  1. I found this, and it is very helpful. It is a speaker wire size calculator. http://www.bcae1.com/images/swfs/speakerwireselectorassistant.swf
  2. Hey, found this site which helps discern speaker wire size: http://www.bcae1.com/images/swfs/speakerwireselectorassistant.swf VERY revealing!
  3. OK. I just now hooked the multimeter to the speakers outs on the receiver, and I got a spike at about 25 volts AC. That being said, at lets say 100 watts, the receiver is capable of 110 WPC, we are talking about 4 amps. SF's chart starts at 10 amps. SF, you have a smaller chart in your bag of goodies?
  4. Your confusing amps with WPC, not even close, with 120 amps your speakers would burst into flames. Your whole house probably only has 200 amps going into it, and you never use all of that. dtel, you are on the right track, but most homes are 200 amps, and two legs at 120 volts AC. That's actually 400 amps. [:S] I am not confused, the chart SF attached is confusing, though. The chart looks like it would work for jumper cables, but how does that correspond to speakers? Isn't cable size determined by amps? I don't know where the heck I am supposed to find out how many amps my speakers are using. I do know how many watts, but without knowing the volts or amps, how do I know where to look on that chart? Speakers are AC voltage, I do know that. I know my La Scala's are rated at 100 watts rms. I can't seem to find the volts of amps of them, though. Tell me what my amps or volts are at the speakers, then I can use the chart; however, I wager most people's speakers would not require a 4 guage speakers wire for a 50' run.
  5. Is that chart right? I have La Scala speakers with something like 100' of 14ga coming from a receiver with 110WPC. According to the chart you are providing, 120W going only 50' would require an enormous 4ga wire! The copper alone would cost a fortune. Where did you get that chart?
  6. Carbon Bite? Fruedian slip?
  7. I have been using Jungledisk, and am satisfied, but I only have experience with one other internet backup company. I licence workgroup users, and pay for each. I definitely like having a copy of critical files stored somewhere far away. External drives are great for having a duplicate, but what if lightning strikes and fries the drive and the internal hd? What if house burns down, or tsunami, both drives gone.
  8. OK, I will. It's twice the power not twice the loudness. 3db is a small increment of increased loudness. Thank you once again Russ! Eventually I will get all this!
  9. Completely right about albums. I listen to them daily, and would be very upset if anybody took my turntable. Today I was listening to a 50+ year old Ray Charles that belongs to my dad. There is a sound exchange where I live, and I routinely buy records for 2-3 bucks. I like the static, and the realness of the sound.
  10. MANY people here have been recomending the Danley DTS-10 for bass. The danley DIY kit is $1,075 plus shipping, and you would need an AMP for it, but it would give you the bass you want, down to 10Hz, believe it or not. This technology is superior to the bass reflex, in that it will allow you to hear the notes at very high volume levels. Here is a link to the Danley sub: http://www.danleysoundlabs.com/tapped_horn.asp?MODEL=DTS%2010. You can buy a 1000 watt rms amp for this for about $350. The sub you have is capable of 114 dB SPL. The Danley is capable of 133 dB SPL. Correct me people if I am wrong, but each 3 dB is twice the SPL, right? Do the math.
  11. I think he passed the problem off to Roy, who I believe designed the KP-480 sub woofer for the LaScala. The LaScala sit's directly on top. Crossed over at 120hz. If you get these...I'd replace the caps used in the xovers from the electrolytic's to film/ I looked those up and ran across this post on a website called djforums.com. Here it is: [start quote from soundinmotiondj] 3 years ago I was using Klipsch KP-480's - 18" direct radiator in a 2ft cube on wheels. The weight was about 95-100 pounds, and the form factor was a pain to deal with. Now I use a BFM Titan 39 @ 14", they weight less than 50 pounds per box. The cabinet volume is about the same as the 2ft cube...but the form factor is much easier to deal with. The difference in sound quality is huge. The 18" direct made an impressive "boom" in the room. The folded horn removes the higher order harmonics from the sound...so the bass is much clearer and more articulate. The direct sounded louder in the garage (the worst of all possible listening environments), but with the folded horn you could actually hear the notes of music that were being played. Also, while building the Titans I learned that everything I thought I knew about speaker placement was wrong - and proper placement goes a long way in getting good sound. I would not go back to a direct radiator design at this point. [end quote] Interesting way of putting it. "BOOM IN THE ROOM' vs "HEAR THE NOTES". Also, notice how he says the garage is the worst of all possible environments?
  12. Thank you for summing it up. Part of my question was "what would Paul Klipsch do?" I bet he would go with a tapped horn sub. Those would cost roughly twice what the folded horn would but come in a kit, and aren't built from dimensional lumber. That comes down to labor costs. I am back to my first decision. I am buying the DTS-10's. From what I have read, even if I EQ, I will need 2 of them for the volume of space, and for my needs, which from time to time will be hip-hop. I don't listen to it, but I have 3 teenage sons, and they do from time to time. I THINK this problem is finally resolved! Thank you everyone...
  13. djk, I am not competent reading acoustic graphs, but it looks like the THT stuff isn't really that great in the sub range. Do you have reliable charts on the DST-10? This thread has done little to give me confidence in any sub. [:S]
  14. Calling my regional Danley sales for a drop ship price. This thing is big. 3000 watts rms. Holy ghost!
  15. Great site. Did you just run across this, or do you have first hand experience with his designs?
  16. Thank you for your feedback. I was ready to get what you got, but I wanted to know about this folded horn technology first. I may still, or I may go with larger Danley's since I am pressurizing about 70K cu ft. A lot of that would depend on what the Danley engineers say if and when I make a call to them.
  17. OK, I know I need some bass to augment the six La Scalas I am using in the shop. I am now thinking a folded horn design is the best. What would Paul Klipsch have used? In looking at the specs on the tapped horn, vs the folded horn, vs ported, I am completely confused. Look at the Cerwin Vega TS-42 as an exampe. It is 27-215Hz, 108db sens and 144 dB max SPL. I can buy it for $1500 new. I can buy a pair of 18's for $1200, and they together have similar output. I can get a pair of Yamaha SW 218's for under $1300, and they each have the following specs: 30Hz -2KHz, 98dB sens, and max SPL of 132 dB each. Lastly there is the Danley DTS-10 which would be $2700 delivered for a pair in kit form. The specs for them is 15-70Hz, 100dB sens, and max spl 127 dB. I was just gonna get the DTS, but I am now second guessing that. I think perhaps the folded horn may fit the shop environment better. Thoughts?
  18. Quick update. I now have 3 pairs of La Scalas. I am using two for the center channel, and the other 4 for the L/R and Rears. Still using the Integra receiver, and the Paradigm Sub. BOY DOES THIS SHOP SOUND DIFFERENT!!!!!! The guy I bought the Integra/Paradigm system from came over and looked at me and asked if it was all running on the Integra receiver. When I said yeh, he looked at me and said "Holy Shit!" Still no sub purchased, but the Danley DST-10 is still in the forefront of my mind. I think I will indeed need two of them. As stated, I'm going to let the Danley engineers help me decide. As for the main tuner/amp, I may just stay pure Marantz. I guess that is the AV 7005, and the MM 7055.
  19. So it was made by a German in Arkansas? Tell me it aint so!!! I always just assumed it was German. What a blow!!!
  20. The statistics on Klipsch about the RF-52 and the F-3 put them as close in frequency response and efficiency. The thing I can't get past is the fact that his speakers weigh twice yours. His also has a front port, and much more woofer area which you'd think would sound different. I'm not an acoustical engineer, but I would ask him if you could borrow his speakers and see what they sound like in your room. His weight 60 lbs each, so dont hurt your back! One other thing. I have an Integra receiver much like what you have in your pioneer. I set my LFE at 110 in the receiver. I set the LPF on the sub itself at around 85. Are you using 50 on the receiver? Did I understand you wrong? It should be higher than that unless your fronts are Cornwalls or something insane... What sets Klipsch apart is engineering. Its made in Germany, and you know the Germans make good stuff! Lastly, did you use the MCACC microphone when you set up the receiver? Look on page 7 of your manual. It will set levels and automatically do your EQ based on the room and speakers you have.
  21. I wonder if game coders and artists/modelers would be a good resource. I have seen a lot of 3d modeling in architecture and engineering, but the gamers seem to be way ahead with realism. The stuff you are talking about sounds like a misture of CAD and Gary's Mod. Good luck!
  22. Steinway piano makes the rims of their piano's from layered hard rock maple. I have also heard most piano's are basically maple with veneer. Would maple be the best material domestically?
  23. Dimensioning is something CAD programs are good at. Modeling programs are also adept at this. Free?? hmmmmmm Try shareware.com and search for modeling or CAD and free. Photoshop and the like can rescale easy enough, what you get is the dimension of the sprite you are working with. Perhaps this is what you are looking for. Here are some CAD's: http://download.cnet.com/windows/cad-software/?tag=metaData;specsBox Some modeling: http://download.cnet.com/windows/3d-modeling-software/?tag=metaData;specsBox May I ask the application?
