to produce sound. So, while considered miraculous by masses, it could've been well understood by those in the 'arcane/occult' (hidden) sciences... the same thing is said about the Ark of the Covenant. There were supposedly two cherubim or seraphim- one on each side that faced each other to produce a standing wave in the middle consisting of high voltage ionized air which was modulated at audio rates It was also supposed to be a radio. Likewise, there were tons of arks in use in Persia and other countries at that time, but this one just happened to be consecrated to the Jews god Jehovah...
